Info Wanted: attempts to fix yoda in the prequels — Page 2

Indeed.  But who's up to the challenge of fixing the whole movie?

Well, maybe when Ady eventually starts working on the prequels in a few decades or so...or I could attempt it because I have Final Cut Pro and Motion but no After Effects. I could probably at least come up with a proof of concept even if it doesn't look perfect...again Ady's already doing this with the ESB emperor hologram. Of course, Yoda in all three prequels is a much larger endeavor but It wouldn't be impossible.

EDIT: ahh...stupid double posts....

Making Yoda green in TPM would be a good start. He's kind of a sickly brownish green.

In that shot of Yoda on Geonosis Octorox posted on the last page, am I the only one who thinks he resembles Chucky (the possessed doll from Child's Play)? I think it is the hair, but from the first time I saw that scene, that is all I have been able to think about. Seriously, just dye his hair red and put him in some overalls...

It seems like they could have just scanned the puppets face and made the PT Yoda look a lot more like the original Yoda, instead they got the eyes all wrong, they are too sunken in, his brow isn't right either. They always used the weak excuse of "he is suppose to be younger" as if a guy that old would change so drastically in a mere twenty years. Surprisingly, the Clone War CG Yoda actually looks pretty good, his face looks much more like the OT Yoda despite the animation style.

I'm afraid TPM's version of "Yoda" is a lot harder to fix. His neck is too skinny and his chin to jagged. He also looks slimy and is barely wrinkled at all. Plus the transfer of TPM absolutely sucks. I had to blur Yoda's eyes a few times to get them to look as soft

Alas, with the eyes so blurred now, it just looks kindof awkward.  I see where you're going with this, though.

That's actually not bad.  Still looks a little too green, though.  Play with the yellow/purple and blue/orange sliders a little more.

My outlook on life - we’re all on the Hindenburg anyway…no point fighting over the window seat.

I agree.  For those of you who are stuck on the idea of Yoda somehow looking younger, I think that latest Octorox pic is what Yoda should have looked like as a younger version.

fully agree.  TPM yoda always looked like he was stoned.  Your effort here is fantastic!  Not only does yoda maintain a "younger" quality, but his look is one we recognize, and its focused.  Keep it up!!  I just hope someone can replicate this concept in video format.

The more I look at this the more i think it might be well possible with actual footage. If you can tweak things enough via colour correction and such then you might be able to get a good look simly working with redoing the actual eyeballs. It'd be very tedious but possible. That is - purely going for a more 'ESB' look to the character. at least as a base i guess...

the last picture is an improvement.

but like you said, still pictures are one thing,

video is another..

good luck

This looks like a noble effort, but I don't see how this could be accomplished with moving images. The trick that Adywan's using for the emperor in ESB Revisited is a very brief shot using a hologram (easier to hide imperfections) and a head that isn't moving.

That said, I'd love for someone to prove me wrong though.

You know of the rebellion against the Empire?

Yeah but how do you think he rotoscopes the lightsabers. Its the same idea. You move it a little each frame.

A lightsaber is the same from all sides. A face is not. To replace a face as it turns, you need the replacement face from all the same angles. Plus, as humans we are trained to see faces; this would have to be seamless for it to work.

you would probably have to construct a different CG model

of yoda, with different characteristics, and modify that to

make it look more like a puppet...

(ironic isn't it)..

or find a puppet, and photograph/digitize that..

hmmm....I guess using all the video clips available from ESB, combined with the ability to slow down and speed up the footage, as well as morph and tweak the perspective, would provide enough. It would have to be approached on a scene by scene basis. It doesn't help that the puppet Yoda in ROTJ looks off too. I think the CG Yoda was modeled more after that one, looks more like a chipmunk...

Wow, that modified TPM Yoda is a vast improvement over the original. Not sure why they made his eyes and nose so different. Actually looks like Yoda now. Ears still look a little large though...

Yoda doesn't have a whole lot of scenes in TPM really, and he doesn't do a whole lot of moving around in the few scenes he is in. I much prefer a fixed puppet in TPM to a potential full out CG replacement. If anybody feels like tackling just the Episode I with this idea, I for one would be thrilled.

I heard something about SOTDS having a more puppety Yoda, is this true?

IIRC, Trooperman dropped some of the frames in the Yoda footage to make it more 'jerky' and therefore more 'puppety'.
