Most of this stuff has been mentioned over the years, but this site has some very detailed information and great illustrations of the inspirations and similarities. The pages on Flash Gordon, Dune, and Forbidden Planet are particularly interesting. Great reading for any fan of the genre.

That was an awesomely fun site. I knew most of that stuff, but learned quite a bit anyways ... and it was fun to have it all grouped together as Star Wars influences.
