Seeing my nick, I am sure you can see I will appreciate the FISHER KING disc! Awsome.

ghostbusters
monty python: holy grail
close encounters of the third kind

i know its a long list, and i'm not expecting them all to be preserved on dvd. in fact i know most are already on dvd, just not criterion. i just think people are missing out on the great criterion commentaries supplied for these films.

The discs from your list that I have in my possession to be worked on are listed above. My first project is the Ghostbusters companion DVD, containing the Criterion material not included in Columbia's initial DVD release. After that, I'll get to some of the other Criterion laserdiscs, Disney Archive Editions, and other gems not currently found on DVD.

On a semi-related note: Does anyone know where I can get a relatively clean copy of Robotech the Movie? This is the 1986 re-edit/re-dub of the anime Megazone 23, Part 1. Please PM or e-mail me if you know where I can find it. This particular project is for a friend of mine, but I would be willing to share once it's done

The Monty Python and the Holy Grail DVD is not by Criterion but contains all the material that was on their release and more. Recommended.

Well, not quite all. The LD has a Terry Gilliam-esque animation before the film reminding you about the commentary track. The photo gallery was also done differently by Criterion. (With a nice intro animation that reveals nasty things done to photos of the cast if you look frame by frame.) And the LD has the entire Japanese dub track. I still want to know what's being said over the ending of the film on that one!

i heard that the criterion LD of holy grail only had a couple clips of the japanese dub with subtitles, not the whole movie. hmm...

The whole thing's dubbed in Japanese, but there's also a clip (the French castle) that has subtitles of the Japanese dub translated back into Engrish. That's some funny stuff.

I can help you here. I did a DVD-R version of "Close Encounters" using ALL known footage from all known versions of the film, plus all the Criterion supplements. It's on 3 DVD-Rs.

Somewhere I also have a tape of all the supplements of the Criterion "Wizard Of Oz". It has yet to be converted to DVD-R, but it is a prime candidate for a future project.

If you want "Close Encounters", this is no problem since this project was done a couple of years ago.

Right now I'm working a mammoth project...the reconstruction of the historic "Live Aid" concert. But if you're interested in "Close Encounters", I can set aside some time for you. Just
get in touch with me at hiphats@comcast.net and we'll talk terms privately.

I might be able to help with this. I downloaded from STG about a year and a half ago, the most complete audio version of the original broadcast the various members involved could put together. It's all in FLAC format split up over nineteen discs. One disc is video clips the rest is audio. Out of seventeen hours of music there's under ten minutes footage missing. If you want this, let me know.

Is anyone interested in preserving original mono/stereo LPCM tracks from laserdiscs? With the bad habit of remixing classic films into surround sound, it’s beginning to look like the original soundtracks will only ever be presented in a compromised, low priority format for the ‘purists’. For example, they finally included the original Jaws audio on the 30th anniversary DVD except presented in a horribly compressed Dolby dual mono 192kbps (which is actually two identical 96kbps streams), which pales in comparison to the uncompressed LD audio.

i have to agree with this. there is NO way the original mono sounded so tinny on these "original *insert movie here* audios. this would be a great preservation project. Yellow Submarine is an excellent example.

Yellow Submarine would be a good candidate for preserving the LD version. Besides a different scene replaced by the "Hey Bulldog" song in the new release, a lot of people felt the mild widescreen ratio chopped off too much top and bottom picture information. A good example is the name on the tombstone in the "Elanor Rigby" sequence.

I am finishing up school/exams in the next 2 months, after that I'll be putting together my first few DVDs, I was wondering if anybody had either/both of the Jaws 3 or Jaws 4 movies on Laserdisc. I assume the audio on those LDs is mono? In any case, I'd like to hear about those LDs and determine what I'd want from them for my own discs.

only jaws and jaws 2 were mono. the other two were in surround.

i'm working on Jaws. I was just going to sync up the laserdisc audio with the remastered video. Not sure if I'm going to include a PCM track (Probably won't allow the current video quality with a PCM track) but it won't be as compressed.

So you're actually going to be doing the Jaws movie too? I thought you were just doing some extras as mentioned in the original thread. I hope you'll put those on a seperate disc because I'm not really interested in getting a bootleg of the movie itself since the original mono track was already included on the newest special edition DVD.

However... a fun project might be for you to edit the deleted scenes back into the movie like the extended version shown on TV sometimes. That would be worth downloading.

DigitalFreakNYC:
So, you're just taking the video from the DVD and shoving the LD audio on top? Shouldn't that fit fine with dual-layer? Unless you only want to do a single-layer for this, which seems more feasible. Thanks for letting me know about Jaws 3 & 4's sound. You wouldn't happen to know which ending is present on the Jaws 4 LD, would you? I think all home video releases have had the altered "happy" ending, but if there's a way to get my hands on the original ending that would be good. I really do intend to make a decent DVD for both of those movies, even though the films themselves aren't great at all.

I know about the recent DVD having the mono and the doco, in fact I have to import the US DVD as the R4 does not include the mono and the doco has 15mins worth of cuts. Anyway, the talk about the mono is to preserve it at a higher quality than that of the DVD.

does anybody out there have a cover made for "hearts of darkness?" just curious.

To answer questions:

You have to change/lower the video bit rate in order to have a higher quality PCM soundtrack. You have to compromise somewhere and can't have both. I like the idea of making an "extended version" with the higher bitrate mono soundtrack. Methinks I'll do that. And yes, it would be dual-layered.

The Jaws The Revenge laserdisc DOES have the happy ending. The "regular" theatrical ending has never been put on on regular home video. Jaws The Revenge does pop up on TV quite often and any tv showing will have the regular theatrical ending along with the other additional footage. It would be easy to put a mask on that footage (since it was shot in Super 35) and get what was essentially the composition of the original footage in widescreen.

I look forward to the Jaws project now

I'll have to have a look at how I would go about capturing the movie then. Might have to enlist someone's help as I don't have the best equipment nor is it likely to be shown on TV here. Also, what do you mean by "putting a mask on the footage"?

I was planning on recording it myself so if I do, I'll definitely let you know. It's not showing any time soon but I know that AMC shows it sometimes.

You'd have to mask the footage for it to be widescreen. Meaning, the footage that would be broadcast on TV would be full screen but the DVD footage currently available is widesceen. So you'd have to mask the full screen footage and then transfer it to 16x9.

Okay. Thanks, I understand now. It seems you would be the best person to ask about this; were there ever any "making of" specials for Jaws III or Jaws: The Revenge?
