Info Wanted: Best edits of Ep 2 and 3? — Page 2

Hmm... well I might keep a couple roto shots like the one with obi-wan at the beginning.  But the ones on Geonosis I might just keep the original shots.  I mean I never even noticed them, is it really worth the loss of quality to use his shots instead of higher quality shots that are slightly different?

Also I thought I remembered reading something about him adding an extra shot to Anakin and Padme's scene on naboo.  (where he used to talk about sand and whatnot)

Erm you'd be using his shots rather than recreating them yourself? Sorry but that's just not feasible in an edit. The video quality is atrocious in Attack of the Phantom, no offence to the guy. Lots of artifacting. And using them and reencoding them again would degrade things further.

Sorry to burst your bubble...

Not to mention, morally you should probably ask him permission to use his shots anyway. But even if you did, his shots are going to stick out like a sore thumb.

The quality is already degraded an unusual amount in his edit. I figured that being a pro editor, he'd have ripped using a codec like apple prores422 or even lossless. But using his work in your own would add 2 further steps of degradation on top of this.

No, I'm not recreating them.  I could just do without them.  I mean, none of the other fan edits of AOTC I've seen have these changes and it never bothered me.  And I didn't even notice his when I watched it.

And does anybody know how to contact him?  I mean even if I don't use his shots I'm still using the ac3 ripped from the video stream, as it's quality is fine.  So I should try to get permission.

I'm not aware of anyone successfully contacting him.  If nothing else, you can give credit to him somewhere in your edit (either in custom credits or somewhere on the DVD).

A few edits cut out the whole convo after Padme walks away anyway. Works better that way IMO. You get captain Typho telling them he'll be in the control centre, we see Padme walk away and then it wipes to the next scene as Anakin walks forward.

So having Obi Wan walk back on himself really isn't necessary in that case.

Yes I could do that.  I don't know how to make custom credits, but do you think I should put Phantom Editor or his real name?  I was thinking I could put his name along side the original editors in the credits so as not to alude to the film being a fan edit.

And yeah I might just cut out that scene after padme walks away as you suggest.  And I don't think having the other rotoscoped things he did will be needed.  I mean I never even noticed them.

Probably best to put 'The Phantom Editor' if anything at all. Unless you can get in touch with him to ask his preference.

It's a fan edit, everyone who watches it will know it's a fan edit, no reason to try and "disguise" the fact that it's a fan edit.

Whether it's a fan edit or not, I appreciate editors like adywan who go that extra mile in seamlessly creating new credits that are as professional as the originals.

It's not about disguising, it's about not taking you out of the movie.  Even in the credits.

I'm pretty sure that he also rotoscoped out the "slow steam" effect from the shot of Anakin and Padme arriving in the Geonosis factory, as well as some rotoscoping work in the scene with Dooku and Mace in the Geonosis Arena with the Jedi in the background (since he did some scene readjusting with when the Jedi appeared in the story).

Is this in the commentary? I don't recall...

Yeah it believe it was, along with a couple of those easter-eggs within the movie which showed what he had composited/rotoscoped.

Author

Ah that explains it then. I've never watched it on a dvd player and i've never got the easter eggs working on my pc whether i turn it on at the beginning or not.

Oh.  I don't know how to make credits...

Agreed. I think it best when the faneditor's credit blends reasonable with the rest of the credits rather than sticking out like a sore thumb. Also, Posessed, can you use the real Attack of the Clones crawl or your own custom one instead of the "I am not a bootlegger" crawl? It might have been necessary to emphasize back then but now it takes you out of the movie and sticks out like a sore thumb. It's like an edit of ROTJ I watched that had Family Guy playing at the beginning; though in all honesty I still liked the edit...but I digress...

I don't think Frink was being serious.  And I think he's right.

And yeah I'd use the original crawl.

Author

Actually, for once I was being serious.  The best fanedits don't advertise what they are...just like Disco Stu doesn't advertise.

Author

Sounds like a good maxim for fan edits: The best fan edits are like Disco Stu.

Well consider my comment retracted. Didn't really think of things that way.

My current preferred prequels:

ep 1: L8WRTR's Shadow of the Sith

ep 2: haven't found one i really love but (I'm blanking on who made it) Twilight of the Republic is probably the best I've seen. (don't like the yoda fight at all.)

ep 3: Stankpac's special edition

The lucky few of use who've seen Trooperman's workprint end up preferring that as an episode 2 edit, bloodnose (I keep wanting to call you Wally)

It's the most ambitious edit of episode 2 there is, and is brimming with potential.

Oh why do you have to tease me like that?

(oh by the way is it okay if i use your username in my script for the main character's ship? I was thinking of a name and yours was the first that came to mind.)
