You really didn't like that line? I was just going through a bunch of Star Wars "transfers" I have and found that the 3PO line appears in the SE and ESE (Extra Special Edition) as well as the '89 and '92 LD re-release. I watched and re-watched this scene with and without that line and I thought the scene just seemed odd without it.

In the versions that do not include the 3PO line the camera pans from the computer to Luke, Han, Ben and R2 and everyone just has this bored look on their face... kind of awkward. In the versions that include 3PO's line the camera still pans to a bored looking Han and Luke but the audio snippet of 3PO relaying the information R2 has found out about how to deactivate the tractor beam just fills in the awkward space and makes sense.

Maybe we should take a poll.... is this scene worth reviving for the OOT? Keep in mind this sound byte was added before the Special Editions but no, it was not in the original '77 release.

As for the snowspeeder sound byte... can someone refresh my memory on that one?

Most definitely, that site is getting bookmarked now

The Davis site has some good info but the Blam site has great cover scans as well as awesome breakdowns of the exact specs of the discs (every detail).

The line can help a little, but R2 does make the location appear up on the monitor. I believe Obi-Wan just uses that as his guide towards the tractor beam control.

It's a tough call. I could take or leave the line though. Definitinely have to have Chewie scaring the little Death Star Droid away though. Neither that nor the 3PO line were in the original opening day version.

Thanks for that other link to the releases. I had the Davis DVD one.

If anyone has the files for the laserdisc to dvd transfer of the original trilogy, maybe we could work out a trade.

Yes, I am aware that they are '89 releases, most of the LDs out there are actually the '92 re-release by FOX. So that's why I said I watched the '92 release...

Anyway, no, i dont like the 3PO line. The line itself makes sense, but the sound of the line, the delivery of the line, doesnt fit with the scene. My point is that it SOUNDS out of place, not that the line itself is out of place. It just sounds a little off. But like I said before, it really makes no difference whether or not the line is there or not. I say if the line was in the original theatre presentation, by all means use it.

A quick question for an expert: Do all three '89 movies have the infamous shrinking ratio problem or is just ANH? The reason I ask is b/c the Empire LD i got (which i havent watched yet) is the '89, but the LD have what apears to be a 1993 date on them somewhere...thanks.

Thank the makers !

And by that I mean MeBeJedi and zion ... and Laserman making his own set too ?

This is like Christmas time for us Star Wars geeks! I must say the latest screen shots of both versions look just absolutely *fantastic* I can't wait to see, hear, experience the final results!

I have one wish, though, and I do hope that you take it into serious consideration:

The DVD-Rs you are making really should be made dual-layer.

I mean, you have put an enormous amount of time and sweat into these projects ... and dual-layer DVD-Rs are just a couple of months off. Making a single-layer DVD-R version now would really make you feel bad after a few months when dual-layers are everywhere and you keep asking yourself: "Why, oh why didn't I take advantage of the extra 4+ gigs when I could have... ?" --- What you are creating is invaluable for us "original" Star Wars fans and I do think it deserves the most perfect treatment it can (dual-layer format).

I have understood that most standalone DVD players do not like the DVD+R format (they prefer DVD-R). Well, DVD+R9 is the only dual-layer format available so far, and most players do not play it. However, there is a way to burn onto DVD+R9 and "bit set" (or something?) the disc so that it really "looks" like a DVD-R (or DVD-ROM?) to the standalone DVD player so it plays fine. DVD-R version of the dual layer format should be here soon enough though Please correct me if I'm wrong but this is how I've understood things.

Anyway, your work is greatly appreciated and I wish you the best of luck in the quest of making a perfect original edition set of this gem of a movie saga

Bottom line: dual layer times are so near it would be too near-sighted to make single-layer versions now.

Why should it? It's not an official part of the DVD specification, is it?

I don't think that's what he's referring to. Perhaps he means that DL versions of the bootlegs will soon be available, and to answer that question, some versions already are.

Hey guys!!!

Rikter here -

I just wanted you guys to know that I've been realy busy with work and Rayna's been super busy with school - I've gotten baclk to most of your emails and I will be getting to PM's tonight so please don't FRET!

I will also be shipping out on tuesday and on thursday so if anyone has request they will be out FOR sure on time as I told you in your emails

I've also got some GREAT NEWS!

I have a new set that I will be uploading via the Bittorrents - I'm still waiting for the MAgnoliaFan Episode 2 - The Clone War si that will be at least anothr 2-3 weeks form now

BUT

I have just recieved this new version called the ISOMIX trilogy!!!!

I've watched ANH and will be posting them sometime next week!!

But here's the ROUGH low-down..........

Encoding info:

STAR WARS and EMPIRE were encoded with a 2-pass VBR of 3.8 minimum and 8 maximum using Compressor with Final Cut Pro. The ac3 tracks were encoded with a bit rate of 448 kbps with dialogue normalization at -27
DBFS. Due to the longer length of Jedi, it was encoded at 3.7 min, 8 max and the music only track was encoded at 384 kbps.

