I'm glad to have the Star Wars transfer. I've got to learn more about this but even a washed out, undetailed print has elements which are pleasingly life-like to the eye, which some types of filtering seem to suck out.

Better than I remember how my copies of SW and ESB looked. Some discs I picked up in thrift stores in the early 90's could be really worn out.
Did any of these have the RCA videodisc logo at the beginning?
Where were you in '77?

good observation.
yeah some parts look better
than recent versions.
if you want a slightly better looking
version with less glitches, i have the
fullscreen pan and scan laserdisc versions
tranferred also.

Looking at the Tantive Orange Errors Comparisons page the frame that really stood out to me as having the lifelikeness and greater depth of field was from the 1992 FS Dark Jedi Preservation, despite the blur/distortion.
I would love to see even just a clip of this just for comparison if this is still in existence. (Or any transfer that has comparable lifelikeness/d.o.f.)
I don't know whether its due to an effect of my own short sightedness or the amount of detail an individual's eyes is able to process (which must be finite) but my sense is that too much or too little information/distortion either way in a picture can interfere with the brains suspension of disbelief.
Even with a washed out transfer it can still suggest a real object to the brain, like say a watercolour painting can, but go too far the other way with amplified colour its initially powerful but the brain can't dial it back enough to make what its seeing become naturalistic (if thats what you want to do with the picture).
The trouble I guess is this is entirely subjective experience though and what the brain filters differently

However, in practice you must take into account the “fuckwit factor”. Just talk to Darth Mallwalker…

thanks !
Thanks for pointing me to this Darth Mallwalker - I finally got onto Usenet to get this 92 FS today.
I feel stupid for praising this pan and scan version but I think it manages to really retain the
life-like effect of a film print. And the colours although washed out, are still real-seeming.
I think I've got to watch some more widescreen versions on a bigger monitor, because I think I
must not be seeing the whole field of whats out there - But so far this is the preservation thats
really surprised me.
If negative1 posts his better pan and scan version in due course it will be good to get to compare them.
i have my laserdiscs back now,
and will post information about them
shortly here:

thanks to none,
the OT trilogy preservation on CED
is now on alt.binaries.starwars
for those that use newsgroups..
if someone wants to put them
up on myspleen and demonoid,
that would cover the torrent sites.

CED lives. Or it might be soon. Details forthcoming.
Team Negative1
Rarer than the laserdisc versions, all these CED captures by our founding member are now up on Myspleen.
Continuing the Lo-fi releases of the original trilogy.
Team Negative1
This SW version is dated 1982, right? I can't believe the Death Star's walls are already grey instead of teal. What about ESB? Is the bacta tank's scene already different from its theatrical version? I don't get why they made so many changes.
