James Bond LD/VHS/DVD-to-UHD Audio Syncs

After getting the UHD release of the Sean Connery Bond films last year, I was disappointed with the original mono audio tracks for each. All sounded a little muffled with generations of noise reduction. I acquired copies of the best* available audio tracks, and resynced them to UHD, and wanted to share:

(*According to the blah-ray blog)

  • Dr. No - (Criterion Laserdisc CC1292L) - also includes sync of commentary
  • From Russia With Love - (MGM Laserdisc ML102713) - also includes Criterion commentary
  • Goldfinger - (MGM Laserdisc ML101403) - also includes Criterion commentary
  • Thunderball - (1984 CBS/Fox Hi-Fi VHS) (Note this is the “Version A” original mono track)
  • You Only Live Twice - (2000 Special Edition DVD)
  • Diamonds Are Forever - (MGM Laserdisc ML101741)

Each track I received was initially synced to the earlier Blu-ray or Web-DL. I found a ton of drift, and even the UHD mono and Atmos tracks didn’t sync with each other, so I used each track as a guide to create a best-of sync. Audio pops and audio dropouts from disc changes were reduced as much as possible.

Each main track is encoded in 16-bit PCM 1.0 in its original sample rate of 44.1kHz, except YOLT which is 48kHz from the DVD. The commentaries are encoded in 48kHz AC3.

Each track syncs to the UHD version of the film without adjustment. The UHD release uses the new CGI Amazon version of the MGM opening. These audio tracks use the old studio logo audio with just the lion roar (synced to the CGI lion).

I hope you enjoy them. I’m particularly pleased with From Russia With Love. The UHD audio sounds muffled and processed and the Laserdisc sounds deep and clear.

I was intending to make re-syncs of every Bond film through Licence to Kill once those released on UHD, but made re-syncs of a few anyway, also available:

  • On Her Majesty’s Secret Service - (MGM Laserdisc ML101788) - re-synced to Blu-ray, also syncs with 4K WEB-DL version with +3920ms delay
  • The Spy Who Loved Me - (Laserdisc Dolby Stereo, I think ML101743) - re-synced to Blu-ray
  • The Living Daylights - (Laserdisc Dolby Stereo, I think ML102530) - re-synced to Blu-ray
