"Jaws" - Laserdisc/TV/Documentary Preservation (* unfinished project *)

In the 80’s, ABC aired Jaws in it’s uncut form for a Sunday Night Movie event. For people who had seen the movie for the first time, they didn’t notice the difference in the films run time due to the addition of the deleted scenes. When Jaws fans saw the airing, they were shocked to see these scenes as they had never been shown anywhere before.

In 1995, Universal released the “Signature Edition” Jaws laserdisc. On the laserdisc, it was presented in its original 2.35:1 aspect ratio and contained the original mono track. Along with the feature film, loads of bonus extras were included including: The Making of “Jaws”, Deleted Scenes, Outtakes, and more, all presented in the original 2.35:1 aspect ratio. However, 4 trailers were shown on the laserdisc, but when released on DVD, only 3 were featured.

For the first time, see Jaws in it’s uncut format in 2.35:1 widescreen along with the original ABC airing, never before seen since its airing in the 80’s. With bonus features like, The Shark is Still Working & New England Our Way, this 4 disc set is the ultimate Jaws DVD collection!

DELETED SCENES:

Quint at the Music Shop

Quint arriving at the Town Hall

Hooper’s Phone Sexcapades

Extended Fishermen Sequence

SOURCES USED:

Jaws SIGNATURE EDITION Laserdisc (Video)

Jaws ABC Sunday Night Airing (Video)

The Shark is Still Working (Video)

New England Our Way (Video)

ESTIMATED COMPLETION DATE: Late September 2012

There is no difference between the documentary on the laserdisc and the one on the DVD/Blu-ray.

Which version of The Shark Is Still Working are you releasing? The same one on the Blu? Or the 3 hour version?

You should check out the discs I've already released on Jaws. I believe I did two or three.

This forum is mostly for items that are NOT currently available or for fan-edits.

Aside from the ABC airing, it doesn't seem like yours includes anything that's not currently available on the blu-ray set.

I misspoke. I'm not using the Laserdisc documentary on my set, as it's not missing anything except a few title cards for each segment. I actually meant the NEW ENGLAND OUR WAY, documentary. It's paired along with 5 Jaws trailers and other bonus features.

The Shark is Still Working doc is the 2 hour and 30 minutes version, much better than the 3-hour version as it flows better.

This is a fan-edit as well since I'm using the Laserdisc to combine both deleted scenes and the full film together so they match up better than quality wise than the DVDs.

Your Jaws discs are the inspiration behind this one as I really enjoyed those documentaries you uploaded since I had never seen them. I'm providing these rare edits and documentaries for the fans to follow how you did them.

Greetings everyone!

I just stumbled upon this post after watching a making of ET documentary ripped from the laserdisc via youtube, and I was reminded of reading that the laserdisc of Jaws contains some exclusive materials that have yet to be included on the DVD/Blue-Ray releases, this project appears to be the answer to my prayers as I’d love to finally see what I’ve been missing out on…plus who could resist more Jaws!

Any status updates?

If you’re ever planning on doing another edition/still currently working on this project I have some things you might be interested in including (then again, you might not)

** TNT 1995 Airing of Jaws (Uncut and unsensored, and featuring interviews with some cast/crew as well as experts and shark attack survivors)

** ABC 2000 Airing of Jaws (Basically identical to the '80s ABC airing, but featuring interviews with Spielberg, the much-hated altered audio track, and a few deleted scenes left out)

** Jaws E! True Hollywood Story

I do have an AMC airing of Jaws from 2003, no commercials but VHS sourced if anyone is interested in me sharing that. I’m also interested if anyone has considered doing a complete edit of the 1995 doc combining parts from all edits including the 2 hour cut on the LD/'05 DVD/BD, 10 minute cut from '95 VHS, and 1 hour cut from '00 DVD. All have certain parts not in the other. It’d be nice to cut it in a similar fashion as the one hour cut with music and photographs since the 2 hour version is cut together rather boringly.

I only noticed that the shortened version of the documentary included a never-before-seen raw outtake of the 4th of July beach panic scene. What other differences are there besides the use of production stills?I heard that there was an extended version of JAWS screened in 2000 to celebrate the 25th anniversary,it included deleted scenes but not as many as the old ABC TV edit from the late 70’s/early 80’s,is this true?

The documentary first. I have to watch the one hour version again but off hand I remember a bit where Richard Zanuck was speaking of the casting process. He said something like ‘Our philosophy was the star was the shark. We have our star so we don’t need big names. Just get good actors’. This isn’t in the two hour cut. Also the 10 minute cut is the only cut with Spielberg’s full closing line ‘Jaws was a fun movie to watch but not a fun movie to make. It was an amazing experience for me under the worst conditions, and sometimes very sweet conditions, but most of the time under the worst conditions’.

I’m not sure about the ABC edit but from what you mentioned it sounds similar to the AMC version I taped. It has a few deleted scenes but lacks a few that are in the old ABC edit notably the extended scene in the Brody kitchen and Hooper and Brody talking under the jetty before cutting open the Tiger shark. And yes it does have the horrible sound EX from the surround mix, not the original mono.

Thanks! I remember my old Australian VHS 25th anniversary fullscreen copy of JAWS from 2000,also had a cut-down version of the 1995 laserdisc documentary-now at 60 minutes. At the start it featured a rather well edited montage from the film which ended on a close-up of Quint’s face screaming as the shark bites down on his legs. This new opening for the doc was more dynamic than the original flat presentation on laserdisc.I forgot to transfer this 60 minute version to DVD-R before binning the tape. The version on the 25th anniversary R4 DVD was shortened by a further 10 minutes-and didn’t include the montage.
If you put together an extended version of the 1995 doc are you going to use the original laserdisc title cards for each chapter-which were later removed for the DVD and Blu-Ray ‘full-length versions’?

I dont actually have the LD so the best I could do is the DVD version. Odd that your 25th Anniversary DVD features a cut version of the one hour cut. The doc on the US 25th Anniversary DVD was identical to the cut on the US 25th Anniversary VHS and had the montage. However the 2012 US DVD did feature a slightly edited version of the one hour doc which lacked the montage.

Are you sure about the montage being on the 25th anniversary R1 DVD of JAWS? I just checked my fullscreen R1 DVD 25th anniversary edition from 2000-it’s not included.Which is a shame.I assume the bonus content for both widescreen and fullscreen 2000 R1 DVD editions are the same?

I did not have the FS edition of the 25th Anniversary DVD but the disc I had I definitely recall having the montage.
