JediTray's VINYL preservation project (CANCELLED) — Page 4

Nope, unfortunately not.  The ROTJ LP suffered from the new incoming Compact Disc craze, so, like many other scores of the time, was relegated to a single LP instead of the 2-record sets we got from the other films.  There's only so much real estate on a record, so roughly an hour is all we got in the format.  I think the LP is a little heavy on Ewok themes, and the non-movie version of Lapti Nek was a waste of space as well.  The ROTJ sessions offered much better choices for the LP in my opinion, but whattaya gonna do.  It's all in the can, as they say.

Ah, ok. I suppose it's like the sounds of music sheets being turned during quiet moments you can sometimes hear on soundtracks :)

(Sorry for double post)...

It's not as simple. Cause if you have to take into consideration the mixing, you have to consider the recordings too

... And Eric Tomlinson who recorded the OT musics used to make two recordings the same time: a 8-track (6 tracks of music) live recording + a 24-track recording. The first one was to catch the whole ambiance of the orchestra (front/below/left/right), while the 2nd one was to have more or less isolated the different sections of the orchestra.

It seems however that the 24-track was almost always what was chosen for the albums, when it seems the film received mostly the 8-track live takes wich contains the synchro tone for pictures. Now you can imagine all the different versions we could make of a SW score ! The album mixings had the reputation already to have some narrow stereo (I don't remember the reason but it was related to the necessity to have a center channel that was not obvious to manage...).

Is the music where the Falcon and other rebels fly into the Death Star tunnel sequence on this LP? That's one of my favorite parts of the movie.

Well, I already quoted that elsewhere, but if you're talking about the "Superstructure Chase" cue as I think, here it is again:

Eric Tomlinson said:

"I went down to talk to John williams when he was conducting (...) He couldn't hear a damn thing in there".

"I took it back to Abbey Road and I spent days trying to make it sound like Abbey Road and I just couldn't. We gave up in the end and although it sounded OK in the studio at Olympic, it didn't match up with the preceding or the following cue. They almost dropped it but it was too important to drop".

Okay, all of my ROTJ stuff is ready for download.  The LP is available by itself, while the Story of, Lapti Nek 12", and RSO/Polydor CD are bundled together.

Feedback and comments are welcome.

Here is a sample of "Yoda's Theme" from the LP:

The sample sounds great; I love how clear everything you've put up has been, compared to other vinyl transfers I've heard.

Just one thought on levels, though... the sample seems overly loud between about 1:00 and 1:15, especially in the flutes, and there's a bit of crackling there as well.  The levels don't "look" too hot, but they sure sound it, right there.

Overall, though... this is sounding like another good one.  Thanks!

Thanks for the input.  :)

I thought it came in a little hot too.  Fixing....

Okay, here's the new sample of "Yoda's Theme":

Please keep in mind that this is a preservation, not a restoration.  Even with all the measures I am taking, there are going to be imperfections.  The main focus of this project is to celebrate the dynamics and sound, as well as the nuances, of the vinyl recordings.

Imperfections (background noise, cracklings etc...) are part of the pleasure, and are not bothering at all if they are managed the way you seem now able to do...

And 'imo', your transfer sounds quite as expected from the LP's. "Yoda's Theme" is perhaps a quiet track by nature, but is also paradoxally one of the most powerful track (too much!) of the album (I calmed down the lows a bunch when I worked on this mix...). Anyway, your sample has now nothing more to do next to your first try. ;)

I will chime in. I listened to jedi and sounded to me too quiet like volume limiting was used, and also too clean the removal of the pops and clicks removed the detail.

I would like it if you had a raw version, but it is your project so i don't want to be a jerk or an asshole, you just asked my opinion.  And i am probably unfairly comparing to the 7fn transfers, but 20th century mark did not have expensive equipment like you bought and his sounded better too.

The guy selling this equipment has gotten a lot of great reviews so i am surprised it is the same company. Perhaps the clean up software is the problem.

Still in the future i will be wary to purchase the equipment that is sold on that site.

