Nolan will scan directly from the photochemically timed Interpositive. There will be no Digital grading from the negative scan. As a result we will get the truest representation of the theatrical colour timing of the 35mm and 70mm prints (IMAX included). I’ll try and buy the UHD set when it becomes available.

That being said, I am very much interested in This OT project. He has done a lot of work before the 4K news was announced. So we should stick with him.

What I am more interested in however, is the eventual 4K disc of ‘Interstellar.’

Also, Nolan should consider releasing all the 1.43:1 shots uncropped on the discs, as special bonus features; separate from the movie. The IMAX shots deserve to be seen in their full glory.

I highly trust Nolan to do an excellent job with the full 4K resotration. Also gonna get the eventual UHD boxset of The Dark Knight Trilogy, which will obviously have the remastered BDs included.
This project is officially dead in the water now since it’s using the original released Blu-ray disc. Good effort while it still lasted.

@RayRogers, there was no need to discourage someone who is investing their time and effort in doing something they love. Not everybody has the money to buy expensive 4K equipment or discs. Don’t mind but please try not to say “officially dead in the water” to someone else’s project, when he/she hasn’t even announced what they intend to do with it (cancel or continue). Kindly do consider.

Source on that? It would be awesome.

I did watch the video before, and seeing it again, he certainly seems to imply that he’s use the timed film sources. Thanks.

I’ve been busy lately so sorry I haven’t been on the board in a while. Good news, I’ve finished the first pass of the film as it is up now. Bad news, I leave for university in less a week where the wireless situation is complicated.

A few things about the release: 1) Everything except the opening right is matched to the screener. That means there are still some slight sifts in color as well and contrast issues. I will look into using other sources to correct the screener as it’s the only source that contains a reference for the whole movie. 2) Because I leave so soon I’m afraid that I won’t be able to put out an IMAX release until Winter.

Last of all, in regards to the new blu-ray edition that is coming out, I can’t wait. I eagerly wait for there arrival and for this project to become obsolete. I hope they will be ready by next summer for the 10th anniversary of the film, but who knows. However, until then, I will keep working to make this project better. When the new edition does arrive, if they do not contain the full IMAX scenes, there’s a good chance I will match those and release an IMAX version.

While this project, in my opinion, still has a lot of work to be done, I honestly believe that it is becoming the best way to watch this movie at home. This all would not have possible without all of your support, help, and critiques. Thank you all, and I sincerely hope you enjoy the first release.

I doubt they’ll include the 1.43:1 shots in the 4K discs. In any case, your work is very much appreciated as I’ve said before. Looking forward to the common width 1.43:1 to 2.39:1 version someday. Good luck for your University days!

So stretch009 posted a 2.40:1 version of this on MySpleen. I asked this in a comment there, but figured I might get an answer here more quickly:

Does cropping the IMAX stuff to 2.40:1 require reframing differently for each shot (to conform it to the 2.40:1 DVD, which I presume is the same framing as the theatrical 2.40:1 was), or is it just a straight crop on top and bottom throughout? And does anyone know which of the two stretch009 did for his constant-height release on MySpleen?

For the IMAX scenes each shots needs to be reframed to be line with the DVD. There is also one shot at the end of the movie where Alfred burn the letter that is different for the 35mm. I haven’t been able to check out stretch009’s version yet so I can’t tell you which he used.

TDK UHD was released a couple of days ago. I do not have a 4K Blu-Ray drive and I’m not even sure my motherboard would support the protection on the disks.

However, I have heard the following about the new transfer. 1) The color timing appears to be much more closely in line with theatrical prints. I’ve also found a few screenshots which look nothing like the BD version. 2) Edge Enhancement is not apparent if not non-existent in this relates. 3) Finally the bad news: The 1080p BD included is still the same the disk.

It looks unlikely that WB will release a proper 1080p now. That being said, when the day comes I shell out for 4K, I’d still like to insert the full IMAX shots in the film composited with the 4K version. It may not be possible given some scenes are only on the DVD, but I’ll still give it a go.

I did a bit of reading and found that he included the original theatrical audio in DTS HD… Pretty damn cool!

The U.S iTunes 1080p version uses the new master.

Interesting that Nolan himself is instigated in the production of this remaster. Maybe we’ll see a theatrically faithful version yet?

Well unfortunately, Nolan can hold up as a prime example that the involvement of a director is no guarantor that a remaster turns out to be better:

With Memento, we yet again had a master with the contrast boosted (which seems to be a spreading decease these days just like the loudness war with audio) and lower resolution black and white scenes.

The 10th Anniversary Edition of ‘Memento’ looks fantastic! About on par with how a 35mm projected print looks like, with boosted contrast (acquired from the stages of printing - ON-IP-IN-Release print) The original Blu-ray looks horribly dull and flat. Movies projected on film do not look so dull and lifeless.

As for the Nolan films on UHD, all the IMAX scenes have been even more cropped than on the BD, on all four sides. Though the colour grading is now closer to the prints, there are many instances where there is too much artificial grain removal resulting in a smearing mess of images. The 2.39:1 framing is also slightly different now. I’d stick to the BDs for the 2.39:1 scenes and just use the UHD as a colour reference.

As I apparently got it pretty wrong when it comes to my recent rant about the Starship Troopers UHD (HDR->SDR issue though), just in case a disclaimer right away - all what I’m writing now is assuming the screenshots at caps-a-holic represent the final look and are not a result of yet another tone mapping or some other flawed conversion process:

Well obviously it appears to be a matter of taste after all but I wouldn’t call clipped highlights and boosted contrasts to ‘look fantastic’. Might be in the minority apparently as the new disc got decent ratings overall.

How about the filtered black and white - scenes which look way less ‘film like’ than on the original release thanks to the lack of grain and spatial resolution?

Well, at least the contrast could still be boosted during playback of the original master whereas you won’t be able to recover the highlights on the boosted remaster. Since the details originally have been there, they obviously are part of what was captured at the set and hence should be there - whether the overall look is too dull for someone’s personal taste or not.
