unfortunately the official is missing the extra 20 minutes of footage added to the 1991 home video release does any one think it possible to use the 1991 laser disc for the missing footage and restore the extra 20 minutes of footage to the film.

I know TCM has shown a longer version of the movie than you'll see on the current commercial releases at least once but I don't know if it was capped.

Do you know if the missing footage is found as an extra on the OOP double-sided DVD or the recent Blu-Ray release. Incidentally, I reccommend using the Blu-Ray transfer as the source since the DVD in DNR'd (you can tell by the opening by Saul Bass).
I'm not quite sure how the deleted scenes were broken down. After watching the movie on DVD (the shortened, 2:39 version), there were some lines of dialogue as well as entire scenes absent. I doubt the deleted scenes include snippets of footage.
While I realize that the VHS version (the same shown on Turner) isn't perfect (the cropping is different), it is the most complete that I have seen...and is, I think, the same version available on laserdisc.
...I'm pretty sure the deleted scenes are the same on the DVD and Blu-Ray, though I haven't checked the Blu-Ray. In fact, it was my dismay that they hadn't released the 182 minute that led me to this board rather than purchasing the Blu-Ray...
I suppose I would be satisfied with a 'rip of the Turner version, or even a VHS-rip, despite its absolutely terrible quality, but I was sort of hoping to find a laserdisc rip somewhere. So far, I've failed in that...even some sites that I have found some real gold on (check out The Asylum of Oblivion if you're looking for the extended tv-cut of Needful Things, for example).

Ha! I think that if I were to attempt a fanedit, I would savage the film so badly we would all be better off with VHS-rips from the 90's...
I saw the TCM cut about a year or so ago, first and only time I've seen the film. Felt like it was overkill to be honest. But a Cinerama film needs a large screen and venue.
That said, I became fascinated by the presentation history and editions. From following different threads and articles:
The TCM cut is indeed the Laserdisc extended version in SD, and an old SD at that. The added footage (+/- 20 minutes or so) came from a used promo 70mm reel and was not properly restored. They just did a simple film to tape transfer at the time to keep costs down. It looks quite dated today. IIRC, the TCM version was at least in scope 2.35, perhaps a little wider but it was hard to tell on an old crt TV. It should for all intents and purposes be the same as the Laserdisc, but there may be further differences.
It's really going to be those added scenes that are the difference. The original DVD release (yellow spine) had scenes on the flipside of the disc, but I don't know for sure if this included those added for the extended LD/TCM version. They should be, and this would would give you a professional transfer of the early 90's era digital video which would look much better than any cap of the LD. Then it would be a matter of cutting the footage back in to whichever version you own/prefer-though adding this to the new Blu-ray would be a bit of a jump back and forth in quality.
