Info Wanted: OOT - Which is the best preservation project?

Okay folks, I have been reading the numerous threads and I need some honest input here.  As some of you already know, I have the Dr. Gonzo version of the Definitive Collection LD’s on DVDR’s.  There are many, MANY versions to choose from nowadays, so my basic question is this:

In your experienced opinion(s) of what is available at this moment, which release is the very best in picture and sound quality?

I highly value your opinions and look forward to getting what is agreed upon as the “best version” out there right now.  If you do not have the Gonzos and want to compare, I could arrange something I’m sure.

I'd wait for Dark_Jedi's V3 which he's currently working on.  Sounds like it will be the ultimate

Best OOT Picture quality: The 2006 DVD releases (the GOUT), which is what Dark_Jedi and G-force are using for their project.

Best OOT Sound Quality: The 1993 Def. Col. LDs & 1995 FACES LDs. The same sound was used for the GOUT DVDs, but it sounds somewhat compressed compared to the PCM sound on the LDs.

When D_J finishes his set, no doubt both the picture and sound will be the best of both sources.

BTW, JediTray- what is that image you're using for an avatar? It looks familiar, but I can't place it.

Thanks for the feedback.  It sounds like, aside from the AVCHD reconstructions, the upcoming Dark_Jedi V3 will be the one to have.  I am just so tired of the 2006 DVD pack-ins with their 4:3 letterbox and low resolution.

Okay, so what is the best version of the OT right now?

For an authentic filmic experience of ANH I highly recommend Puggo's 16mm.

Ah, yes - the Puggo edition is pretty sweet.  Its only major flaw is the severe cropping inherent in the 16mm print, but it's worth it for the experience.

You mean besides all the scratches, furballs, warbles, dirt, and general all-around grunge?  :)

Seriously, thanks for the kind words.

Haha, well that's all part of the experience, in my opinion.  The cropping isn't, so to me, it's the only major issue.

I appreciate the comments, but no, not what I had in mind.

Mother's Transfers were the best PAL transfers in my opinion, not so sure about NTSC but yeah the Gout remasters will be the ones to beat when finally released.

I agree about Puggo's 16mm version. It really feels right, and does have the original mono. (How much is the cropping?) I love all of the imperfections-makes me feel like I'm watching my very own well worn print. :)

For now, when I watch the OT I go for:

SW: Pwnge Edition, Puggo's 16mm, or D_J's GOUT v1

ESB: Ady's Theatrical or D_J's GOUT v1

ROTJ: D_J's GOUT v1

Woah, D_J's is definitely the winner with the most stable image!

Hi all,

Sorry for what will probably seem like a stupid question for some of you but I was wondering what is the best version currently out there of the original trilogy in its original theatrical version?

I have a DVD set I bought from ebay a few years back that had the laser disc versions on.  These are great but I was wondering if there have been any other versions since with improved AV quality since?

If so what should I search for to download?

Cheers
