Info: Interesting notes on Lucas' DVDs

was over at the facility that did the resoration/cleanup for the orginal trilogy. Lucasfilm did their own 4K scanning off a print - not negative. He apparently asked for the highest level of grain removal possible - so that the orginal films would look more like his high-def prequals. It made for such a flat image. Looking at the untouched 4K - it was beautiful (scratched and dirty like gangbusters) - but the “cleaned” up frame just lost a sense of depth and detail. It’s unfortunate, some of their other work that left as much originall grain in (Indiana Jones) looked incredible.

I believe that happened after the print/negatives were cleaned. You do notice lack of grain on the new DVD's, and it's wrong. Honestly. Watch Terminator, some scenes have quite a bit of grain, but that's okay. It's not a huge amount and it isn't anything to worry about. There are some scratches here and there that could have been removed, but gain removal??? If you can clean the film roll enough to reduce the grain, go for gold. Heck, even some level of digital grain removal might be considered acceptable, but trust Lucas to over-do it.

Personally, I like how the OT DVD's match the PT DVD's now. I think Lucas was right in making the two trilogies look more similar in terms of colors and grain. Get in GL's head - it's a six-part saga. Now make it look like one.

When these came out Lowry specifically said these were not 4K transfers, that the films effects would not hold up to that resolution, since there were sometimes many elements re-photographed to make a final image. He said that they were 2k transfers.

Neil

Well at least the reversed surround channels have been addressed.

He could have done so with the PT.

<span class=“Italics”>MeBeJedi: Sadly, I believe the prequels are beyond repair.
<span class=“Bold”>JediRandy: They’re certainly beyond any repair you’re capable of making.</span></span>

<span class=“Italics”>MeBeJedi: You aren’t one of us.
<span class=“Bold”>Go-Mer-Tonic: I can’t say I find that very disappointing.</span></span>

<span class=“Italics”>JediRandy: I won’t suck as much as a fan edit.</span>

i thought they said 4k. but you're probably right... we were there discussing the workflow for a 4K project we're starting next week and I've got lot's of K's on the brain.
