Info Wanted: Best Home Media Release of Akira (1988)

I’m so disappointed with the recent 4K Scan, DNR to death, EE and that shit that you don’t like to see on films shot on 35mm

So what’s the best home media Release out there, I’m fine with DVDs

The “best” is the US 2009 BD even though it’s slightly windowboxed for overscan, it doesn’t have the DNR issues though and has the original Japanese stereo mix (however it also has dub titles rather than proper translation subs)

The re-releases from FUNmation use the same master iirc but exclude the original mix, which is significant because the remix has many changes

The Italian Dynit Blu looks the best (best encode) but doesn’t have English subtitles and only the remixed audio. I recommend grabbing that and remuxing with the 2.0 Laserdisc track which has been synced already. If you don’t want to bother with any of that grab the Bandai Visual Blu or import the Japanese equivalent, I’m fairly certain they’re the same exact discs. Still looks pretty great and has the 2.0 track (though it’s been neutered quite a bit).

I actually forgot to mention initially, the BV disk aside from the overscan issue also has dub titles rather than proper translation subs

I fixed the post though

The true Theatrical Mix Was Never Released On Home Media for what I’ve heard

Why not a 35mm scan of the Japanese audio release in 1080p or 4K? Maybe not.

Probably because one hasn’t surfaced yet? If it did we’d probly be way past it already online at this point. lol

If that’s true then idk how the current stereo track would be any different, seems original to me

The film underwent some extremely minor changes when it was first released on home video. Certain scenes were reanimated and a few tweaks were made to the soundtrack.
