Info: Star Wars Superclass ISD - Executor Set, anyone done a preservation?

I was going through some boxes in the garage and I found my ISD Superclass set along with the Star Wars Trilogy Widescreen (LONG) Box set.

Has anyone ever did a transfer of this set? The ISD is a beautiful VHS set.

I remember when I bought it back in late 1999 or early 2000. I paid something like 150 US dollars. And now it sits and collects dust, has a great booklet.

I did a quick and dirty VHS to DVD recorder transfer of my (£1.50 off Ebay in 2005!!!!!) Executor Box Set so that I would not need to play the tapes again.

Nothing special but it was handy when I got a request for a handful of comparison shots of all the PAL tapes I have got.

However, the GOUT DVD for all its faults is better than any VHS transfer in my opinion.....

The content on the tapes is just the '95 THX VHS that was in all the other releases as far as I know, but what we should preserve is the packaging - high res-scans of everything from the boxes, the booklets, the cards and the cassette stickers. That would be a worthy preservation of this set. I think it is the coolest home video release of Star Wars EVER!

Here's a nice overview:

The extras could be used to cover the japanese subtitles of the same material from the NTSC japanese laserdiscs... a subtitle-free four documentaries with superior video quality than VHS will be a great addition to any collection!

AFAIK, "From Star Wars to Jedi" isn't there; don't remember about the other three....

The other three are, but "From SW to Jedi" is in fact missing.

Wasn't one of the officially released edited differently?

I am US based and don't have my old region free VHS deck anymore. But from what I can remember ( and I do have the 1995 THX Box set in widescreen) that it was of higher quality, If anyone is interested in doing a transfer let me know. It should be preserved as is.

I have the set, but don't have a "proper" VCR. I transfered the first tape on my ~20 year old VCR but I was shocked how horribly it looks

I live in Italy, and have a PAL S-VHS deck with low usage (few hundred hours); I'm ready to capture it - if it's a PAL VHS tape, of course...

I live in the US and have a wonderful Panasonic AG-1980.  As for a capture card I'd like some input on what would work best for the set.  If I can get the right piece I'd be happy to do the initial capture.

Pretty sure "Executor" is a UK box, and therefore PAL...

Yes, it was a UK-only set (America had a similar LD set that year - the "definitive" collection).

So are you people interested in it? Maybe I could send my tapes to Andrea (Slovakia is closer to  Italy than UK)

pittrek, shipping cost to Italy or UK should be roughly the same; the most important thing is who has the best hardware for capture... mine is as following:

  • Panasonic NV-FS88 - S-VHS HiFi stereo
  • Sony MDJ-520 - Minidisc recorder with Sigma/Delta 20bit ADC
  • AverMedia BDA A16C - PCI capture card, with Philips SAA-713X chipset
  • Panasonic DMR-ES50, Pioneer DVR-320S, Yukai A100D - DVD recorders
  • Monster Cable video cables
  • Sony high quality digital optical cable

the video path will be S-VHS recorder - DVD recorder (needed for stabilizing picture via TBC) - capture card

the audio path will be S-VHS recorder - MiniDisc recorder (for its superior ADC) - sound card via optical in

the only missing thing is a really good 3D comb player inside those devices, but AFAIK there is no PAL 3D comb player around, or at least I'm not aware of any.

the "From Star Wars to Jedi" needed pieces could be used together with the captures from the japanese lasedisc, or, better, from the "pyramid" PAL french laserdisc.

I will mail my set to anyone who will take this seriously.

Also, my VHS's have not been played

EVER

In that case they will probably be a better source than my set, which I bought on eBay. My tapes were played unknown number of times

I pre-ordered mine back in the day.

I remember when I had just split up with my ex and had moved into a house without a stick of furniture watching ESB from the set on a LCD Gamecube screen sitting on a garden chair with the Gamecube on another garden chair.

I captured my set on my Panasonic SVHS deck last year, and I have a feeling that all of the 'special features' have blended frames from the conversion to PAL from NTSC (with the original duration being preserved), so its not just a PAL speed-up as is the case with the films on these tapes. I'll have to check to be certain, but I'm pretty sure that's how it is.

Well, even if it has blended frames, it could be good enough to "cover" the few french subtitles - at the contrary, the japanese version has a LOT of subtitles, and they are bigger than the french counterpart...

I never realised there was a French version! If it has the same treatment as the UK tape then it'll be really easy; at least for you, Andrea, your skills in layering multiple sources are well established!

Does the French version have blended frames too, or is it a standard PAL speed-up?

Once I tried to align both the PAL french and NTSC japanese laserdisc captures, without success... don't know why, I quit after some days of trying - it was enough for me, at least at the time! (^^,)

So maybe the french has the same treatment of the UK tape - and it will be a good thing, as it will be easy to overlay them - or I didn't take in account the fact that the japanese has mixed content (progressive and interlaced)...

By the way, the french version of "From Star Wars to Jedi" is "Les Coulisses D'une Légende", and could be found on the so-called "pyramid" set.

I was serious but since my machine won't play them I would not be able to do them.  My apologies.

Never understood why the UK only got the VHS set and not the laserdisc masters that france and germany got.
