Info Wanted: Battle Royale - has anyone done a preservation of this?

I don’t know if many people have heard about this controversial film but rumor has it that it will never see the light of day in the USA. I was wondering if anyone was thinking of doing a project so that those of us with NTSC only capabilities will be able to see it. Greatly appreciated if someone wants to take this on.

Isn't the R3 release NTSC?

IIRC, the subtitles on the Tartan release in the UK is better but the R3 DVD should be NTSC. I can't compare since I only have the UK 2disc SE release.

I think I've got an HK release that's NTSC Region 0. The original and the "director's cut" are pretty easy to find -- just about every grey market site out there carries either or both.

Thanks guys. Mike, does Region 0 mean that it will play in any NTSC player? If so, I'm all over it.

Reigon 0 means it won't be affected by reigon coding, which has nothing to do with PAL/NTSC-ness. But the Reigon 0 discs Mike is talking about are NTSC (I have them).

I really hate cut versions of movies. I can't stand it to buy a movie on dvd and later find out there is an uncut version. Is there a specific scene in battle royale that I can check to find out what version I have this time?
Fez: I am so excited about Star Whores.
Hyde: Fezzy, man, it's Star Wars.

Here's what IMDb has to say:

8 minutes were added to the 'Special Version' to bring the running time to 121 mins. Around 100 edits were made to the movie including consideringly amping up the sound during the violent scenes. Among the scenes added to the Special Version were: a flashback to a basketball match that Shuya and Mimura played in school; an extended speech given by Kitano to the students; after Mimura hacks the computer system, Kitano shuts down the power to the monitors and acts very ambivalent to it; an alternate 'requiem' ending.

honestly i like the non-special edition better

for some reason when i watched the special edition it seemed vastly different and i didn't like the feeling...

it wasn't as fast and a few scenes (especially the added flashbacks) became redundant or unnecessary.

i thought my take on the differences was weird, tho, because i usually like extended/uncut/dir cut of everything, eheh

I agree, the original cut is the best version. Also the Tartan 2nd release for the UK was the NTSC version. Here is a link in play.com

This is the best version I have seen.

That's good news! Then I won't buy the extended version (must be the first time). I had the same with the last of the mohicans. I thought the director's could would be some sort of extended version but it felt like a completely different film.

Well I ended up ordering from Xploited Cinema and here are the features:

DVD FEATURES
Uncut Anamorphic Widescreen (1.85:1) Version
Japanese Dolby Digital 5.1 Audio

I think I ended up with the DC. Oh well. Anyway, Chris, I'm interested in your version so can you give details? If you turn your PM on, we can talk that way.

I tried that asiandvdclub.org before but it keeps saying that you need to register to view. I can't register because they said they already have the 20,000 member limit. I can't use that site but would love to if you know of any other way in.

they are constantly pruning accounts, so i think you just have to get lucky.

they will lift the limit after they fix some server problems they have had lately.
