Is there anything you do like about The Prequels...

I’m not a fan of the prequels; however, is there anything, anything at all, about the prequels that you like? One of the only things I enjoy from the PT movies is the John Williams score. The man is a genius, in my opinion, no matter how bad a movie is where his score is playing in the background.

I was just thinking the same thing today as I was watching the Knights Of The Old Republic fan film. The prequel score is really beautiful in parts. I LOVE Anakin's theme. Too bad the events playing out on the screen didn't match the majesty of Williams' score.

Fart jokes. I love me some fart jokes, and in that department the PT was nonstop action.

The lightsaber battle at the end of ep.1, and in particular the juxtaposition of the choral score, is a work of artistic genius and utterly thrilling. The rest of the PT is dog doo-doo, but that scene brought me back to the theater twice.

I didn't even know that the PT sucked for each installment until I realized that people hated it. Then I wondered why did people hate it so much? The answer-everything.

I have to admit, I did enjoy the Star Wars: Clone Wars cartoons... Without the PT they probably would have never been made...

I like the Prequels, and I make no apologies for it.

The time surrounding them was amazing, especially for Star Wars fans. The anticipation of seeing a new Star Wars movie overshadowed anything negative about them.

Anyone that went to a midnight showing of any of the 3 can tell you that the electricity in the air was intoxicating, and the buzz coming out of the theatre having just seen a new Star Wars movie was amazing.

Let me remind the Prequel haters of something - in the theatre, when people saw each Episode the first time, there were cheers and claps and laughs in the right spots.

I like them myself, maybe there are things which maybe I would like to have seen done differently but whats done is done, and I find them fun and entertaining and thats the main thing to me when it comes to these films.

I agree with them too. I can go on all day about the deficiencies in the prequels, but I'll still watch them, and I'll still enjoy them, considerable flaws and all. Do I think they're on the same level as their predecessors? No, and I realized that the first time I saw the end credits roll on The Phantom Menace when I was 13. But I saw all three of them in theatres, and they were fun nonetheless... although it was especially fun to sit in the theatre and make fun of Revenge of the Sith the second time I went to see it. I have to say that that one had parts that were so bad that even the excitement of a new Star Wars movie didn't keep it immune from my ridicule even before it left theatres!

mmm...I actually quite like Sith.
I think it flows better than the other two, has great visuals, and just love the music. I also think the acting is pretty good all round, especially compared to Hayden's in AOTC.
Ok there are some flaws with the continuity, but I just tend to ignore those.

I'm a fan of all the films, Prequels included. In fact, I'd have to say that ROTS ranks #2 for me in the saga. True, TPM is last in that ranking, but one of the films had to be ranked last, right?

I like:
- The Podrace (especially the extended one)
- Qui-Gon trying to open the doors with his saber. In the Star Wars movies there were alot of moments when I thought, just use your damn saber and finally I saw someone use a saber as I would
- Anakin going after his mother and killing the sandpeople (I like him using the force and his saber as he pleases in general)
- Anakin and Obi-Wan final battle
- The clone war in general
- Anakin getting the suit

I didn't think the movies were bad until everybody started bitching about them. I think Clones was a bit boring in the beginning and it took a bit too long for the action to begin. But I liked it. When I walked out of the cinema after seeing Sith I didn't really knew if I liked it. I expected a bit more I guess + I still had a lot of unanswered questions. I expected everything to fall in place, but that didn't really happen. Vader says in Jedi "you don't know the power of the dark side...", it sounds so powerfull and cool. I expected to find out "something" about the dark side in Sith that would show me perhaps why the dark side would be stronger or some sort of secret powers, just something. That didn't happen ofcourse. I still like the movie though.

Oh, yeah as far as specifics go:
-Lightsaber duel at the end of TPM
-Darth Maul
-Pod race
-Jango Fett, even if it did kind of spoil the mystery of Boba Fett. I suppose it was more about seeing a Fett in real action as opposed to very little in the OT.
-Obi-Wan flying around the universe on his detective mission.
-Anakin executing Count Dooku
-Order 66
-Palpatine/Sidious pure giddiness over being able to show his true colors of evil
-Obi-Wan vs. Anakin/Vader
-The twin suns of Tatooine

There's more, but that's all off the top of my head.
I'm nice men.

I thought Qui-Gon was a good character.
Ewan as Obi-Wan was one of the only good things in the PT.
Lightsaber duels are quite entertaining, at least in TPM and ROTS, but they aren't as epic as OT fights.
Some scenes in ROTS are good and fun to watch.

