Info & For Use: Ace Ventura Pet Detective - tv footage

 (Edited)

I have a tape of the deleted scenes shown in the tv cut of Ace Ventura Pet Detective, if anyone is interested, I can cap them off my tape, and an interested party can clean them up. Audio is mono and the video will likely still be interlaced when received. I some cool stuff to give out, but I don’t have lots of time to clean it. Sorry.

What do you mean there's no ice? I gotta drink this coffee hot?!

While I would be interested to see this footage, I would not be able to clean it up as well as others around here.

The point of my post being: what are the other things that you have, the "cool stuff" you referred to?

I'd really really like a copy. I was supposed to get a copy of the TV version of the movie as a whole, but the trader had a bad copy to begin with, so I wasnt able to

Yeah, I've been lurking. Long year, 2005. Looking better for 2006. Coming Soon from me: The Crow workprint, test footage for Skull Cowboy, View Askew Stash Bash Tour video, (maybe) Fight Club Workprint, and all the tv verion deleted scenes I own. Even more after that, as I go thru and catalog all my VHS tapes. What is the recommended method to get you guys this stuff? Raw footage up on MySpleen?

I think the best method to spread stuff is the Pay-It-Forward method. One person sends another a set of discs, that person copies it for one or more people and sends it on, etc.

I have the Crow workprint (on VHS) and the Fight Club workprint, but the Stash Bash and the Skull Cowboy stuff, I'd really be interested in. Can you turn on your PMs? I want to send you my list so that we might work out a trade.

Sigh...it's for stuff like what you guys have been talking about that I'd really like to see a tracker for preservation projects set up...it'd be the distribution of this stuff a lot easier, and it'd cut down on generation-related issues resulting from repeatedly copying copies of copies of DVDs.

Sounds very cool though, hope some of this stuff sees wide release.

I, too, would love a tracker for this kind of thing. If you ever figure out that torrent tracker for OT.com projects and stuff, I'd love for it to become a home for things like this as well.

Uh, do you know what a DVD is? There are no generation issues involved. This ain't VHS.

In theory, you're right.

However, in practice you must take into account the "fuckwit factor". Just talk to Darth Mallwalker...

Even beyond what Moth3r has so diplomatically termed "the fuckwit factor" (I like it) you have to realize that DVD copying and burning is not perfect, even when burning equipment and media are up to snuff, and much more so when that isn't the case. The degree of degradation is far diminished when compared to VHS, but it is definitely there, and it is observable over several generations, revealed by such problems as frame skipping, pixelation, sound sync issues, and so on.

To elaborate:

Let's say that you complete a project, or rip a VHS to your computer, encode it, etc, and you burn to discs--these being the first generation copies. Data is lost even at this point, due to dust on the media, dust in the burner, media and burner quality issues, and minor, inescapable write issues. But DVD video and other formats are relatively forgiving. You can lose a little data along the way, and the loss isn't noticeable.

So these 1st gen master copies get circulated around. So then, somebody with one of these 1st gen discs pays it forward--rips it and burns it. The rip isn't perfect, and the burn certainly isn't perfect, as before. Data is lost at three points after the burning of the master copies--between coming out of the burner fresh as a newborn daisy and hitting the next DVD-ROM to be ripped, the dvd is scratched, gets dust on it, etc--even under ideal conditions. Plus there's some media and dye degradation, even in good media (anybody that believes the claims that the best of media will last several decades is smoking). Second point of loss--when it's ripped. No DVD-ROM drive is perfect, and again, dust in the drive and other issues don't help--so data is lost. And the third point of data loss--the burn. As with the master copies, there are burner issues, media issues, etc etc.

So, from when the master copies are first burned, to the completion of the burning of the 2nd generation copies, there are 4 points of data loss:
1) Imperfect burning of the masters
2) Damage to the masters
3) Imperfect reading of the masters
4) Imperfect burning of the 2nd gen copies

And with each additional generation, there are three more points at which data is lost. And when you factor the fuckwit factor into it, it gets rather nasty.

Which is why I think getting stuff these various projects onto bittorrent trackers, where data loss can be minimized through near-perfect hash-checking of data, (and the distribution of these materials can be improved), is so freagin' important.

I've done a bit of research on tracker setup, but I just don't have the technical knowledge to set one up. I know someone that could set up the torrentbits tracker (which is what the vast majority of private trackers use), provided we can get hosting. I'm broke, so again I ask, is there anybody here that has spare hosting available for something like this, and better yet, technical expertise in this sort of thing as well (seeing as how two or more heads are better than one)?

Or, the far simpler but perhaps harder to agree upon idea would be to settle upon some pre-existing private tracker to call home. But how to chose one, especially one where all the key members have an account. The obvious one is Myspleen, but the Spleen's tight restrictions is what motivated me to make the suggestion of a OT tracker in the first place, where key people would actually be in control of what's going on. So.....any ideas?

Everyone should start saving up for a data start saving up for a data storage rack. At least a terabyte of RAID-1 based , redundant storage. Then you would never have to delete your master files, and just burn stuff to DVD+RW for personal, temporary use.

Any word on what happened to this... if somebody can send me a good copy of the footage I'd see what I could do

Meh, you can have it if you want it. I haven't been able to sucessfully deinterlace it, one scene has some station ID across the bottom for about 30sec, and it was taped in EP. My brother said hes seen it on TV lately, and perhaps someone could watch their local listings and try to grab it on TiVo or something. But like I waid, I can post it somewhere if you want it anyway.

Been a while, but I notice Ace Ventura is airing on TBS this Sunday, the 15th at 4:00pm and again at Midnight. Both airings will last two hours, the original length of the extended TV cut (with commercials). It's possible this isn't the extended version, just the original with more commercials added to pad it out, but it may be what we've been waiting for.

Anybody want to cap? Perhaps a number of captures to be composited with an averaging filter?

That would be real cool if someone could do a nice cap. I have a DVD of the original NBC broadcast that looks really good, and I did a composite of a TBS airing with the fullscreen DVD and it blended really well (in terms of framing). They were both obviously open matte. So if someone makes a new composite from a new capture, use the original fullscreen DVD.

I have the original 4:3 DVD, though I believe it's pan and scan, not open matte. Still, I agree the original DVD is the source to use, since the new Widescreen DVD won't blend with the 4:3 TV footage, and the original DVD has the extra "Dolphin Trainer" scene. I have the original NBC broadcast, but it's SLP and kinda nasty. I'd love a fresh DV cap, and I'm willing to scour TV guide for a good many months in the hopes they'll air it before I fall back on VHS.

IT'S TODAY!

4pm-6pm,
Midnight-2am
on TBS

No guarantees it's the extended version, but feel free to capture it just in case!

I'm happy to report that the airings yesterday were the extended version. The master tape hasn't held up especially well over time, but at least we now have a strong DV cap that can be averaged with any other captures anyone might have done. Here are some highlights from the deleted scenes:

Snowflake grabs Einhorn's gun:

And my personal favorite, an addition so brief that no one ever noticed it: before sifting through the filter in the dolphin tank, Ace pulls back a curtain with a stylistic fluorish, supposedly to reveal the filter, even though it's clear to the viewer that the filter was within view all along:

Nice! When you're done with your Waterworld madness, you thinking of doing a nice EE of Ace Ventura?
