Info Wanted: Making a 5.1 Original Trilogy Sound Mix?

Hello everyone; I’m a noob. This, as you see, is my first post, though I’ve lurked here for a couple days.

Anyhow, I’m no sound expert (although I do have access to all the programs needed to make my own DVD set; I doubt I will, though), but I’ve heard people vaguely mention the possibility of makin a 5.1 DD mix for the original trilogy (perhaps a combination of the 35mm and the 70mm to fix those messed up music cues in ESB).

Is this even possible? Would anyone be interested in trying it? Also, don’t we have a 5.1 sound mix of the SEs from Dark/Sega’s LD transfers? I think at least one other person made a fan edit of ANH with a 5.1 DD mix.

I hope no one has mentioned this before; I did a search and didn’t find anything.

Yes, it's been done. By me, awhile ago, and recently by someone else (forgot who.)

Are you going to release them timed to the OUT discs? I believe this is the main question Kalinda would like answered.

Also, MBJ... did you just take the raw digital audio from the THX LD's and pass it through a DD decoder to produce the 5.1? And if so, wouldn't this be essentially the same as the retail DVD's soundtrack passed through a DD in a 5.1 home setup?

Or did you go through and somehow make a new 5.1 mix?
Some were not blessed with brains.

None of us here like Lucas or Lucasfilm.
I have death wishes on Lucas and Macullum.
we could all probably get 10s of thousands of dollars!

Actually, it was a software-Pro-Logic decoder, but correct otherwise, though I don't know anything about how the current DVDs made theirs, nor have I bothered to find out (this isn't aimed at you, BTW.)

And final soundtrack options haven't been entirely nailed down yet.

As far as I know, the only Dark/Sega collaboration has been to preserve the Japanese Special Collection laserdiscs, not the '97 SE.

Maybe you're thinking of dark_jedi's '97 SE preservation?
According to russs15's site those have DD 2.0 sound.
It seems dark_jedi did analog capture rather than a digital rip of the 5.1 track.

However, in practice you must take into account the “fuckwit factor”. Just talk to Darth Mallwalker…

Any chance of seeing them in a new preservation?
