Info Wanted: Are there any 1997 Special Edition 4K Scans available?

Hello all,

Relatively new here, for sure new in the area of posting, but I wanted to check. I grew up during the “Prequel Era” of Star Wars, however, my fondest memories or of the original VHS releases of the Original Trilogy. Having said that, I also came up on the 1997 Special Editions eventually, and would absolutely love to get my hands on some 4K scans from some talented folks, particularly that of Empire and Return of the Jedi. If anyone has some information, sharing this with me would be greatly appreciated. Cheers to everyone, wishing you all well.

So a ‘97 35mm print of ANH was scanned, just not cleaned up? Was this from Poita’s project?

What About Empire and Jedi?

Correct

Was this from Poita’s project?

No, this is our own scan of the same print.

What About Empire and Jedi?

Find us some prints and we’ll scan them.

I was under the impression that Poita had scanned or at least had access to all three of them, but I must be remembering wrong.

Poita scanned this same Ep IV print on a professional grade film scanner, but never released anything beyond a few samples. He may have access to the other SE prints too, but if so (as far as I know) they have not yet been scanned.

That reminds me, I’ve been meaning to ask about how exactly the 4k77/80/83 projects were scanned. Over at TheStarWarsTrilogy, the text towards the bottom of the 4k80 page seems to imply that a professional scanner was used.

But from what you’re saying about Poita’s scan using a professional film scanner, am I to infer that’s not what you guys did for the 4k projects?

That looks fantastic. Where can I find this(other than Myspleen, which not everyone has)?

Also I was wondering if there is a grindhouse version of Star Wars '77 from a single source? Because the Technicolor grindhouse version has an LPP reel 1 with LD audio, and the Spanish LPP grindhouse version’s audio is not from the LPP, because otherwise it would have Spanish audio, and I’m looking for an English version.

The picture quality is impressive, much better than the Gkar release.
But it looks like that the aspect ratio is a little bit stretched.

The one i downloaded has black bars on all sides . I thought it rather strange to be honest. Not sure if i screwed something up. It won’t display in 16:9 i have to watch it full frame to get the image to fit my laptop.

It was really strange like a letterboxed edition. I haven’t seen anything like that since the Gout DVDs.

The picture quality is much better than the Reivex or however it was spelled.

Maybe VLC Is the problem as to why it won’t display like an anamorphic film.

I like that it has 3 audio selections. The Laserdisc audio, DTS theatrical or optical audio from the print.

Edit: looks like it was just VLC its doing the same thing for 16mm Empire Strikes back.

I’m really going to have to get another software but MPC is no longer updated.

Is this that scan still not on the Spleen? Would anyone be gracious enough to point me in the right direction? I don’t have a “thestarwarstrilogy.com” account.

As far as i’m aware it is only on The Star Wars trilogy site. You would need an invite. That is how i got the film.

Okay, I’ll hold out until it trickles out then. I don’t want to stress their server any more than it already is for one file. Sorry for the off topic.

The scan features the whole image from the print, so it includes things that weren’t meant to be projected. The footage from 1977 is wider (an aspect ratio of 2.50:1) and the special edition changes feature black matting on the right of the frame. These would’ve been cropped to the proper aspect ratio when shown in theaters.
