Reel 1 will be ready to start rendering out intermediate PNG outs sometime this week! (overnight while tweaking up AOTC to get ready during the day)
Got to go over reel 1 the last few days (while waiting for split reel type that can handle the cores used on AOTC to arrive, had to order one off ebay as ones I got turned out to not work with cores on AOTC). Did final tuning from general calibration to scan specific calibration. Looking very good. The tweaked base calibration for this scan looks to work super well for pretty much the entire first half of reel 1. Some of the greens are so weird during the helicopter landing that I’ll need to custom tweak for those (actually already did this, made a few custom calibrations for a few sequences there as needed). And then a few bits of the soil and rocks when the lawyer first arrives on the island and walks around don’t come out red enough, eventually I’ll go back and tweak a couple of those scenes up by hand with masking and so on at some point in the future. Everything else is looking really, really good though. Staring back and forth between the actual 35mm print and calibrated scan image for corresponding frame it really looks super, super same, barely any difference looking back and forth between the two and I compared frames from dozens of different scenes across the entire reel.
I’m gonna put out the theatrical 1.81:1 framing one first. Once I get the first 10 minutes or so done, I’ll render out those PNGs to a video file before waiting for the whole reel. It’ll be full release form with audio and all (Dolby analog and Cinema DTS). One day I may try to find out what trailers often played before it and see if I can track them down, scan, process and splice then in front. For now it’s just the basic reel 1. So it will start with the original DTS snipe (included on reel 1 of the print itself) and then go straight into the film.
