I guess it's not really necessary to transfer the video from the LD if the Director's Cut is being released. The official DVD is likely to have superior video to the LD anyway. No news yet on the commentary, but I'd think it's safe to assume it'll be on the retail disc. And if not, it wouldn't be hard to sync up to the DVD's video.

But since it's only going be a single disc release, the 4 1/2 hour documentary should still definitely be transfered.

Since I'm paying MeBeJedi for the transfer out of my own pocket, the whole thing is going to be transferred. The reason I'd prefer to do this is because I simply don't trust the studio at this stage to deliver a quality transfer of a flick they've had sitting on the shelf for so long. Take, for example, the most recent DVD release of Stargate, with the extra 9mins of footage. You can EASILY see where it goes from theatrical to the extra footage, there's noticable grain, dust and even a couple scratches. But is any of that present on my old VHS of the same extended cut? Not at all.

Everything will go ahead as planned, I just hope we can get the money back on eBay now that this DVD is coming out.

According to dvdtimes.co.uk it will be DVD 18 release:
Universal Studios Home Video have announced the Region 1 DVD release of The Frighteners Director's Cut for 29th November 2005 priced at $26.98 SRP. After years of campaigning Universal are finally giving fans what they want, the director's cut edition of Peter Jackson's horror-comedy starring Michael J. Fox - The Frighteners.

Running 2hrs 3minutes the director's cut will be presented in 2.35:1 Anamorphic Widescreen with English DD5.1 Surround audio and optional English, French and Spanish subtitles. Released on a single DVD18 extras are TBC but should be plentiful considering the material available.

You waited long time for transfer and Universal is doing this to promote King Kong remake ...

What the? If they're doing it as DVD-18, not only is it a flipper, but it would most likely include the 4hr doco, as the DVD-18 format is massive in storage space. However, if they can do that - why don't they just do it as a 2-disc set? DVD-18's aren't as common and I would think would cost more to produce, and they break easier than standard DVD-9s. THey also are reported to have a lot of problems whilst playing. This is a bizarre piece of info.

The fact is we don't know. There isn't really any point wondering or debating about what will be on the official DVD. This was just announced yesterday so as ReverendBeastly said we might not be able to get our money back on this laserdisc now.

This isn't really a concern to me. My donation is going into the transfer fee and shipping. So I'm actually one of the people not getting money back on this disc. I'm still fine with this and ReverendBeastly asked me if I'd be cool with this before this project even started. No problem, however I know there are a few people who will be breaking even on this disc based on if this sells for the same price on eBay or not. That could get sketchy now that this DVD has been announced.

In the best interests of those people getting their investment back soon I just wanted to restate that any compression or DVD authoring work I can help with I would be glad to throw down. I know that ReverendBeastly has good people working on this but if I could help get this done faster I would be glad to help.

In the mean time I wish everyone involved with this project the best of luck in getting it completed. I know all to well how much a pain in the ass putting a DVD together can be.

Oh and don't forget to go and check out my squished laserdisc cover I made for this project.

I don't think Warners has really used DVD-18s since they started doing 2-Disc Special Editions. Universal is a studio that seems to pride itself on squeezing as much content on a single disc as possible. Up until a year or two ago, multi disc sets were fairly rare from them. They've been using DVD-18s recently for their television releases and on such titles as Schindler's List and the Casino SE. Double sided discs themselves aren't uncommon. DVD-14s have been commonly used by Fox and MGM.

If you're concerned with the DVD-18 burn a backup to two DVD-9's.
Just be thankful if we get what this looks like it's going to be.

The DVD-18 thing actually didn't occur to me until after I posted that message last night and makes some sense. The upcoming 10th anniversary DVD of Mallrats (also Universal) is a single, two-sided DVD.

So I guess we should just try to get this done as quickly as possible. Right now, this is up to Karyudo and MeBeJedi. Kary, any updates?

Sounds good.

As far as I'm concerned, this project is going ahead as planned. We'll see where it takes us and leaves us.

I try not to use too much profanity when posting, but HOLY FUCK is the Search function on this board the absolute shits.

I'm looking for a post by someone else who has capped AC-3 (from LD, I think) and who wrote himself up a little applet to check the integrity of the bitstream. MeBeJedi and I also posted in this thread, very close to where this guy made his post. I even tried Google -- using 'site:http://www.originaltrilogy.com/forum/ (ac3 OR ac-3)' but no luck.

