Are there any copies of From Star Wars to Jedi available that are better than the Japanese LDs?

Not for the moment, I don't think. There must be a reason why most of the preservations come from there. More than happy to be wrong, of course. If the subtitles bother you that much you could probably do some work on a VHS copy with your deck. I wouldn't think it could surpass laserdisc just based on resolution, but you seem to have worked wonders on your PB78 so I dunno.

I was actually planning to preserve my sealed VHS copy of it!

Should I IVTC it?

Your call. I'm pretty content with my EditDroid extras set Slugo sent me years ago, but I'd be interested in seeing what you could do.

16mm prints are known to exist, (a university has one) but none seem to have come up for sale anywhere.

Where were you in '77?

There is a french version ("Les Coulisses D'une Légende") on the fourth CLV side of ROTJ, in the french "pyramid" box set.

The resolution is not that high, but the colors seems correct (better than the many pynkish scenes found on ANH in the same boxset); there are some french subtitles (in yellow, mainly when showing some of the movies scenes) but I bet they are on the screen for less than 5% of the time, and maybe could be erased using the japanese counterpart, if in the same frame there are no japanese subtitles...

You learn something new every day around here. :)

Could you get some screencaps of it? I would guess it's the Jabba scenes that have subtitles?

The Jabba scenes actually have TWO subtitles... english in white, and french in yellow right above them!

If it's just scenes from the movies, they could probably be spliced in from another full frame source?

If this isn't some bad NTSC to PAL conversion, the potential is there to look better than the Japanese LD.

I presume this has a French dubbed soundtrack?

Yeah, it does: Mark Hamill's narration, but also George when he's interviewed and when there's behind-the-scenes footage with him (all other BTS footage is only subtitled, with the original English-speaking soundtrack).

That's what Editdroid did. Japanese subs still present on the behind-the-scenes footage, though.

Are you willing to do a capture of this, Andrea?

If someone would take the responsability to finish the restoration, yes, I'll be happy to capture it - also three times, with different players, for TOOTing, averaging, median...ing?

But please let me some time to do it, as I'm deeply involved in my own project at this time... maybe at the beginning of the next year, if the world won't finish... ;-)

Well, you know what? The world didn't end on 21st of december (or are we all LOST?!?) and I discovered a really really interesting thing: I actually DO own the "From Star Wars To Jedi" documentary on laserdisc!

Infact, it is included in the Japanese Collector's Set!

So, at the end, I could start a new project myself, without looking for another laserdisc!

...if someone could be still interested, obviously... (èé?)
