Info Wanted: GOUT - Anyone done an anamorphic version? aka which version to get?

After reading the fantastic website (http://secrethistoryofstarwars.com)secrethistoryofstarwars.com)”) I’v decided to try and get an original copy of the ‘original films’ as best I can anyway. Why? Well mainly this website really drummed home how distorted the original films have become with not only new scenes being added but also the actual cinemtography of the films. Sure there’s some scenes which are kick ass, such as the space battle but I’m thinking that I’d prefer my children to watch the version that  I watched (near enough) when it comes time.

After checking on the screenshot comparisons it looks like the GOUT’s picture is a few shades under the actual DVD (although still looking very good) and so I was wondering if anyone has ever done a 5.1 anamorphic version of this?

If not, which is the best version to get really? I was thinking of the classic versions originally but now Im thinking more of some of the laser disc ports that are out if not the GOUT.

If anyone could confirm and advise it would be much appreciated,.

...states that 5 fan made preservations are anamorphic.

But if you want the best preservation of Star Wars. I highly recommend OCPMovie's Classic Edition 2.0 Version:

and the Lucasfilm Pwnage Edition:

PaulisDead2221 is currently working on a Vintage edit which we don't know when it will be available:

Best part of the PWNAGE edition is the anamorphic image, better colors, and the choice of original stereo and mono. I love it-it's what the GOUT should and could have been!

How does DarkJedi's GOUT project compare  to this?

DJ's version looks a bit better.  It is dual layer and has mono, 2.0 and 5.1.

G-Force's version of ANH is astounding.  I cannot wait for ESB and ROTJ.  I'm looking forward to them more than ESB:R and the other AVCHDs, simply because I love to see the theatrical versions looking so good.

Sure would LOVE to see a sample or something of this,I just can't believe that this version would be SO much different than the one I did,and I used a way better encoder, but hey,to each their own right?

and if it is SO much better than the other scripts, why not let some of us see what we can do with the script with our own encoders and settings.

I don't know.  I wasn't trying to belittle your versions, mate.  They were the first time I'd seen the proper original trilogy in true widescreen glory in ages, and I was absolutely delighted with them.

I just happened to put G-Force's on my television when I was doing something one day, and a number of other people came and watched and said it looked terrific, and it's only a single layer.   I thought G-Force was going to release the scripts.

Which encoder did G-Force use anyway?  HC Enc?

We need to update the screenshots thread with these new versions - yes I know I've been saying this for ages now. In the meantime, there are a small number of shots comparing the GOUT with the Pwnage Edition here - can anyone provide the same for DJ's and g-force's versions?

I hadn't been following g-force's thread that closely, I didn't realise there was a newer script than that posted.

I've read good things about HC Encoder from respectable members on the Doom9 forum; although I've not tried it myself as I am so used to CCE. Apparently it is slower than CCE but produces comparable quality. It is wrong to automatically assume that CCE is way better just because it's a commercial product.

Quite right.  I've read that too.  It is most definitely slower - I've used both - but I don't think there's much in it quality wise.  Even if it is almost as good, it is great that there is a free encoder for people to use that is so near the standard of a top commercial product such as CCE.

Wow. If there's something better than PWNAGE then I'm all for it. PWNAGE has officially replaced the ANH GOUT for me. BTW thanks for the screenshots Moth3r. I used those to convince people that there is a good original SW version out there and that the GOUT did have issues. Capturing the others would be great for comparison.

Cheers for the really kind replies guys. I'l be honest with you in that I don't own the recent re-issue of the DVD's with the OT on (although i do own the 2004 DVD as well as the OT in Pan and Scan and Widescreen.. But then this thread was about owning the OT in anamorphic format and as far as I am aware this is no available in an official capacity (unless you want the special edition)

The rapidshare link to its cover is dead. :(

I got this release and although I think the colours are much improved, I felt it was really over grainy, especially in comparison to dark_jedi's release (although I'm aware at times this release removed too much grain), and I'm a person who prefers grain in older films.

Still they're all better than what Lucasfilm has released so far.

Any plans to do Empire and Jedi in a pwnage edition?

I'm a little confused, I thought G-Force only released a script, not a DVD?

I'm also confused by the, link in Mother's post above to pwnage edition, this is what the "GOUT" DVD looks like through G-Force's script (although I did modify it to produce a 1:1 pixel aspect ratio instead of 16x9) click here.

Why is my version cropped on the right?

Did you use the PAL or NTSC DVD as your source? The Pwnage Edition was from the Region 1 NTSC disc.

I used the PAL disc, however, I just found my old Laserdisc rips and the framing is identical. I'm not sure what set it is, but it is anamorphic and it has two soundtracks, the second is the commentary, the menu looks like this. Here's the screenshot. I was wondering if the Pwnage Edition used the 2004 disc for the non-SE scenes?

I attached the mono sound to it (setting the frame rate to 23.976fps and a delay to sync it), I believe you were involved in the creation or release of that soundtrack, no? Where can I find other mixes, like the theatrical stereo mix and theatrical tracks from the other movies? Is it only available through usenet?
