MF.com thread on Magnolia’s edits

What is the deal with all the haters. I thought MF.com was different and not like the brainwashed gushers over on TFN. I mean the hate in this thread for the work Magnolia did is rediculous. The stupidest part is every going on and on about it being wrong and illegal. Like everyone here hasn’t seen the movie in the theater, own the official copy on DVD and probably given Lucas a great deal of our money in our lifetime. Why is watching a fan edit, so evil? This seems like the only web site where this is not villianized and actually appreciated. Most of us here love Lucas’ work as a whole, but nearly no one here doesn’t see it as flawed. Why do people have to be such haters, I don’t get it. If it isn’t your thing, if you don’t agree with it, why post or peruse or whatever.

The greatest irony is the homepage of MF is the rips of ROTS available, WTF???

16 years I wait and this is what I get???

Bashing the MagFan Edits seemed to be a favourite pastime of a few certain people at the MF.com - not only in that thread - some of people slating had not even seen them.

Classic arguements like 'I don't have to see them to know they're shite/ what they're about' etc and go on a long pointless tirade about them.

Just learn to ignore them.

d00d! To each their own, right! I personally think the MagFan Edits are pretty good, nothing in the range of being GODLIKE, but good. Like MagFan said, this is merely another view, and the people at MF just dont like his view as they don't Lucas'. As for ROTS being on their homepage, who cares! They bash something though they have something that is greater to be bashed at!! It's just one big paradox
Just don't worry about it, I know, I saw the page, damn, really harsh on the edits. I felt sad that they made fun of MagFan for apperently having too much time on their hands, whilst, hey guess what, your on a forum making fun of someone while you should be looking at yourself at what you are doing! LOL! This turned out to be a rant so, apologies to the people at MF.

I had to chuckle when some of them threatened to contact LFL and report MagnoliaFan.

Little do they know that MagFan has close ties with Lucasfilm...

Well done. I will disengage self-destruct initiative.

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing when I read that and thought it was really funny with their threats of lawsuits. After all, Lucas thought it was a good idea.

Not that that is going to stop you from dreaming… Only in this case, Gaffer is actually a guy.

second can i dl these some where the torrent site you gave doesnt work. alsoi do not have atorrent client.

third alot of those guys near the begining itterated so many feelings i habe about why some OT fans didnt like the PT. the PT didnt fit there image and so they were mad and bashed lucas for making shitty shitty movies. any fan who seriously thought that ROTS had no good things in it, just proves my point. yes that movie had bad parts but as one reveiwer said for every thing that could have been flat, there was something else that was just fantastic.

Me too, especially since MF is *the* best place to find information about illegal downloads. DarthPsychotic is an excellent source for such material.

Besides, most of us already own AotC and TMP on DVD or VHS, so it's not like we're getting the flick for free with Magfan's edits.

Anywho, it IS beyond hypocrytical for them to dis MagFan if their site has links to actual illiegal downloads of Episode III. It is also unfortunate that both MagnoliaFan and Millienium Falcon have the initials MF... but that's a topic for another thread.

Yeah, both George and Rick got a kick out of it.
Remember, a good chunk of the original Star Wars was born through George's re-editing of old war films to use as an animatic. He was doing re-edits before it was trendy.
As far as I know, they've seen "Balance of the Force" and "The Phantom Edit".
It's been mentioned in an interview or two with Rick and once in a statement by a LFL rep.
I think they liked it because it made such a drastically different film out of the same source material, coming off much less like an edit than a totally different film.
Also it introduces a lot of subplots and story elements that George dropped in early script stages, which kind of gives an interesting window into what could have been.

In the issue of Empire Magazine with Vader on the cover, on pg 77 is the following quote:

"We love then all," says Rick McCallum when quizzed about the plethora of Star Wars parodies out there. "Spaced is great, I really liked the French and Saunders send-up. I even loved the re-edited version of Episode I - even when someone hates something so much, when they spend so much time and effort hating it, you've got to give them a hand"

I am waiting to download Magfan's edits. Though I have not seen his edit, I must say that these people are too harsh. So what? Someone wants to make a film better. What is wrong with that? In my oppinion, nothing.

