Introducing Star Wars to young children

Author
Time

Hi everyone, long time lurker and new member here. My boys ages 5 and 7 are inundated with Star Wars-related merchandising and advertisements and I am giving thought how to best introduce them to the original trilogy, and to do so in a way that limits exposure to the more graphic scenes (e.g. the charred bodies of Luke’s aunt and uncle, etc.). What tips and tricks have you tried that worked well? I’m sure others have given this thought. Thanks everyone.

You gotta make sure to cover their eyes during all the “droid-swapping” scenes in AotC, for sure…

When I was a kid, I didn’t find those scenes deeply unsettling or disturbing. Even as a kid I understood how appropriate those scenes were in the context of the story.

I must have been 6 when I first saw the OT, and while some of it kind of freaked me out (mostly the Tauntaun being sliced open and Luke losing his hand), I was so in love with the world of the movies that I didn’t get hung up on it. Really, when I think back on my own childhood, all of the stories I loved the most were a little bit scary.

Well with mine, then 8 and 6 (girls).

We fired up Harmy’s ANH and watched it. It actually took a few days, as we would stop and talk about what was going on. They didn’t seem to react harshly to any of the violence/gore.

Then we went on to ESB and ROTJ DeS. Followed the same flow.

After that we watched AOTC and ROTS, then saw TFA in the theaters together, and have since saw R1.

The only scary Star Wars thing to me upon early viewings of the OT (and some of the prequels maybe depending on the year) was the part in Jabba’s Palace in ROTJ as various droids were being tortured. Specifically this shot:

Just goes to show how mileage will vary with kids on what’s scary/upsetting or not. The only thing in the OT that phased me as a kid was the shot of the Taun Taun guts popping out. That shot still kind of squicks me to this day.
I think I had already seen some WWII documentaries on PBS back in '77, so the Lar’s family cookout was not as shocking as it might have been otherwise.
For all the overblown controversy over violence in Star Wars when it came out, it was pretty tame compared to what one could get away with in PG rated film back then. I nearly tossed my cookies during Jaws. 😉

Only you know your kids, you can’t really take advise on the internet about it. Some will see all the gruesome moments and really get into it, and their love of movie violence will flourish there. Others will shrink away from it and never be horror movie fans etc. Your call.

A person can like scary movies and not be into the gory stuff though. 😉

Well then it’s time to put that to the test and throw the 6 year olds in the deep end 😛

Honestly, there’s nothing in the OT that I would shy away from showing a 5 year-old kid. It’s not like they show them burning alive.

I would put this in my sig if I weren’t so lazy.

What I mean is horror is too broad a genre to only think of it only in terms of blood and guts. A psychological horror film could also give a kid the screaming meemies, without so much as showing a single severed head. 😉
The imagination fills in a lot of gaps if the filmmakers do it right.

I’ve been watching the OT since I was 2 and I turned out (mostly) fine. Can’t think of anything in them that bothered me as a kid.

Don’t give George any new ideas! 😉

Seriously though, I have to give him points for only showing it long enough to register, and not lingering on it. It would be a few more years before we could freeze frame it.

One wonders what nightmares we all would have had if Walrusman lost more than an arm as originally planned!

I did toss during AotC’s droid-swapping scene.

Not cookies, though.

Ok, I thought I was pretty knowledgeable, but are you referring to when C-3PO’s head gets swapped with a battle droid body? That scene made me want to punch George Lucas in the throat.

I’ve Google’d it to no avail using the phrase you used to describe it. Help me Darth Id, you’re my only hope.
