I could set the contrast lower to match better the DVD, but what if the DVD contrast was wrong?

The same argument could be made for the DVD colours not being 100% accurate. But since we know for a fact that the BD is presenting a revisionist version of the movie, the DVD is the most trustworthy source we have available for how the film originally looked.

In the absence of a theatrical reference, my preference would be for this project to match the look of the DVD as closely as possible.

I saw the first Matrix in theaters 3 times opening weekend.  Yeah, I dug it that much.

I was always happy with the DVD.  When I saw Matrix 2/3 and the recolored release versions I was like WTF.

If the DVD is off, it isn't by much.

This is my opinion on the matter .....

I would agree with you and DoctorM on this.  Besides, how perfect does it really NEED to be before people will approve?  Those who enjoy this movie already will obviously enjoy it more if it's taken back to the original DVD color scheme than anything and they'll have awesome choices of audio to boot.  It's a win/win.

Where were you in '77?

Any progress with this project? The Matrix was on tv the other day and the color timing made me want to throw the whole thing out the window.

No at the moment... too much work with EFNY (and its fan edit version), plus BATB is on the go... when I could afford a new 2TB HDD, then we will talk about it - next year at least... (^^,)

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Thanks for the update! Glad to hear it hasn't been shelved forever.

Hmmm.

There's currently a 16.95gb 1080i HDTV version of the Matrix on rutracker that I haven't seen anyone mention here. The 16:9 presentation is clearly not the BD colour timing, and interestingly has a six channel 1510 kbps DTS English audio track (along with several AC3 Russian tracks), whose source I'm not aware of.

It looks pretty good, though some detail has been lost vs. the BD.

Thanks for that, Nick66. Was wondering if anyone had reuploaded it yet.

Do you have any idea about the origin of the DTS track on this file? I wonder if it's DTS core of the version CapableMetal, Doombot and JetrellFo created (that's also on KK650's version) or if someone has simply created a DTS version of the existing Dolby TrueHD track.

I think this 1080i HDTV version is a good resource for someone looking for the DVD/theatrical colour timing, but it's definitely compromised with the aspect ratio and loss of fine grain and detail.

About DTS track, it's probably a conversion from the TrueHD track; russians do a lot of their tracks in DTS, even if quality is rather low - due to the fact they use almost always a "lector" - so mere AC3 tracks will be more than adequate most of the times...

Quality is improved in comparison to the old MPEG2 version, but I agree tha fine details are lost, and grain is virtually absent, even in comparison with the upscaled DVD I used for my project... but, it's still the best HD version of the color grading found on DVD.

If the Russian color is good, though, it might be a good source for a chroma channel.

The problem is, even if it's open matte, it has not simply more details top and bottom that was masked in the BD version; it has also LESS details on the left and right side... plus, add the fact it is not only the chroma to be changed (or replaced) in the BD to have a color grading like the DVD, but also the luma!

Where can I download the CapableMetal/Doombot/JetrellFo DTS mix?  I'm only interested in the audio file, and would like to synch it to my existing MKV of the BD.

Credit where credit is due, I didn't actually do any work on that mix other than give a bit of advice/praise after the initial release.
