Info Wanted: Did the THX logo accompany Return of the Jedi in theaters?

I’d think that would be the case, considering THX was conceived for ROTJ itself, but it never shows up in any of the various preservations. According to Wikipedia, the logo debuted with Jedi’s theatrical run. If this is the case, shouldn’t it be included in efforts such as Harmy’s reconstruction and considered as much of a part of the movie as the Fox fanfare? I think it’d be a nice touch and set the time period nicely.

That’s a good question. According to a few sources, the original Wings trailer (http://www.thx.com/consumer/movies/8492259) was used before Jedi in 1983. That said, though they generally indicate that it was first seen at the Premiere (was it Grauman’s for this one?) they don’t comment on how widespread it was beyond that - indeed, how many THX certified theatres were there in 1983?

So possibly not as much a part of the movie as the Fox fanfare, but still an appealing addition for a certain kind of preservation. I wonder if anyone who saw Jedi in a US theatre during its initial run can comment further?

I once got an invitation from the original SW fan club to attend a THX demo, that included a screening of ROTJ somewhere in Los Angeles back in the day. (I still have a similar invitation for a screening of Twice Upon A Time.) Can’t recall if it was 1983, or a bit after. It was a little too far to go by myself back then.

I never saw Jedi with a THX logo, and there were no THX theaters in my area until the mid 90’s.

Where were you in '77?

From what I understand, there were only three theaters with THX certification during Jedi’s original release, one in Los Angeles and two in Dallas. All three showed Jedi in 70mm.

The “premiere” location could only refer to Avco Center in Westwood, Los Angeles. That was the only THX location in L.A., but there was no official “premiere” for the movie IIRC.

I can’t determine for sure, but I think there weren’t any more THX certifications until 1984, when Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom released with the Broadway trailer. So “Wings” may well have only ever been seen at those three “test” locations.

We have a scan of a THX intro, but haven’t used it.

I’d love to see/hear that. Do any of your prints include Dolby Stereo logos?