But I don't understand the pod race. It's like the most boring thing ever. CG pods racing many many many minutes. I actually once fell asleep during it! It just feels stupid and useless, just to show what ILM can do (which isn't even very impressive)... And the extended race. That was the worst DVD change in TPM! At least in my opinion.

Hmmm...what didn't you like about some of the recycled music? I thought, for the most part, it was used in the right places and sounded quite good.

Well, we share the same opinion then, because I thought the pod race in the theatrical version was quite long enough, and the extended version was just a bore!

But I liked the music

The... Crap! I could have sworn I had a list prepared, but suddenly I can't think of it! I'm sure it will come to me later.

Useless? How are they going to get of the rock if Anakin doesn't win?
If you think the podrace is useless do you also think flying through the Death Star trench is useless? I mean, they could have skipped all the useless flying in circles. Just approach the thing from the right side and just go for the "target shaft". Useless or not, it's just fun.

Would you guys feel different about the podrace if it wasn't cg but real models?

Probably not. You bring up a good point, but I just can't explain why the Death Star trench run is always exciting, and the pod race often gets boring. Once again, especially the extended version on the DVD as opposed to the real version. With that in mind, the Death Star trench run gave very brief introductions to the pilots you'd be seeing during the battle, whose feats you'd continue to see throughout the battle, which determined their characters and made you feel attached to them. Except for Sebulba and Anakin, I never felt compelled to care about anybody in that race. When you add in that stupid introduction ceremony that slows the pacing to a crawl (hmm, interesting that Mr. Fast and Intense seems to have a knack for bringing the pace to a complete standstill during key moments), it becomes even more ridiculous, since he's now actively trying to get you to care about these characters, but it's even less effective (and much more annoying) than the very brief pilot introductions during the trench run. Just some food for thought.

In the OT you could easily have emotional ties to the characters... the death satr run was a noble effort with the whole good vs evil thing going on. It also should be noted that the majority of OT was the basic man vs man theme. The audience can identify and have a emotional ties with real people. Weird and wacky cg critters are next to impossible to identify with as an audience. The only person in the race was Anakin and he just wasn't an interesting character. not to mention the editing for the Death Star was awesome with its build-up and music.

I have to agree there. I admire what they were trying to do by having the sound effects be the driving emotion, but it just didn't work in my opinion. I only started to get interested in the last lap when they introduced the score, and the conflict between Anakin and Sebulba reached Ben-Hur proportions. Before that, it was honestly just a bore.

That's thing with the OT, we had this whole film to like these characters and root for their success, but in the PT we're just not given enough (character-wise) to root for these guys. Lucas sets up these ambiguous situations which mete out nothing. Are Amidala's people REALLY being starved by "the thousands?" (in only a day?). Amidala doesn't LOOK like she cares. Qui-Gon doesn't seem to care a whole lot as he's mucking about this with stupid little kid and taking the time to sit through a pod race. If things really were truly dire, wouldn't there be a greater effort to stem it?

Oh right, we're suppose to comment on things we like. There's some good cinematography in TPM. Some nifty designs for aliens and vehicles. I like the TF hover-tanks. Battledroids wouldn't be so bad if they didn't sound like Donald Duck.

I like...

- some aspects of Coruscant
- most of the chase through Coruscant at night in AOTC
- the asteroid belt battle in AOTC
- parts of the pod race
- the Jedi funeral at the end of TPM
- the use of ending scenes similar to the OT ending scenes
- pairing of similar themes, incidents throughout the PT and OT story arcs (not to be confused with jamming every other OT character into the PT)
- Mustafar, Utapau, Naboo
- Gungans and Neimodians (in theory only)
- Watto! (more awesome than words, especially with his little helmet in AOTC)
- Obi-Wan telling Padme "I'm so sorry" when he finds out she is pregnant by Anakin - that whole scene is pretty good, actually
- Obi-Wan delimbing Anakin and leaving him to die (taking him out like a rabid dog that can only injure others before dying a horrible death)
- the handing off of the children (minus the ostrich that Obi-Wan is riding)

and

- MagnoliaFan's editing choices, particulary in Balance Of The Force

Overall, though, there was so much potential for the PT that was just lost in George's vision. Very little seems to match the spirit of the OT, and the Clone Wars were handled miserably, as was Anakin's fall from grace and the rise of the Emperor (how hard is it to make makeup that matches ROTJ?).
