I made a comparison between the theatrical cut (russian crawl), the workprint and the HDTV, here you are my conclusions:
- theatrical misses 72 frames between the six reel changes - I suspect this is present only in that russian print, must check with the DTS Cinema track
- workprint and HDTV have the same colors, and pretty much the same frame size
- when “Star Wars” logo is set at the same frame, HDTV has 36 more frames (in comparison with both theatrical and workprint) after the crawl disappears and the first shot - just 1.5s of still starfield
- HDTV has replaced the wipe at frame 175966 with a cut
So, to recreate the theatrical cut, there are just two things to do:
- delete 36 frames after the crawl (and related audio if taken from HDTV/DVD)
- replace the cut at 175966 with the wipe present on BD
done!

Since this technically would be a “Despecialized” version of Episode III, the audio options would be limited only by the number of dubs we could find for the film.

I completed this as a little side project in 2014. Last night I went through and updated the Theatrical DTS decode and added custom PGS subtitles. I’ll be posting to myspleen later today.
I don’t plan to sync any other Audio tracks, but this should be fairly easy for others to do as this project will conform with the NTSC DVD release. The Theatrical DTS audio does not seem to be missing the 36 frames after the crawl, as suggested by Andrea, so I left that as is.
I have not changed the color timing and this will basically be the same as my previous HDTV release, with different Audio and the wipe added back in.

Nice! Just wondering if you plan on revisiting AOTC, or if that one’s finished. What you’ve already done passes all scrutiny I’ve put it through at any rate. 😉

AoTC isn’t going to happen until someone scans the theatrical release (or at least a gets a few seconds of it transferred). The cost to interest ratio on that one will probably prevent it from happening for a very long time, if ever. The HDTV/DVD could be ‘in the ballpark’ of the digital theatrical release. No visual record is known to exist for that, though, so we can’t say with certainty. It came out only 6 months later, so it’s at least AoTC as it existed in the year of its release. 😛

I wonder if we’ll ever get a DCP of that in the wild, like we did for Back to the Future…
I’d also love a proper record of the IMAX cut beyond simple lists of what people remembered being changed.

I need to thank Jetrell Fo for providing the decrypted DTS CDs. I think he must have posted requests for help all over the internet to get help making this film’s original audio available. Thank you Jetrell, if you are still around!

Yes, I completed work on the audio track. I just need a film to pair it with. As for the 35mm vs. DLP, I don’t think there would be any difference between the two in terms of audio.

There was a DVD website that mentioned this and gave an audio clip but I wasn’t sure if it was on every single theatrical version.

Yeah, it’s still unclear how many of the DVD changes were in the digital theatrical as well. We know that the CGI robotic hand is one change that was in the digital, but that’s it (I think). Presumably that shot is the same length, or a neighboring shot is adjusted to keep with the score.
I suspect that the “Yes” is present in all the theatrical releases, as it was mocked quite a bit, and I’ve never seen anyone defend it with the fact that the version they saw didn’t have it.
The scene with “To be angry is to be human” is one of the bigger changes on DVD, affecting the run time, with a number of adjusted shots. Again, no idea if it was changed on the digital, but you would have thought people would have mentioned the corny lines at the time.
The speeder is just a CG tweak. I wouldn’t be surprised if, like the hand, it was changed for the digital release prior to DVD.

The best version of the theatrical AOTC was Centropy’s version from back in the day. I think it’s only on the Spleen nowadays.
I’d like to see it, but with the invites being shut, I don’t think I will anytime soon.

It’s fine for a reference, but it’s a hideous looking cam recording, of course. There was an svcd as well that seems to be lost to time, but it would just make it a bit less blocky.
