Info Wanted: Which Anamorphic Transfer is better?

 (Edited)

I just started coming here and I understand that there are two anamorphic transfers of the OT both using the Definitive Collection LDs as their source. I understand they are known as the “Dr. Gonzo” and “Farsight” versions. Which one is better? What are their relative strengths and weaknesses? Are both missing the “Leia welding scene?” Comparisons? Any other relavant info?

I'm not sure sure but I don't think a lot of people have seen the Farsight version.

I imagine Rikter and a few others have but there doesn't seem to be much interest in it (on here, anyway). I suppose with the release of the 2004 dvds and the promising looking MeBeJedi's version coming soon, as well as (hopefully) Laserman's version to come a bit later has taken up most people's interest.

A few screenshots of Farsight's version were posted in the Bootleg thread - I'm not sure if they are still up though.

Thanks. I'll have to check that out. So that would mean that most people on here who refer to an anamorphic set are therefore referring to the more common "Dr. Gonzo" version? Okay. I'm trying to get the 3-disc non-anamorphic "Kristhemovieman" set right now, and will probably get the TR47 7-disc set as well. I'm just wondering if I should bother getting either of the anamorphic sets, and if so, which one? And so there is a lot of interest in the "MeBeJedi" and "Laserman" transfers? What about TR47's possible new transfer? I haven't seen much interest there. Are there any other transfers on the horizon I should know about? Can anyone here compare the 2 anamorphic sets?

Kristhemovieman did post here for a while - could be worth sending him a PM.

Any anamorphic set referred to is most likely the Dr Gonzo set - unless stated otherwise

TR47 says he'll post more info on his coming set when he has new info to post. As far as I know there is little information on this new set - that he's posted here, anyway.

A lot of people here prefer the quality of TR47 over the Dr Gonzo version - I have to say on my 32" widescreen tv and low-mid range dvd player there isn't a great deal of difference to me - and whilst the TR47 does just seem a little sharper and the sound better, it does by no mean suggest that the Dr Gonzo version is not a great quality set in any way.

Hope you find the info you seek

Thanks for the info.

I am in contact with Kristhemovieman, I sent him money to buy his set based on the review at Prillaman.net before I came here and there was a mix-up and I didn't get it. We're sorting it out now.

I have a low-mid range DVD player and a 32" Sony Trinitron TV, so I don't know how much difference I'd find either. Do you think it is worth having both the TR47 set AND the Dr. Gonzo set? Or maybe I should wait until any further transfers are done as they're likely to be better than the Dr. Gonzo set and also anamorphic....what do you think?

Yes, they both don't have the "Leia welding scene".

The "Farsight" version has a much better image and sound quality but lacks a menu and the audio commentary featuring on the "Dr. Gonzo".

So I guess the Prillaman site reviewed the Dr. Gonzo version because the anamorphic set he reviewed had menus and commentary tracks. But now the commentary tracks are available on the TR47 7-disc set bonus discs, except there you can't turn it on during the actual movie and, instead, have to watch the scenes with the commentary separately, right? So, I guess no currently existing anamorphic bootleg has the Leia welding scene. Oh well, as long as it's on the other versions. Any way I can see an example of the quality of the Farsight set as compared to the Dr. Gonzo set? Anyone here selling the Farsight set? Between this site and the Prillaman site, I'm going to be an expert on SW DVD bootlegs! lol. Anyway, thanks for the info, keep it coming.

So who offers the Farsight set? And does anyone have vidcaps or anything from it?

You can download it via BitTorrent from MySpleen.com. It's pretty good, but it is missing a few pixels of the original picture on each side and the white levels (slightly too bright) and the color balance (slightly blue, I think) are a bit off compared to Dr. Gonzo and the TR47 set. Dr. Gonzo has a weird "line echo" thing going on though... seriously, look at any frame, and edges within the frame are echoed lightly a tad to the right.

Hmmm...Interesting. Can someone explain this whole BitTorrent thing to me though? I had never heard of "Torrents" before coming to this site.

It's classic troll behavior.  I'm amazed he's still here.

Sorry.  I will do so in future.  But coltonlolz has been necrobumping so many threads that I thought everyone had noticed.