I am also very surprised he does not have a lossless soltion for the cleaning process . Working only in 16 bit sucks no 24 bit is lame.  Most older computers can only do 16 bit.  I guess it depends on how much you think you can capture from an LP. I guess 16 bit is okay if you are going straight to CD.

But if you want to make a lossless DVD-audio disc it is kind of not the best, imho.

Ouch.  Well, I guess there's no reason to continue this then.  I better get this stuff packed up for a refund before the guarantee runs out.

CANCELLED.

Why i only said it sounded too clean because of the declicker.  I never heard the raw version.

If you are opting for digital clean, then you got what you wanted.

If you want warmer sound you capture and offer them raw warts and all.

Don't cancel your project because of one constructive criticism.  It did not sound that bad really it sounded good for an LP rip.  I just like the raw captures myself since i am a purist.  You already have one person chiming in saying they like it better because of the cleanup.

When 20thCentury Mark original posted his raw captures i made a cleaned version up for myself using goldwave.  What i resulted in sounded much like yours, only worse actually because you have a professional mixer.

By the way i only listened to the single jedi LP.  Don't cancel your whole project over that.  I have not listened to empire strikes back, story of rotj, lapti nek, etc.

Is there a way to use clean up in the software with a lighter touch?

How about just remove the volume limiting you applied i bet that even pop and click free jedi would sound better.

I think the original CD release was similar actually you had to crank it up, but better than a loss in dynamic range.  Which was pretty good on your capture the highs seamed to be clipped back a bit though, i did not analyze with software only with my ears so i might be off.

I went to the DAK website and apparently the clean up software is adjustable or you can use the automatic method.

Dude if it means anything to you your LP transfer sounded better than the 1997 Jedi release.

I could still hear the horns and stuff in the music.

Also perfect for the ipod.

How come you settled on wav instead of FLAC ? quality concerns or because you don't need to uncompress wav, some players don't play it?

Hahaha ! Such a comment would really hurt me !. How can any transfer sound worst or even as bad as this shit ?!! lol ! The Ipod purpose is not more grateful I guess.

I totally understand SkyJedi for a raw capture though, and that's why I said the noises and cracklings aren't bothering "imperfections". Also, I can't be that picky in my feedbacks cause I'd need to burn CD's to really witness the quality.

But let's be fair, the dynamic range of the Jedi LP through straight comparison with the CD rip sounded superior to me. I haven't compared with 20th Century mark capture yet, nor with 7FN's transfers that are not on my hard drive (it avoids to lose stuff ;) ... ).

JediTray, this is why some of us gave you crap in your other thread.  You can't just keep changing your mind over and over.  It's frustrating for those who are interested in the project.

Agreed as a quality transfer of this material could help with numerous projects and be a source of audio entertainment for all who have been excited.

Numark USB turntable

In my own opinion, this is the main problem.

These USB turntables are designed for convenience and speed, not for quality.  Maybe sending your vinyl out to someone here who has a more quality-minded set up would return more pleasing results?

I would never recommend a USB turntable to anyone wanting to enjoy their vinyl on CD, ever.

I hope this continues forward....I know these could sound awesome and I'd bet there is someone waiting to be asked or offer a hand to help make it available.

Cheers!!!!

JT, you don't know how much "negative" feedbacks could have helped me for the ESB "Audiophile Edition". Besides, one of the most helpful feedback that really made me go forward was when I released the "Optimum Edition(s)", when Vaderios told me by PM: "That' s a nice patchwork..." or something like this. It is thanks to such cristicism I improved this score until you don't have the feeling anymore to listen to a patchwork. Just saying... ;)

Um, if you would read the whole post, I stated that the Numark was a joke and I wasn't using one.

As for the project, it is dead.  The equipment has been dropped off at UPS, the files deleted, and programs uninstalled.  I had a feeling deep down that I wasn't 100% happy with it, and SJ's post just sealed the deal.  Maybe I was expecting too much out of it, but it's done.

I'll leave these sorts of things to the professionals from now on.

Apologies to anyone that may have been following this.  This is my last post in this thread.