Whoa HOO. Wait a minute. Where's the post upon post of scornful derision after that last quote? Where's someone saying "just learn to ignore that guy?" It sort of points to the idea that actual QUALITY of the edits sorta takes a backseat to the mental picture of some lowly guy "sticking it to the man" and "making a stand," and that the leeway some people wouldn't give to the movies themselves, they'll give to the edit because it's validating something a little extra important to them. Just like George and Rick probably got a "kick" out of the edits less for the quality of the edits and more because of the effort that went into them.

People there are overreacting with the "call LFL" thing, but then again, no one there is SELLING their shit, either. Which, if you take the time to read critically, is the major difference in their arguments. Yes, it's shades of grey in an endeavour that is sorta shady to begin with, but that's where the heart of the argument lies. And I can see a long and useless sidetrack into the ethics of downloading versus bootlegging and so on and so forth so save that, because it's pretty well assumed if you're coming here, and you own bittorrent, the morality leg is pretty shaky to stand on anyway, especially if you're going to argue that sharing torrent links to a blockbuster movie is worse than selling copies of a homebrewed edit for about 10 bucks profit . It's just going to be a morass of pointless nitpicking.

Or why spend months upon months re-editing EVERY single Star Wars movie to fit "Your vision" and then spread it all around the internet, like the guy spending all this time, energy and promotional effort trimming and cutting a finished piece of work getting to hang out with Lucas and McCallum. I wonder how strongly he voiced his opinion directly to them, or if he just emailed them a couple links to the threads where he derides and belittles their filmmaking and storytelling qualities in great detail. Now if he came back here and said he HAD done so, THEN I'd be like "oooh" and "aaaah." that's something I'd respect the hell out of. but hell, that Empire magazine quote is so generic, to say it's MagnoliaFan's edit he's talking about is iffy.

I know he hung out at the premiere and talked to them there, but that's all I know. Hell, if some nutbag fan told ME he was at home diligently re-editing movies to distribute to the 1/1000th of the fanbase geeky enough to seek out fanmade alternate edits of finished films, I'm sure I'd smile and nod and send them an appreciative word before I moved onto the next drink and next handshake, too. I mean, how close ARE his ties? Really? I don't think they're THAT close that Rick and George would just be like "ha hahaha so cute" and pat him on the head and then give him another check or something. Sure, I could be wrong, and I probably am, looking at how confidently he speaks on the matter, but I've been hosed on the internet before But even looking at the statements, they're just vague and wishy washy enough that it's left open to interpretation.

speaking of which:

Quote

As far as I know, they've seen "Balance of the Force" and "The Phantom Edit".
I think they liked it

or they could have been paying you lip service because you were nice to them when you met them. who knows.

Quote

Let's not spin it too harshly. Lucas didn't distribute his early student editing exercises, either. and his re-editing of war films as an animatic isn't "a re-edit" because he then went in and CREATED SOMETHING NEW out of those early guide tracks. There's a shared similarity, but it's not even close enough to claim its the same thing. I mean, honestly, can anyone here REALLY argue with this statement over at the MF thread we're all so busy burning in effigy?

Quote

As do so many of the "I could do it better" crowd, you completely miss the point.

It doesn't matter whether you say these are the only versions, the better versions, the more satisfying versions, blah blah blah. These aren't your films. You didn't write them, didn't cast them, didn't direct them, didn't produce them. Because YOU'RE happy with your fanboy edit doesn't mean that I'm any more interested in seeing them re-edited than I am in seeing a new fanboy edit of 2001, Jaws, Psycho, Godfather II or ANY other movie, for that matter.

It's nice to have hobbies. But if you're looking for a pat on the head for having them, you'll have to produce something original first.

Where's the argument there? What in that statement is out of place? For that statement is one of the issues at the heart of why people at that, and many other messageboards, dont' give MagFan any slack: He'd get a hell of a lot more respect if he did something CREATIVE and ORIGINAL with those talents an energies, instead of doing something DESTRUCTIVE and REPETITIVE.

Plus, a lot of people still have problems with the creative choices he made as far as storytelling goes, because most of it feels just as empty and hollow as people who didn't like the prequels thought the theatrical releases were. It's just empty and hollow in a different direction. It has the stink of poorly thought out "Fanboy cool" all over em.