TECHNICAL INFORMATION ABOUT THESE DISCS

These DVD's were created from the Definitive Edition Laserdisc Box Set. Some small portions (like Leia's welding scene in EMPIRE) were taken from the "Faces" set. The spelling errors in the subtitles for RETURN
OF THE JEDI have been corrected. It was digitized via S-video and edited with Final Cut Pro. The audio was transferred via a digital coaxial connection to Pro Tools and converted to ac3. The music tracks
come from the RCA/Victor Special Edition soundtracks, except for some tracks that were only available on the 4-disc Fox Scores/Arista Box set.

The "Music Only" track for STAR WARS contains every cue used in the movie, plus an unused cue in the Trash Compactor scene.

THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK has an alternate cue in the scene where Yoda invites Luke to his home to eat. The only noticeable difference is at the very end of the cue as it cuts to Han and '3PO on the Falcon.

RETURN OF THE JEDI is missing the most cues; mostly source music. The music played after Chewie is taken prisoner and all the source music from Jabba's sail barge has never been released. "Lapti Nek" is a
different version than used in the film, and has been edited to sound more like the film version. There's also a few seconds in the scene where the AT-ST is smashed by two swinging logs that cannot be found on
the released soundtrack CD's. For this one portion, alternate music is used.

All the music tracks have been edited to match the original soundtrack as closely as possible.

MORE details LATER!!!

BTW- THIS set IS NOT FOR SALE - ONLY for download (for now.. MAYBE trades soon )

Word to the Spookies...

Sounds good! How's the picture quality compared to the other versions available?

DVD-R DL has been approved for the DVD Forum and should be out in a few months. I just don't know how good it will be since it will be something new. This link mentions that the Forum has approved DVD-R DL as well as other news such as the new logo for HD-DVD.

"How's the picture quality compared to the other versions available?"

Well, assuming the other transfer is similar to mine, bit rates of 3.8 and 8 are going to look pretty good. I'm currently using 2.7 and 7. That being said, I'm expecting delivery of a better encoder with 9-pass encoding. That is going to ROCK!

"DVD-R DL has been approved for the DVD Forum and should be out in a few months."

Okay, now I get what you are talking about. I forgot that the -R camp was late getting their product out.

That being said, I've heard here and there that the Sony DL burner has an excellent level of compatibility with current DVD players. Anyone know of a site that discusses this in more detail?

That's what I meant, yes.

So, I hope you "makers" favour the dual layer format

Oh, I have a bootleg question, I'd be glad if someone helped me out...

I have the Farsight set (Farsight uploaded them to myspleen) - is this the same thing as the DrGonzo set ? Or is the DrGonzo set something else ?

Anyway, regarding the Farsight set --- I can't seem to get neither Empire Strikes Back nor Return of the Jedi to play on standalone DVD players. I tried three different players but they just won't play, they try to start but stop right there. I guess the files that the DVD player first loads aren't "linked" properly to the .VOBs (or something ...?) Media Player Classic plays the whole movies fine if I open the .ifo file with it. But I'd like to get these to work on standalone players, too.

How do I fix this ?

A New Hope plays fine.

This is how I've burned them:

- Open Nero and select new dvd-video.
- Copy all the torrented files (.bups, .ifos, and .vobs) to the VIDEO_TS directory and burn.

Is this how it should be done ? I've never had this kinda problems before... this method worked with A New Hope and all of the TR47 discs. The only ones that do not play are the Farsight versions of RotJ and ESB.

I posted this plea for help on myspleen too, but I don't think there's much people reading the comments...

Any advice would be welcome

If this worked for all the other DVDs, then these two must just be bad burns. Look for any scratches or such. You might want to try reburning them, and seeing if the problem continues.

I know that when I use Nero, it will give a warning if it detects something wrong with the files (to the extent that it can determine if something's wrong.) Interestingly enough, I burned a DVD with a Video_TS directory (just to hold the DVD files - it wasn't mastered as an actual DVD) When I place it in my computer, it started playing automatically. When I put it in my DVD player, it wouldn't load. Weird.

Well, I've burned the Farsight ESB and RotJ twice now ... no luck on standalone players

I'm sure there's something wrong with the mastering files (the .ifo/.bup/whatever files that get loaded first).

Can someone confirm that the Farsight ESB and RotJ *can* be burned onto DVD-R and played on a standalone player ?

MeBeJedi: I know your answer hinted at you have burned them successfully, I'd just like to know for sure. Computers can of course play whatever files you throw at it - provided the necessary codecs are installed. But standalones are picky and want the .bup/.ifo stuff to be just perfect in order to load...

Also: Is the Farsight set actually the DrGonzo set ?

Thanks for the help

If you use Nero to burn a DVD-R or DVD+R for standalone DVD-players, make sure to use "DVD-ROM (UDF/ISO)", click the UDF tab and tick the box "Force DVD compatibility mode". That way you can be sure that it works on the widest variety of standalone players (of course you still require file-types that the player is able to decode).

No they are TWO different sets

The FARSIGHT Edition -

Major differences in this version compared to others are Anamorphic video, ac3 sound, improved video bitrate, and an extremely high amount of care taken to ensure that the result is as good as possible given the source (an old film print on analog medium).
