I have been following this thread since creation and would like to ask a question concerning the 720p HDTV copy of the movie that has been floating around since circa 2007-08. I just found a torrent that is still active (although really slow and I won't have it for another 48-50 hours) for that release and am wondering if anyone here has seen it and how it compares to the Bluray release as far as the color grading is concerned. The release is of the extended cut, and contains an Italian, Spanish, and English audio tracks and weighs in at 7.56GB. Is it even worth it for me to wait for this release to finish downloading or should I give it a rest?

If no one on here is familiar with the release, I'm happy to post screenshots once I have the complete file.

On side note, massive kudos to everyone involved in bringing this back to the wonderful awesomeness of the original;)

I've never seen the hdtv version so I can't comment. I found the torrent and I'm downloading it now.

I came across something very interesting last night. The US theatrical trailer included on the 1990 MGM laserdisc is unique to this home release. It is from a different source than the other laserdisc releases (1993 box set, 1998) as well as the DVDs and BDs. The sky was still blue in this print (i.e. MGM took the yellow tint to an extreme on the BD) but overall it has a striking resemblance to the 4K BD, no?

Pics taken of my TV screen using my phone.

Just looked that up myself. From my capture of that LD:

LD trailer (top)/LD feature (bottom)

Does look much closer to the 4K but it is a trailer....

PDB, would you be able to do a similar comparison of 1990 LD trailer vs. 4K?

@PDB

Hope you don't mind, but I posted your image over at blu-ray forums and credited you. Just thought it would be interesting to share :)

Sure can. Quick and dirty:

LD Trailer/LD Feature/4k/Mondo

Like I have always said, its not the yellow that bothers me, its the green. At the end of the day that IB Tech print is the best authority.

Thanks for the credit. I have halfheartedly followed that thread but I will check it out now.

Just letting you guys know that I've just released a less saturated version of my regraded release that is a lot more similar in terms of overall saturation to the mondo release. Those that like the mondo release will very likely prefer this less colourful release to my previous release, I feel that it is a lot more balanced overall in terms of colour, especially in the indoor scenes. It is now my prefered version of this film.

I've also removed the grotto scene because I feel it is very poor and doesn't add anything to the film. I totally understand why Sergio Leone removed it and it should not have been reinstated in the US Extended Cut IMHO.

I'll also be releasing a less colourful version with the grotto scene included and a more colourful version with the Grotto scene removed, i've got a lot of uploading to do in the next few days haha

Here's one of those screenshots above taken from the less colourful regraded release:

Please do that. That's the one I am waiting for.

So glad you're still tinkering with this film. Where can we find your latest release? Your thread at tehparadox hasn't been updated yet.

It's in a new thread of its own on tehparadox. It can be found at the top of the main release list.

If you're redoing the mono audio to fix that audio drop at 02:32:50 in the release with the grotto scene, it'd probably be a better idea for me to wait on uploading the other two releases, i'll probably also have to reupload the ones already there. I'm going to listen to your audio track the whole way through, see whether I pick up on any other similar audio drops. Has anybody else come across anything?

I haven't listened to the entire track but I did notice some sync and audio drop issues, which I've described in the audio thread.

Will those who contribute to the IB tech get a copy of the print?

If there is only Italian audio on this print are you planning to make a fandub?

I'm not clear how this works. Perhaps poita, Andrea or anyone else involved in a similar project in the past can chime in?

The lossless capture of the video will be around 15/20TB, not so pratical to have a copy of that! (^^,)

I think a good encoded BD-50 will suffice because, as poita said before, the overall resolution will be lower than the 4K UK or the Mondo BD, as they are mastered from the negative, then good enough to retain all the print details.

Sadly my projects are lost due to an HDD crash… 😦 | [Fundamental Collection] thread | blog.spoRv.com | fan preservation forum: fanres.com

A BD-50 graded to match the IB would be incredible!

Version 1.1 of the mono track is out.

Never mind, still needs improvement.

I downloaded the HDTV copy but it looks like it's from the 2009 BD. Can anyone who downloaded this same torrent please verify?

Further update on IB tech print:

I sent the seller's agent the following email yesterday...

"I am will to send payment but before I do I really need more info on the condition of the print. At this point all I know is that this is an IB tech print. Peter has sent me 5 pictures of some frames.

Can you please ask the owner for a description of the overall condition of the print? How long has he owned it? How many reels? How many splices? Frames missing? Sprocket damage? I would also like for you to send me pictures of the reels, individual sections where there's damage, individual frames, etc.

There's a lot of money at stake here and I don't want to take any risks. If you're unwilling or unable to fulfil my request then I'm afraid I won't be able to complete this transaction."

He replied he will try to fulfil my request. Fingers crossed. Stay tuned!

This brand new italian trailer for the re-release of gbu from the Leone film group looks nothing like the new mgm bluray...in fact I think it looks different from the mondo disc too.

---

Here is a quick and dirty comparison between the mgm 2014 blu, the italian mondo blu, and the new trailer released by the Leone film group. The footage from the Leone film Group trailer looks slightly different from the mondo release. Of course the MGM just looks terrible every time you compare a shot with blue sky!