But like McCallum said, you gotta give him a hand for being as dedicated as he is. But that's about all I'm giving him a hand for. I'm not saying that to be extra-snide or anything. I really do appreciate that he put that much effort into it. I'm just certain I'd appreciate it more if it was its own thing.

Actually, the thing that gets me is not post like that, but the utter childishness of posts that contain stuff like this.

that's a pretty apt analogy.

ps this shit is sad and retarded

Quote

I think what M Verta is doing is cool, Especially since he isn't selling or distributing it in anyway. But the shit this cum bubble is selling is faggotry, well ok the slave labor idea is good

[emphasis mine]

Describing it as "retarded" and "faggotry", and calling Magfan a "cum bubble"...wow, what a great and intelligent way to express your opinion.

It's one thing to say you don't agree with something, it's something else to outright flame, cuss, and bitch about something you don't care about.

I get the impression that MF is a VERY hostile board. I've brosed many of their other threads in the past. The level of disrespect most posters seem to show for one another is pretty messed up. I'm not going there anymore.

There's no harm in what MagFan has done. If he chooses to re-edit the films, it's his time. I would love to see a take on the prequels using completely new footage, story, etc. Not because I hated the films, simply to see an alternative version of the story.

Yes, I can argue with a point on that quote. Just because he doesn't want to see it, does that mean no-one should want to either? What's wrong with bringing it up. If you're not interested, read the next thread, if you are, cheack it out. Where's the harm in that. His point's are right, they aren't his films, but I don't recall Magfan ever claiming that they were.

I knew I should have had a bet on how long it took FatBoy to come on here with more presumptive spoutings. DOH!

I don't think Magnolia HATE the prequels - that's a pretty big jump there you made FatBoy - maybe he just thought they could do with editing here and there?

How easily forgotten that, IIRC, his Ep1 Edit was for a project as part of an editing class, and then gave them to friends and family - from which they spread out and started to appear at stalls at conventions, and so on, until it winded up on forums on the internet.

Has MagFan taken 'months and months' to do an edit? You make it sound like he's slaving away non-stop at his computer desperately trying to 'stick it to' GL and McCallum - no job, no family, no friends, no life - just hate... I had no idea that you know Magnolia's daily schedule.

As Magnolia states at the start of his Edits - it is just another point of view - a shame that people can't take it as just that.

And, as a part-time video editor myself, I will say if you don't have the 'bug' for editing than you can never really understand how addictive it is. Here I can understand GL, MagFan, etc's feelings- when an editor is given raw materials, no matter how crappy they may be (ie wedding footage, vacation footage, the PT films), you have a burning desire to play and tweak and design and redesign and so on and so on...

I have spent too many nights literally awake ALL NIGHT just working on a scene or two- much to my wife's chagrin.

I have friends who are the same way with video games, building models or many other hobby pursuits. Do they consume your life? No, not usually. Can you waste some of your time working on your hobbies? Sure. Does it hurt anyone? Nope.

Klingon_Jedi hit it on the head about this debate though- if you don't like what you're reading... STOP reading it! Turn the channel! That's one of the things that sets the OT.Com forums apart from so many others- as a whole people are civil and get along, or if they don't they just post where they can be constructive. I hope it stays that way.

Here's the problem with that though--if people followed that mindset--THIS PLACE WOULDN'T EXIST. If people didn't like what they were watching, they'd just STOP WATCHING IT. They wouldn't have gone to a laserdisc and figured out the best way to pull information off of it. They wouldn't have sat in front of a program and tinkered with the sound. They wouldn't have hunkered over photoshop and cloned every inch. None of that wouldn't have happened, because they would have just "STOPPED" once they deemed it unlikable enough that out of all the people in the world, THEY needed to change it.

There is no way ANYONE on this board really gets to say "If you don't like it, just don't pitch in" because this whole BOARD is about people who don't like things pitching in. There's no way around it. You can't have it both ways. Yes a lot of people here are civil, but they're civil because they're being just as hostile. Lemme explain: They're just being hostile to a set of people that don't post here, which makes any possible drama go WAY down. And every now and again you have your flare-ups, but for the most part, the reason you're all getting along is that the set of people you're tearing, mercilessly, limb from limb, are people who doesn't post here--and I'm NOT talking about people at other messageboards. This board isn't REALLY all that much better tempered than any other. It just feels that way
