Is it wrong to name your kids after a Star Wars character? — Page 3

Hey Ric, is Mestre Boneco a national celebrity in Brazil? What does Boneco translate to?

For the rest of you, in Capoeira, a Brazilian Martial art, you get a nickname. Most people get it when they are young, then they grow up and still have their little kid nickname. My teachers have been Master Big Lips and Master Pinky. I went by Tomate, or tomato, because my Irish complection gets so red when I exert myself.

But it's a kick to see these big bad-ass Brazilians calling themselves "pinky" in public.

Now we just need a Master Brain and they're set to take over the world.

You do capoeira, Starboy? Cool... And look at the irony: I'm from Brazil and I do kung fu.

I have never heard of a Mestre Boneco, but I'm not into the capoeira thing. I can garanty he is not such a big celebrity, or I'd have heard of him. Boneco translates to "doll", BUT... only to male-figure dolls. "Barbie" dolls and such are "bonecas".

Pinky? Really?

“Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country.” — Nazi Reich Marshal Hermann Goering

Boneco is one of the heads of "capoeiral brasil" and touts himself as quite the stud. He's got magazine covers with himself on it and some brasilian film credits and so forth, but having met him I always wanted to ask a Brasilian if he really was a "name on the street" or if he was just on the covers of small local publications who had no news to print.

Yeah, Mindinho went to capoeira for the first time as a young kid, to hit on a girl. His first class was her last class, so that didn't work out, but he fell in love with the game. But he was about 12 years old with a bunch of adults, so they called him "pinky." And now 15 years later he could kick my butt 12 ways from tuesday but I still get to call him pinky
