Yep that's how i do it using TsMuxer to grab scenes from a movie.
Maybe using just TSmuxer to select the shot you like to extract, it *should* not re-encode the .m2ts file AFAIK...

I will be talkin to the print owner today, we are trying to tee up a local to view the film before pulling the trigger.
If people could PM me re helping to pay for the print, we can see if we have enough to collectively purchase it.

Thanks for the update.
What is the cost of scanning the print? Can you describe the scanning process or perhaps direct me to another thread where you've already scanned another 35mm print? I'm quite intrigued by the idea of doing this and have little understanding of the process.
Basically you clean the print, then feed it into the scanner :)
I have a 4K film scanner similar to this.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0bifK7uh9sI
It works the same way, it advances the film one frame, and captures 4 images, one Red, one Greed, one Blue and one Infrared (the infrared picks up just the scratches, dirt and dust). Those are combined to make a full colour image, with the damage matte in the alpha channel.
Each frame is saved out as a sequential uncompressed .DPX file.
As for cost, to get it done at a scanning company, it usually would cost anywhere from USD$8000 - $30,000 to get done.
If a film really needs preserving due to no good preservation of it existing, then I do it for no charge other than consumables such as film cleaning fluid, postage etc.
The film is then archived and ready for restoration, I colour grade the scan to match the print, any restoration from that point forwards is the concern of the print owner.
I do this because I believe in the importance of preserving our film heritage. I'm not involved in anything other than getting a preservation scan done and matched to the print.

Wow. I applaud you for investing your time and money to preserve films. I presume the Italian IB tech print meets the 'no charge' criteria?
My contribution to the IB purchase has just doubled.
How much HD space is required to store the scan in an uncompressed or lossless compressed format?
Uncompressed, around 16-21TB for a 2 hour film.
Losslessly compressed around 10-14TB
Converted to ProRes 4:2:2 at UHD resolution, around 1TB per 2hr film.

poita,
Can you post any other images you've received of the film?
Do you have a pic that shows the edge codes?
Do you have any info on the seller? Reputable?
I read some posts on a UK forum about Italian collectors who claim what they're selling is an IB tech print but turns out to be something else. The excuse being the opening credits state the film is "technicolor". Now that's shady.
You can tell this is an IB TECH by the soundtrack, IB prints always have a 'grey' soundtrack area.
I don't have any other pictures at the moment, but will be getting some more.

I need to make a decision on this in the next day or so, can anyone that wants to chip in for part of the cost of the print please send me a PM and let me know the amt, and we can see whether it is doable or not.

A thought... here you are the comparison between the italian Mondo BD and the 4K BD:
http://caps-a-holic.com/hd_vergleiche/multi_comparison.php?disc1=4088&disc2=4091#auswahl
As you can see, Mondo BD used VC-1 @28000kbps while the 4K BD used AVC @23165kbps... even if VC-1 and AVC are not the same, they are in the same league - not like MPEG2, and so, how could a BD taken from a 4K master retain ALL the grain at about 23mbps is a mystery to me... I did a lot of tests myself, using REAL 35mm grain, and to retain ALL of it the bitrate should be over 30mbps...
With this, I don't say that Mondo BD, which has an higher bitrate, is automatically better than the 4K, but that *maybe* the former, even if used a 2K master, have the same, if not more, grain and details of the latter...
As I wrote before in this thread, inspecting two clips from both versions, it seems to me that the 4K BD has sometime less details in portions of the image, while a bit more in other portions in comparison to the Mondo BD, while this one has some compression artefacts, visible magnifing the still frame at least 4x... in motion, I have not noted high differences between editions, but again, they are two small clips that *may* not represent the entire movies...
I'd like to know your opinion about this.
P.S. Poita, you are great!

Why the fuck is it so hard to include mono? Why? Do they think we're stupid and won't notice a downmix? Seriously, it's like every fucking Hong Kong release. How hard can it be to include the mono?
It's sad that the definitive Spaghetti Western has no decent release anywhere in the blasted world. Glad to see this is getting some press on this forum, though I wish there were a better way to organize it and search for stuff. Jay?
So what's the best bet for the other Leone films? My understanding is that some of the others have the same downmixed crap, which is which? Evidently the German BD of FOD is a stunner, the German release of FAFDM is good with some controversy, but both have the proper mono. I guess likewise for the Italian release of DYS? I'm figuring I should get those, pick up the unused anthology boxed set for the extras, and hope for the best?

Anyone else interested in contributing a 'few dollars more'?
poita, please forward the seller's contact info via PM. I'd like to find out if there's any room for negotiation.
He has knocked $100 off the price, won't go any further.
Andrea spoke to him in Italy, happy to forward the details though.

To be honest it doesn't look like we are going to get close on this, it is a shame as there would be very few original IB TECH prints out there of this movie.
I'm going to let it go, maybe there are some 'Western' forums etc. somewhere that could get some funding up. If so, I am still glad to scan it. Perhaps some fans here could spread the word in other places.
I am talking to someone who has a 16mm print tonight, I'll see how that pans out.
