Jason Wingreen, disintegrated from history by Lucasfilm, for their new doc on Boba Fett

Did anyone see the new “Under The Helmet: The Legacy of Boba Fett” short documentary recently released on Disney+?

 
This was billed as:

“Explore the history of the legendary bounty hunter in Under the Helmet: The Legacy of Boba Fett, an Original Documentary Special now streaming on @DisneyPlus.”
 

Well, they did the dirty on Jason Wingreen in this documentary.

There is not a single mention of him at all in it.

The doc starts with Temuera Morrison as the voice of Boba in the Original Trilogy, and ends with Temuera Morrison as being the voice of Boba.

It was like Jason Wingreen’s role in Empire Strikes Back, his distinct and awe inspiring voice as Boba, never happened.

Everyone else seems to be in the documentary, gets a mention, some screen time, a nod, some archive footage.

There is even a great emotional segment in the “Under The Helmet” with archive footage of Jeremy Bulloch (RIP). Plus mentions of Duwayne Dunham in the Boba suit testing it out, and later on at the Marin County Fair. Joe Johnston, Lucas himself also appear in it, as do Daniel Logan, Temuera, Kathleen Kennedy, Dave Filoni, Ben Burtt and Steve Sansweet.

I found the documentary a fine enjoyable watch (other than completely ignoring Wingreen’s role as the voice of Fett).
 

But the decision to omit Jason Wingreen from this doc, without one single mention, is a poor and erroneous attempt at re-writing history from Lucasfilm, and also the actor’s contribution to the Original Trilogy.

 

For anyone who does not know of Jason Wingreen voice work in Empire Strikes Back, here is a video of his lines as Boba Fett:

No worries at all, mate - and thinking about it… this should have its own thread.

(and feel free to re-post any of those videos up in here too - if you so wish, of course. It may help younger / newer fans realise Jason Wingreen’s impactful contribution in the role of Boba, to say nothing of that distinct, chilling, and defined original voice.)

 

As said in amongst the other videos:-

‘Hopefully they’ll amend the documentary - or rectify the omission of Jason Wingreen in the credits… though I doubt it.’

Lucasfilm have seemingly become quite adept at re-writing the history of the Original Trilogy, and early Star Wars overall…

Maybe they aren’t allowed to mention him? I always thought the idea when Lucas sold everything, he had some sort of contractual agreement regarding the unaltered theatrical versions, to not be very credible. But over the years I’ve started to think it must be more than just them wanting to appease Lucas and honor his wishes. Maybe they can legally mention the actors who are actually in the armor, but not the voice actor who was entirely removed and replaced with Temuera Morrison?

If he’s uncredited in the first place they can probably erase anything. It’s not on brand to say that originally it wasn’t Morrison.

No, they didn’t. But the focus was on Boba himself, and very little on the ship.
I think there were more shots of the ship from The Mandalorian than there were from the other films and animated series.

I think an actor’s work being erased, overlooked and forgotten about by an official documentary is a little more important than a Lego set being titled ‘Boba Fett’s Starship’, yes.

Especially since that’s the naming process for all Star Wars Lego sets. I don’t remember you being up in arms when the Havoc Marauder got “renamed” as the Bad Batch Attack Shuttle, for example.

The controversy generated around Slave 1 all came from when the Lego set released and it was just called ‘Boba Fett’s starship’. The story was that Disney were censoring the word ‘slave’ due to its sensitive nature, but it was all completely false. Nothing outside of the world of Lego sets changed. That’s what I know about it anyway.

Yes. And my previous respond still stands the same even after your next post. I also couldn’t care less what some guy gets annoyed by.

Mostly this topic seemed to be about the new doc that I haven’t seen and what it did/did not include despite its aggressively clickbait-y title. Not sure what is expected from this topic then, people just crying about the fact what has happened? Yes, it’s sad and probably everyone agrees, but not surprising since he hasn’t been in the official version for 17 years. Anyways, the documentary has been made and it’s out, so that’s that. But yeah, I got the answer to my question, that Slave I didn’t get mentioned either in a full documentary about Boba Fett which didn’t surprise me hence the question. Thanks to Johann for answering so I didn’t have to start a new topic for one yes/no question.

Sorry, your point holds no water. Duwayne Dunham has not tested the Boba suit since the 1970’s, but he got a mention and interview in this documentary. Nearly everyone from the 1970’s and 1980’s connected to Boba did.

But not Jason Wingreen, the distinct voice of Boba Fett, for 24 years. That is surprising in an official “legacy documentary” on the history of Boba Fett.

I thought this forum is for also about talking about the changes to the Original Trilogy, and what changes are being made to the history of Star Wars in official releases, like this documentary? I made the thread because I thought it was something that is interesting to us on here. I am mistaken, and will not make a thread again.

Also, nobody is “crying” in here.

You’re not mistaken - I’m sure I can speak for most others who have commented here in saying I was glad to see this being highlighted and interested to discuss it (even if there isn’t much to discuss). For me personally, it drew my attention to Wingreen’s exclusion from the doc. At the time I’d noticed they used Temuera’s dubbed version with the usual mild exasperation, but it didn’t occur to me that Wingreen was the only one to contribute to the portrayal of Boba who wasn’t honoured by Lucasfilm in this short. I don’t think I’d have noticed it otherwise. Much as I’m happy to see Tem Morrison playing Boba in live action now, I love Jason Wingreen’s original voice work and this does sadden me. I’ve pointed it out to a few others outside the forum now as well.

I’d hate for this experience to put you off making any other threads in the future. I’ll always be interested in reading them

For whatever reason, be it legally contracted or some other choice, it seems they simply are mot going to acknowledge anything from the originals that was removed in the newer versions.