I'd like to be able to get my hands on said applet, to be able to confirm that what I cap from The Frighteners is bit-perfect. I had trouble with the last side of the Jedi SE LDs -- on two different sets -- and this guy said he didn't. Coulda been my player (I've got a different one now, so maybe I'm OK?), but I'd still like to be sure.

Can anyone point out the thread and post where this was discussed, please??

Well, that was easy. Too easy. After setting up my player and messing around with cables in behind furniture, etc., it only took a few minutes to make a sample cap, and convert it. Want a listen? Download a little sample: http://www3.telus.net/11811/forums/Frighteners101.ac3. It's about 1.3MB, and coming from my personal webspace. Which means it won't be up that long. Just long enough for RevB and various other parties to grab it, and verify it's good for authoring, etc.

To play it, just drop it on VLC, or MediaPlayerClassic. Both handled it, no problems.

If it's good, I'll go ahead and do the whole film.

Man that sounds fantastic. The clarity, the depth of the timbre, the punch in the bass and headroom to burn!

Double thumbs up from me. bd

Wow. First side is 59:25. Isn't that a bit long? Guess I'm used to the short sides of SW. Anyway, the first side of the first disc is done. 165MB, or thereabouts. More tomorrow, I guess...

I too am excited that the project is moving forward. I love The Frighteners, and own a decent LD transfer from an ebay purchase. And I would still be interested in the new attempt. We still don't know the full specs of the new release, and I wouldn't be surprised if there was something left out (or, *added*). Besides, you can't trust any "official" release-- just ask Lucasfilm. How many botched DVD releases have there been? Some are quality control issues, i.e. the Back to the Future II & III misframed transfer mishap. Others are missing features that fans know should be included. And others are prints/cuts/versions that are inexplicably absent from release or absurdly altered. When a an old VHS release is complete, or has a better transfer or something, you wonder "Why they'd bother with the DVD anyway?" Sometimes it's almost a curse to be a devoted fan, or somewhat "in the know"-- ignorance truly is sometimes bliss. Fan Preservation is practically a must with certain films.

And on a side rant: why even bother releasing pan & scan garbage on DVD anymore? Consumers will get used to widescreen and get over it. Flat screen TV prices are coming down, the DVD successfully overtook the videocassette-- fullscreen is dead and should be pronounced as such, with toe-tag attached. And doesn't it cost more, and require more work to chop up movies for home video? Two totally awful pan & scan videos I remember watching are The Fan (the DeNiro flick), and Multiplicity-- which *needs* to be widescreen anyway, esp. with all the shots of multiple Michael Keatons. There was intrusive, bad panning throughout those movies. Ugh. Not to mention the whole "changing the director's vision" issue by literally changing the framing of shots that way.

I've been reading this otherwise cool board for awhile now, just now joining the ranks, and I agree.

However, I think I've discovered why Search is the shits. I don't know if anyone else noticed this: I searched for "frighteners" to get to this thread with no problem, so I assumed the search function worked fine-- this thread, and the other one mentioning Frighteners in the title showed up.

Then I searched for "Godfather" and nothing came up. "WTF?" I naturally wondered, because The Godfather was clearly mentioned in a thread, and spelled correctly, too. Then I theorized that maybe the search function only finds threads with the search words *in the thread title*. Sure enough, I tried "songs of the south" (which is misspelled within the thread title), and that thread came up in the search.

I don't know how useful this find is, but it helps to understand why the search function is limited.
We don't have enough road to get up to 88.

As far as I can tell the search on this site only searches by subject line well. After that we're screwed.

My brief progress report:

- all three sides of the film capped as DD-WAV and converted to AC-3
- no errors were reported in the conversion—yee-haw
- the doc isn't in AC-3, so I haven't capped it
- have yet to do some scans (I let my parents borrow my scanner for some eBay stuff...)
- everything should easily fit on a DVD-R

THIS PROJECT MAY NOT BE DEAD YET!

It says sound in 5.1 remix
but no where it says 2.0 as on the laser disc
now you could take the new release and re-release it with a 2.0 dolby option? HMMMMM!!

Remember, Highlander, you’ve both still got your full measure of life. Use it well, and your future will be glorious.
