Minor nitpick but the aspect ratios are actually 2:35, 2:39 or 2:40 for anamorphic widescreen (they are actually all the same, 2:40, but early on they were erronously thought to be 2:35 and this is still used) and the north american academy standard is 1:85. Not 2:33 and 1:88.

I was taught differently in my film production class.

EDIT... but according to Wikipedia I'm wrong, so never mind.

Not that that is going to stop you from dreaming… Only in this case, Gaffer is actually a guy.

Ooh, gosh, it's been so long that I don't remember anymore. You could try the official site (wherever it is) or look for some old articles on bttf.com

Um, we're talking about Back to the Future, Tiptup, not Star Wars. All of Star Wars was filmed in a 2.33:1 ratio, so the fullscreen version is definitely cropped, and you're missing out on a large portion of the picture in that case.

Oh, sorry. I could have saved myself some time there.

Last time I brought this up here, someone proposed that he could have been referring to 2.33:1 as wide rather than 1.88:1 (which is the ratio the widescreen version of it is in), which could be a possibility.
That was me, and I'm pretty certain it was the case because I've heard many filmmakers refer to 2.35:1 as wide and 1.85: as otherwise. In Bob Gale's DVD commentary in reference to the aspect ratio, he mentions that 1.78:1 had been chosen as the standard TV ratio at the time (something that did not really happen until widescreen sets popped up) and that's why they shot it in 1.85.
