Gloomy Sunday - the notorious 'Hungarian Suicide Song' - was written in 1933. Its melody and original lyrics were the creation of Rezsô Seress, a self-taught pianist and composer born in Hungary in 1899.

The crushing hopelessness and bitter despair which characterised the two stanza penned by Seress were superseded by the more mournful, melancholic verses of Hungarian poet László Jávor.

When the song came to public attention it quickly earned its reputation as a 'suicide song'. Reports from Hungary alleged individuals had taken their lives after listening to the haunting melody, or that the lyrics had been left with their last letters.

The lyricists Sam M. Lewis and Desmond Carter each penned an English translatation of the song. It was Lewis's version, first recorded by Hal Kemp and his Orchestra, with Bob Allen on vocals (1936), that was to become the most widely covered.

The popularity of Gloomy Sunday increased greatly through its interpretation by Billie Holiday (1941). In an attempt to alleviate the pessemistic tone a third stanza was added to this version, giving the song a dreamy twist, yet still the suicide reputation remained. Gloomy Sunday was banned from the playlists of major radio broadcasters around the world. The B.B.C. deemed it too depressing for the airwaves.

Despite all such bans, Gloomy Sunday continued to be recorded and sold.

People continued to buy the recordings; some committed suicide.

Rezsô Seress jumped to his death from his flat in 1968.

Ah, the famous suicide song... I know what song that is, but I don't remember the version that is on Schindlers List. I'll rent the DVD this week (I want to see it again, it has been a while), and I'll listen to the song and I'll try to figure it out what it is.

Besides, you could look at the soundtrack information link on IMDB.

“Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country.” — Nazi Reich Marshal Hermann Goering

The Kronos Quartet version sounds the most like it out of all the versions i now have of the song but i have compared it with the movie and it seems to be a bit slower than the version in the movie...
thx so much for that info though...
the more versions i have the better..

i figured it has to be out there if they used it in the movie....
and i've checked the imdb... not on the soundtrack

I, too, need help finding a song from a soundtrack. However, I do know the song and band name. I just can't find it on pay music services and my only broadband connection is at work which has blocked out access to all gnutella clients. Anyone willing to find this on Limewire or the like in MP3 format, I would be greatly appreciative.

"Strange Disease" by Prozzak from the 40 Days and 40 Nights soundtrack. This is one of my guilty pleasure songs (it was used in the end credits of the film).

I have an e-mail inbox that is big enough to receive an MP3 file. [email address removed]

If you do send it, please put a note here in this thread so nobody else goes searching as well.

Let me know.

Thanks in advance.

Have you heard any other stuff by Prozzak, Bossk? This was a one-off techno project by 2 members of the Canadian jazz-funk outfit The Philosopher Kings, and the whole CD is good trashy fun. Extremely tongue-in-cheek.

Damn! It didn't come through. I have 100 MB of storage, but, now I find out, they won't let me get messages over a couple MB each. Can I give you one more address to try? kapgar [at] aurora [dot] edu. It's my work address. It may hit a wall initially, but I should be able to approve it through our junk mail filter service. Otherwise, I guess I'm searching for the CD.

Gundark, is this particular song on any one of their CDs? May have to search for it if it's there. I don't want to buy the 40d/40n soundtrack since that's the only song I like, but if their studio releases are more of the same, it may be worthwhile.

Bossk, do you have Yahoo! or MSN Messenger? If we can coordinate schedules I can send the mp3s to you that way. Failing that, Strange Disease is on the album Hot Show, and I can burn and mail you a copy if you'd like.

Luke, the file came through on my Yahoo account. Dunno why it took so long, but it came through, it works, and that is most definitely the song. Excellent, Smithers!

THANK YOU! I am one happy camper right now!

Gundark, I may still take you up on that offer sometime for other Prozzak songs. I have to download Yahoo Messenger.
