Yes, it’s sacralige, but has anyone ever done and edit of 2001?

It would be interesting to some re-editing, cut down the “long” scenes and maybe play with the sound to make the film tighter and more straighforward (perhaps giving it a feel more in line with 2010).

Don’t get me wrong, 2001 is a masterpiece and whomever fan edits it may end up going straight to movie hell, but it IS a prime candidate; almost anyone who discusses the film, no matter how much they love it, admits it’s almost impossible to sit through more than once since it’s so long and drawn at at times.

Sounds like a fan edit project to me!

It sounds like a fascinating idea. I have to admit, I've never seen 2001 in its entirety. Certain parts are quite arresting, but as a whole, as you said, it draaaaags. I think it would be quite possible to knock 20 to 30 minutes off of the film without losing the impact. A film doesn't have to have a pace that is downright glacial in order for it to have meaning and substance.

I think 2001 is perfect as a film. It is slow, but it is what it's supposed to be.

That said, I will be first in line to check out an edit of it. Just because a film is fine the way it is, doesn't mean that someone elses interpretation of it won't be cool. Bring it on!

Well that's the thing... if you look at it in context, when 2001 was released in the 60s, no one had seen anything like it before and the ONLY way to watch it was on the big screen, where it's far easier to become engrossed in what you're watching.

People seeing 2001 for the first time in a theater BEFORE the onslaught of visual effects movies were NOT bored; they were amazed and it was the Star Wars of it's day.

Even Kubrik has said it wasn't meant to be seen more than once. This is why people are bored with it now; they've seen it before, or they've seen plenty of effects before, or they're watching it on TV.

I have two ideas for a fan edit of this film.. one would essentially be "2001: The Repeat Viewing Cut" where I would simply tighten up the long, drawn out moments and pick up the pace, making the movie less of a "fast forward" festival and the other... well, the other I'm going to keep to myself for now just in case I actually do it!

this thread reminds me of my best friend whom i've converted into a film buff from (gasp!) one of those "michael bay"-lover types.

i made him watch 2001 for the first time and the space segment landing was HILARIOUS!

he just kept looking at me like "WTF???" and i started laughing so he got frustrated, turned off the film and refused to talk about it...


CLASSIC!


no. i wouldn't change this film.

(we've watched this again with a new appreciation )

There was someone who was going to attempt to use the Alex North score, but a test run made it obvious that it would sound like a cheesy 60s sci fl flick. Kubrick was the genius he was for a reason. The fanedit forum had someone looking forward to it and commenting how much he "hated the temp score" (of classical music) ! LOL!

That was Devilman who was gonna have a crack at the Alex North version. I supplied the CD for it along with the notes..

Yeah, that's the one. Makes the movie seem less significant. Would be an interesting exercise, though.
