wait, the sandstorm sequence ? on a film print?

One of the early ROTJ trailers had a few seconds of the sandstorm sequence. I think it's on the official DVD.

$1625?! Holy Bantha poodoo!

I have never seen a 16mm Star Wars print go for this much, and I've been watching these auctions for over three years now. Not even Empire and Jedi have fetched this much. I guess advertising it had the original crawl helped.

Ever notice that the people who seem to have the largest amount of throwaway money for things like this (and who always win these auctions) are never the ones who are willing to share their treasures with the rest of us?

Curse the spoiled rich hoarders.

just a question, if i had won, i would have shared it..what does
that say? (and yes, i won other expensive auctions before)..

again, if another copy comes up, maybe i'll try even harder...
but why should you expect to get it for free? because you 'deserve' it?

what happens when you spend your own large amount of $$$$ on
something? will you share it with us???? or will you just disappear
and keep it to yourself.....

yeah, i don't have too much to back up here, but i've gotten a ton
of free 'rare' copies (8mm, mono soundtrack, vinyl versions) from
people on this board...and they spend their time (2 years in adywans
case), money, and effort to share what they got...

maybe you should be cursing the greedy 'freeloaders' that don't put
up any money, and expect someone else to carry the load...

I would put up some money toward aquiring one of these prints, but only after I see what Puggo can do with the lead he has on the 16mm version with ANH in the crawl. Personally, I see little value in spending hundreds (or thousands) on a print if the quality is sub-GOUT.

Also, I would only contribute if the front man (the one doing the bidding) were someone on these boards that I consider trustworthy. For me, this would have to be someone like Puggo, who has already shown their good intentions to this community.

If we ever do want to do this, we should set up a PayPal account that everyone can contribute to, and which will ONLY be used for the purchasing of a print. Plus (and this may annoy some), but anyone who contributes should be able to get their money returned at any point, for whatever reason.

Some things to consider:
-Transferring the film, if the result is DVD quality, may generate a little C&D action from Lucasfilm.
-Most people with private collections of things (films, props, etc.) keep them PRIVATE. They don't want to risk losing their collection.

An Ebay seller in France has three of the documentaries on 16mm. Don't know if they're subtitled or dubbed though. Are the current preservations good enough?

Oh man, a 35mm print! If we could get a hold of that and scan it... :)

ok,
i've put in a much higher bid, but i probably wont try that much harder
for this, since i didn't think this movie was as good as ANH....it just
wasn't as strong as the first..

anyways, if by some miracle i do win it...good..
(but remind me not to give a copy to Skot, since they
think that winners are always selfish)..

How much do classic 35mm films like ESB generally sell for?

Depends on the movie, it's condition, and how badly a collector wants it.

Star Wars was the last one to pop up on 35mm. Unfortunately, the seller sold the reels individually, and was one short of the entire film. The winner of those reels posted on the old board a few times, IIRC.

This is all academic unless someone has access to a 35mm telecine of course. Or owns their own movie theater!

Here's a clickable link to that auction:

Why do the names of the bidders on these things always look like this:

m***m
f***k
j***k
8***8

One used to be able to size up the competition, (recognize the guys with money to burn) before they implemented that feature. >_<

 honestly,

it doesn't help, since most of the high bidders wait until the last minute anyways,

myself and the 1 other bidder are the only ones up there....i just put in a bid,

so i wouldn't forget, and also to see how high this one person is willing to go..

apparently < $1000 so far..

Couldn't agree with you more Sluggo.

I always thought the sale of 35mm films was not exactly the most legal thing in the world. It wouldn't surprise me if this gets taken down.

Just FYI, I can't scan 35mm.  But hopefully someone out there gets it, and can... if the auction survives to the end.

The bidders' names as a**b is eBay's clever way of making more money. I have a friend who's a museum curator, and when he saw something he wanted for the museum, he would put in an early (low) bid.  Other potential bidders would often then choose not to bid, both out of respect for the museum and because they knew he'd outbid them anyways. So eBay would get less commission on the lower-priced sale.  It also stops bidders from colluding - something I did myself, several times.  A couple of times I was bidding on a 16mm film, and told another bidder if he let me win, I'd make a DVD copy of it for him for free.  Most of them just wanted it so they could have a DVD transfer made anyways (an additional expense), so they were often happy to oblige and we'd save each other a huge amount of money.  I'm quite sure eBay didn't like that sort of thing.

We had a discussion about this on the Home Theater Forum recently- apparently it's not so clear-cut. Just owning a 35mm print isn't automatically illegal (which is what I always thought) but it has more to do with how the print was obtained, which is a grey-area. If it's a very recent title, chances are it was stolen- but not necessarily, and it's hard to prove in any case. :-/

With older titles (like ESB) it's even harder, because some 35mm prints were legitimately obtained.

Well, the ESB auction is gone.  Did this guy get caught, or did someone win?
