Info Wanted: the bare minimum - what would you want put back?

People like to make lists. Let’s say Lucasfilm makes a compromised “original-ish” dvd of Star Wars, and said “this is the best you’re gonna get nerds, you can have a handful of 1977 shots back in the movie”. Basically they use the audio from the 2006 dvd and the image from the 2004 set. Color issues aside, and with the “extra” shots simply cut out (the Jabba scene, Greedo’s gunshot etc.) I counted 11 of the 1977 shots that I considered “must haves” to be reintegrated. These aren’t to make the movie cooler or better, these are just to eliminate the stuff that screamed 1997 the most to me. These are the shots I just gotta have:
1.Ben’s hut
2. Mos Eisley-the shot that had a dinosaur and a falling jawa pasted over
3. “How long have you had these droids?”-without the dinosaur walking in front of everything
4.Mos Eisley-entering the cantina, without roaring dewback
5. wolfman drinking
6.Death Star-Han turns corner, runs into 5 stormtroopers instead of hundreds.
7.X-wings take off from the jungle
8.x-wings approach death star rearview
9. X-wings approach, front view
10. S-foils lock into attack position
11. death star blows up
What am i missing? What are your must-haves? Remember this isn’t to make the coolest ideal version, just the most 1977-ish.

Out of these (and assuming the deletions you mentioned), the only must-haves for me are:

2. Mos Eisley-the shot that had a dinosaur and a falling jawa pasted over
3. "How long have you had these droids?"-without the dinosaur walking in front of everything

The rest I can live with. The SEs are so riddled with changes that this cut-and-paste compromise would never achieve anything like a decent OOT. If this came out, I doubt I would buy it.

If Lucas really wants to please the fans, he can remaster the movie from scratch. But for some reason, he seems determined to not give the fans what they want.

You know of the rebellion against the Empire?

Screwed up title card and Luke's green saber aboard the Falcon are two very egregious changes from the 2004 set that should be addressed.

I think if they restored everything in Mos Eisley and the space battle to its original form it would be enough; the changes that aren't part of those scenes are the more invisible ones.

Definitely #5. How can it BE Star Wars without the wolfman? I love that guy.

Ughh! I HATE #2 and #3 as well. But I agree with everything on your list.

I also hate the new CGI Dewback (or is it a Ronto? LOL!) in the "Look sir! Droids" scene, and the entire extended Mos Eisley scene.

The things that don't bother me as much are the more subtle changes, like the sky when 3PO is walking thru the desert, the color of Luke's saber, etc.

Er, Han shooting first?

I guess Mos Eisley angered me the most. They turned a musty old spaceport into Disneyland. But besides that, after reviewing all of the changes throughout the movie, the original movie really just needs to be restored. Going back in and changing matte lines, adding CGI, just is wrong. I mean, what if they went in and replaced the original King Kong with a "better" CGI Kong? Would it still be the 1933 classic? No, it would be some sort of wierd concept project - which is exactly what the SE is. And it shows.

Han shooting first isn't a "lost shot", in other words, they wouldn't need to restore any film elements (the cost of which is what LFL was bitching about last year when they were asked why the orig versions weren't done right) to put that back the way it was, they'd just cut the extra shot of greedo firing.

Well Lucasfilm wouldn't even have to restore the whole movie . All they need to do is restore every changed shot. They already have the groundwork done for the 2004 DVDs (minus the horrible colour problems of course). It would probably only cost them the same as adding Naboo & bloody Hayden at the end of ROTJ anyway. Hell i'd do the restoration work on it for free if it meant we had a real OUT in high quality.

I personally don't have a problem with erasing matte lines and garbage mattes. My reasoning is that they were never intended to be seen, and the picture quality improves with digital compositing. I agree with you about CGI animation, though. It shouldn't be in there at all. In general, I'm not a fan of digital animation in live-action films, even new films.

They removed the shot of him exploding and I think hitting the table as well. Plus Han's line right before that is shortened. So its more than simply hitting the "undo" button, there would be some reconstruction involved.
But its all moot anyway, since LFL's whole "cost" angle is a complete manipulation (aside from the fact that the O-neg is not a necessary requirement).

Damn, is there really footage cut out of that scene? What a pisser.
Maybe a better question would be, if for some weird reason Lucas decided that the last, Final Cut version should actually be CLOSER to the original, what would you most want in there? (hey, you never know, it sort of happened with Spielberg's 3rd version of Close Encounters)
