Info: My son, the fan editor...

 (Edited)

Apparently my three-year-old has his own ideas of fan editing. Today we were surprised to find the second half of “Ten Apples Up On Top” ripped out of the book and in the trash can. Now, while we gave him a stern talking-to about not defacing books and have punished him accordingly, it was interesting to get to his reasoning. Apparently he didn’t like when the “mean ol’ bear” starts chasing the other characters with a mop.

So he opted to “edit” out that section of the book.

Now, while my natural instinct is to be mad at him for ruining a classic Seuss book that I’ve had since I was a child, I can’t help but ask myself if I’m being hypocritical. After all, look at all that I’ve ripped out or scribbled on, so to speak. Am I a hypocrite, or am I to be commended for teaching my son the proper respect for books?

I am fluent in over six million forms of procrastination.

If your son had somehow managed to make a copy of your book, edit that, and leave the original intact, then that would've been perfectly acceptable

Well, let's see it this way. He made the book to his likings. Now it is even more unique than ever before. Perhaps he could next time use a scissor instead of just ripping it and maybe discuss his editing first with his parents.
Does he know, you do what you do?

Nothing about fanediting is easy.

A classic Seuss book, eh? That's really too bad. Though to be fair, he really don't know any better. And his intentions were good in any case. I'd say next time he wants to do it, he could talk it over with you and maybe you two could do it together, a nice father/son outing!

Gentlemen, you can’t fight in here, this is the war room!

Agreed. Editing something to your liking is one thing. Destroying the original is something else. Ultimately, we are all here because George Lucas destroyed the O-OT in making the SE. If you want to help you son and let him know that there are constructive ways to do what he wants to do, maybe make copies of the book and have him talk to you first before destroying the original. Just my humble suggestion. But I am impressed that he is doing things like that. Shows that you have a creative son there.

ADigitalMan, I am getting a weird signal on this sonic oscillator.
Well, my little friend, you've got something jammed in here real good.
I swear that's the last time I buy from Ebay....

"WHAT'S THIS?"

"Young ADigitalMan, it is time for the truth.

" I am your father. "

(No. No. That's not true! That's impossible!)

"Search your feelings. You know it to be true."

"You have done well, my son. Only through destruction of the past, can we control the future."
"The book was de-Seussed by the dark side of The Force."

"Join me, and together we can rule the toy, movie, cartoon, comic book, book and videogame industries as father and son."
"Come with me. It is the only way."

"Remember always - Lose The Source, dude."
