I still have my DVHS recorded Cable broadcast. 1.78:1 open matted and more detail vs the 2.35:1 DTheater DVHS release, which was DNR'd/filtered. Moron studios.
Unfortunately, the 5.1 on the DTheater is far better than the 5.1 on the Cable broadcast.
I'm just hoping for a Blu-Ray thatgets it right. But it'll probably be turned teal.
I would say no to DNR, but it is not well encoded and definitely filtered
Just to confirm, the DTS-MA 5.1 will be sourced from what? The LD AC3 track? The LD DTS track? The cinema DTS mix from Jetrell?
Jetrell, if you need me to rip/upload the DTS cinema files, I can do that. I can't splice them together, but I can upload like a beast.
Keep in touch.
Kudos to all for helping on this project. Very exciting indeed.
“Alright twinkle-toes, what’s your exit strategy?”
I've watched the open matte version and it felt a bit less theatrical. (I've got it in 720p with the DTheater DTS track.)
OAR is still important even where 16x9 TVs are involved. Cinematography is an art.
Dr. M
Wouldn't matter if it were open matte, if it fills up my 122" projector screen it would feel pretty darn theatrical to me. LOL
If it means having a better image i'm all for it.
Does anybody have this open matte version in full HD resolution? I know I asked it before but it would be really nice to know if there's a better looking version than the D-theater.
I'd argue an open matte, non-OAR ratio is nothing more than a side show and not acceptable for a preservation project, unless it is re-matted to the proper theatrical ratio. Most likely, visual effect shots would be cropped unless they did the effects open matte as well.
One place this could come in handy is if a 2.20:1 70mm ratio wanted to be used, and again, we re-create the mattes. That of course assumes that nothing is ever cropped.

Yes, even if it's non-OAR it might look better than the D-theater version and that's why I'm interested.
Unless the original is panned differently in different shots, one could just add black borders or something.
Will grab the non OAR and compare some effects shots and some standard shots over the next few days if no one has both
I have seen both, and while the detail is better than the Dtheater version, it was missing a part of the opening credits, and it really could use some black bars in a few scenes (The ending with Simon comes to mind).
You have to love when people drop bombs like this and then do not return to explain or share, or to tell us he is not going to share, either way I say we just work on what we have You_Too and not try and pursue this pipe dream lol, because as you said you already asked and there was no response, so I am good with what we have.

So where are you grabbing it from? maybe this will be our only chance to see this ourselves as well.
Thanks dvdmike

Okay, who dropped the ball? I'm getting the audio ready on my end for receipt on yours. Did I miss something?

I found it once before and deleted as it was not OAR, one of the UK channels either MGM HD/TCM HD or Channel 4 HD are showing the non OAR also.
I think I have found it I will keep you updated

Thanks mike and please do, would be nice to see this like soon lol, I am finishing up the video right now and going to encode, and once we start gathering extras and authoring then it is done, no turning back then, but the wrong OAR bothers me to, definitely do not like that.
Thanks again

boris,
Huge thanks for the offer. It IS appreciated greatly. I'm sending stuff off to D_J tonite or tomorrow morning.
We are on our way .......
:)
It's in storage at the moment. I am not sure if was recorded free and clear or if it had 5C (copy once) protection. If it has 5C I'll have no idea how to get past it.
I'll be down to visit the folks this summer and can find the DVHS tape, bring it home and check.
Funny thing is, I predict any BD release to be open matte since Cameron has a tradition of reformatting to fill TV screens.
HDBits has several versions. I see they have a 1080i DVB/mpg2 version from some newsgroup (not many details, not even AR) @ 15gb and a 1080p x264 version (possibly DTheater sourced with a downmixed audio track).
They also have a standalone rip of the original full bitrate DTS/DTheater audio track.
The rest are 720p (including an open matte one). Funny thing is I don't see the version that I originally got there which was the open matte 720p with the DTheater 1510kbps track.
The point being, I'm not sure there is a 1080i/p version that's open matte.
Dr. M
Since HDBits no longer accepts new members it makes it difficult to check out unless someone from here who has a membership downloads it.

If true lies was being released in 3d I would agree it would not be oar but all Cameron 2d releases have been in oar
So has anyone found the open matte version yet to compare with the d-theater?
The one I found had a password, still looking
Password! oh man
good luck
Makes me wonder why if the hdtv looks so much better,
why is it so hard to find and the d-theater is all over the place?
1. People see D-Theater and think that means it is better than a compressed HDTV feed, which is normally true.
2. The HDTV is not OAR.
