JediTray's VINYL preservation project (CANCELLED)

So. Freaking. Excited!

I was just asking about the vinyl rips of the original soundtrack releases (Return Of The Jedi in particular) a couple days ago on the ABC and 7FN OT Soundtracks "Salvage" thread, but no one had mentioned having them.

So I absolutely WILL be keepin an eye on this thread!  And you can bet I'll help seed.

I just love vinyl rips.  I've been a lurker/leecher over at avaxhome.ws for a while, and have learned to love the warmth a good LP rip provides.  I've been trying to get an account there, mainly so I could beg the two people whose rips I most often download (aksman and Dr. Robert), if they would "pretty please" rip the Star Wars Trilogy soundtracks, but sign-ups are closed.  :-(  It's really interesting reading some of the comments regarding noise reduction and click and pop removal.  Dr. Robert in particular seems to do an excellent job of this.

Anyway, I'm just thrilled (still!  again!) that you're doing these, and as much as I'd like to say "hurry up" and get them done (especially RoTJ), I almost want you to do everything BUT the original trilogy first, so by the time you get to them, you have your process down.

Yes, I'm greedy like that.

Anyway, if you decide to try and spread these in a way other than torrent, let me know.  I just uploaded the ABC Salvage editions and that seemed to go well.  I'd be happy to help share your stuff as well.

Thanks!

Eric

After doing some research, I found out more about my Star Wars Radio Spots record.  The one I own is indeed the FIRST set of 5 Radio Spots from 1977.  StarWars.com has them in mp3 format, but I will still be making mine in FLAC format with a scan of the record.  They included a bonus Burger Chef spot on theirs, so I will be including it with mine, as well as a set of 1978 re-release spots I found there.

I have the story of star wars on reel to reel, and the soundtrack on reel to reel in a boxed set.  Never had them transferred.  Nice that someone will finally do a transfer of those.

Yep.  My source is the gold foil labeled set as well.  I also have the standard release of the soundtrack on reel.  I doubt there are any quality or mastering differences, but I may run a comparison when I get the equipment all hooked up.

DO you know if anyone has ever captured the japan pressed LP's they are supposed to be of better quality.  I don't currently have them myself but have been looking forward to finding copies in good condition and in a rather lower price than what they usually go for.  Ebay is highway robbery, and to be used only as a last resort.

I can personally tell you that there is NO discernible difference in quality or mastering in the Japanese vinyl releases, at least not to me.  I heard those same claims, did some research, and actually listened to American RSO versus Japanese Polydor.  I physically watched selected tracks from them with a spectrum analyzer program, and compared the dB levels with Sony ACID Pro.  Other than for collectibility, there was no difference in sound quality to warrant paying a ransom for them.

What does your vinyl rig consist of?

I will be using a Numark USB turntable with ceramic cartridge....

I'm kidding.  Those things are trash, LOL.

I'll be getting into more specifics after the project is done, and maybe provide some pics, but most of this new rig consists of equipment and software by DAK Industries.

The rest of the equipment arrives on the 10th, so the vinyl portion of the project is starting soon.  Car repairs have set back the reel to reel portion, however.

The vinyl project starts tomorrow.  More news soon.

I'm loving the "Lapti Nek" remixes!  I could really only "hear" the vinyl surface noise at the very beginning (maybe the first 12-13 seconds) of Side A, and the very end of Side B.

Fantastic job!

I'm wondering... was this a case of your record being super pristine, or did you declick/denoise/decrackle software work that well?  Just curious.  I just know that after hearing that, I'm really looking forward to your soundtrack LP rips.  Any thoughts on how they compare to the "Lapti Nek" single as far as pops and clicks go?

Regardless, I'm loving this thread.  :-)

I did find a couple covers for the single as well.  Not sure if you scanned your copy, or if you grabbed something off the Internet, but I found front and back covers (although the front cover is different), and cleaned them up a bit.  Hope they're useful for somebody.  (Right-click to save to your hard drive for the full-size images.)

Thanks for the feedback and the additional cover art.  In some cases, I have more than one copy of the material so I choose the best.  In the case of Lapti Nek, I had to do my best with one copy.  I take great pride in my records, but sometimes you just have no control over getting things that have been used.  I'm currently working on TESB and the low-key cues are definitely a challenge.

I'll comment on my methods after the project is finished.

I thought - for RS anyway - that if you didn't have a paid account they would delete your upload after a certain amount of time?

It's a certain amount of time after the last download (60 days currently?).  I believe that is true for MU also.  And, I believe it's even true for premium accounts if you've uploaded more than a certain amount (25 GB?).

Even if the release were only up for a short amount if time, it would give people with premium acccounts or access to newsgroups the chance to download and re-upload it to ensure its future availability.

TESB is coming along nicely, and should be done within a day.

The Empire Strikes Back is now available.

Wow, what a journey this one became.  I hope you folks enjoy it.  I really had to work some magic in a couple spots.  The last track, "Finale", offered the largest challenge.  As I was listening, I heard what I thought was a scuff on the record.  So, I broke out the TESB CD to see if I could work in a patch.  As it turns out, the glitch was on the CD as well and I realized it was actually the source material itself that had the flaw.  So, I dug into my files and CD collection and found a fix.  It only happens for a fraction of a second, but after all the work I put in on the other tracks, I just had to fix it.  I fixed it on the vinyl rip ONLY and left the RSO/Polydor CD as is.

So, there you have it.  :)

This contains the full LP soundtrack, as well as the CD.

If interested, PM me.

Sorry folks, I have scrapped TESB and will come back to it later.

Don't be sorry. You know, you won't be the first one to make many versions of your preservations... People are quite perfectionists here and their work always evolute. I've understood you want to give the best yourself. ;)
