Going by the I.B. prints, it was a bit brighter and oranger.
I’m experimenting a little to make this classic shot appear a little closer to its original cinematography in Avisynth, any thoughts and suggestions on contrast and saturation etc. are very welcomed.

But in the end I’m not sure if it’s really worth all the trouble, the close-up of the suns have to be tweaked individually as many sources suggests they should have a color pallette closer to this
instead of this
and the quality of this footage in the GOUT is horrible as you can see in these captures below, the wonderful DVNR-smear in full force, and the wipe to the garage at the end of the scene makes it all even more troublesome…
Anyway, here is a video sample of my script so far

Well, f**k it. I'll have to do it in sony vegas or something to get any satisfactory results. Nevermind the sample. ;) Will post when I have something...

Yeah, this is a little closer...
...the problem is that you're very limited with what you can do in Avisynth with the internal filters, haven't looked in to all the external color filters yet. But it would be nice to get something closer to the original colors and remove the red shift in the canyon with Artoo etc.

You sure knows how to find old abandon threads. :) These old primitive AviSynth experiments of mine is no good for any comparison. Today, I would actually say the original GOUT comes closer to the real deal than my crude tweaks except the hue on the close-up of the suns. I think with a little brightness correction of your frames, this will look great. How come this reel is so dark?

i've been going through all 38 pages of this
forum.. and all the comparison pages too.
if we have something to compare too, why not?
all the reels are dark, and very saturated.
in fact, the whole movie is very dark.
we'll brighten it up a tiny little bit..
but we think the original movie was
meant to be darker than what most
people remembered it as being.
i like how the red in this scene:
-
gives a reference for the red in the background here:
-
we'll see.

I'm not sure it was meant to be THAT dark. Mike Verta's photos from the private Technicolor print screening certainly don't look that dark.
No, I actually thinks the examples you posted here: http://originaltrilogy.com/forum/topic.cfm/Star-Wars-Colortiming-Cinematography-was-What-changes-was-done-to-STAR-WARS-in-93/post/567965/#TopicPost567965
comes pretty close.

Oh, those? Just to let everyone know, those are actually manipulations I did of SE screenshots msycamore took from that THX documentary.
I just did a bunch of tweaking in MS Office Picture Manager. They were mainly to see if I could make the images more accurate. They're probably a little too bright or too contrasty.
Glad you liked them, though. :)
Yeah but I believe you got the brightness quite right, TServo. Here's an example.

that brightened picture
does look more natural
to me also.

Just because a telecined capture has a particular brightness and color palette doesn't mean that is how it would look when projected. It is really hard to set the white balance and aperture during capture, and almost always needs some tweaking in post.

Never mind. I didn't like the stills at first from your revised version but I found it looks better in motion.

you still get a good idea of it
from the stills though.
the scenes do look better in motion.
but don't all of them?! sometime the
photography and cinematography do
stand out even in the stills to me.
