Info Wanted: Fan edits, preservations... and US Colleges...

As of this writing, I am in college. Unfortunately, I am worried about whether I am allowed to watch fan edits and preservations, let alone download them, during free time in college. Although I live off-campus, there are times where I have free time in college while I wait for my next class to start. This site isn’t blocked, but tehparadox is. Also, torrent downloading of any kind (legal or otherwise) is not allowed, partially because of the school internets monthly data cap. Sometimes I am afraid that if I bring my personal laptop to school, I would get in trouble for watching projects like the star wars despecialized. What do you recommend in my situation? Should I stay completely legal until I graduate (that means GOUT , and I would probably want to buy a laserdisc player in the future. Of course since I’m in college, I don’t have enough money to buy a high end laserdisc player, and such a thing isn’t a neccesity anyways. If worst comes to worst, do the 97se NTSC VCD’s look better than the 2004 DVDs?) ?

IANAL, but IMO all risk to yourself is directly proportional to the amount of risk your actions place the college in.

Transmitting it over their network, storing it on their machines, and displaying it on their A/V systems are all things that could get the college, and therefore you, in trouble.  Storing/watching it on your own personal equipment in private?  No risk to them, so low risk for you.

Also, if for whatever reason you do get your laptop searched, practice these words: "How'd that get on there?"  You can practice emphasizing different words, such as "How'd THAT get on there?" or "How that GET on there?", etc.  Also mention you frequently lend your laptop to your cousin Reggie who is just a shady character who always gets viruses on your machine.  In other words, your college isn't the cops: Lie.

You think your college has the right to snoop on your private laptop? Not even USA is that fucked up.

Rights?! "Rights" don't matter when Ms. Ignorance goes on a date with Mr. Warrant.

To be fair, my college isn't that ignorant. It allows users to run linux on their private laptops, but its technical support doesn't really "support" it like it supports Windows and Mac.

That right there was my exact situation when I joined this forum, and what I lived with for three long years.

Best advice: WAIT TILL YOU GO HOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If on campus they have all your rights and no matter how you try and defend yourself; you will have no defense in their eyes. College offices are 99.99% absolute evil. I used to wait to get stuff on breaks at home and then actually view/study them in private in my dorm or better yet in the film department I ran on weekends in the Comm building, where I was alone and fixing equipment day and night three days a week.

In other words keep it quiet. It's very hard to do much of anything in school.

I guess I will have to save up money for the X0 laserdisc player. Not likely to happen though :p

A couple questions first. Do the Japanese Special Collection laserdiscs and the japanese episode 1 laserdisc set have english subtitles? Do some versions of the Special Widescreen Edition laserdiscs have better quality than the JSC laserdiscs?

1. Yes, they all do, but the subs are burned-in to the black letterbox area, so they're not in the active picture at all.

2. No, but the Technidisc pressing of SWE ANH uses a different master.

If I were to use my tvs zoom feature, are the subs 16:9 safe? Does the Technidisc version of ANH look better than the JSC transfer, or no?

1. I haven't watched the JSC in a while, but I'm pretty sure the subs are cut off when using the zoom function on my 16:9 HDTV.

2. No, it looks worse IMO since it was taken from a pretty dirty master and isn't as sharp as the JSC. The benefit, however, is that it doesn't have the "incredible shrinking aspect ratio" problem of the other SWE ANH pressings.

The main reason I was asking for subtitles for the japanese laserdiscs was because of alien subtitles.

Ah, IIRC, the alien subtitles are in Japanese and not present at all in their original English in-image form. The international negative was used.
