And i thought that my death star cannon mockup was radical :P where luke supposed to see the battle?

The light direction is pain to be correct

It will be easier to be night rather sunset because of the nature of the set lighting and coloring.....

Sun has different light behavior.

Where palpatine will fall and why can die after we know that jedi can survive from great heights?(mace doesnt count.)

try different angles and perspectives to see if its possible.

Dont get me wrong. I like the mockup. Im trying to play devil's advocate here.

LoL - I have no clue about any of that....I just wanted to see what this would look like even though I'm not really for the idea. I kinda dig it visually though.

You are absolutely right about the technical aspects.

I'm trying it at night but it pretty much ends up looking like the original shot.

Those look pretty cool, although I can't see the second half of your first pic. It is cut off and now I'll have to wait until tommorow to see it on my computer. Now obviously between scenes there would need to be paning shots of Coruscant. That would make it feel more like they are there. I'm not that crazy about the idea, but I think it would be easy to do and take away some of the dull scenery in ROTJ.

You can see the full picture by right clicking on it.

Here's a rough and ready set of mockups to illustrate the basic mobile palace idea and for Coruscant fans the first two are in take off mode (I know the scale is all wrong but the idea being that the throne room is like the gondola of an airship).

The inverted Stargate ship is just a place holder for whatever design anyone would like to come up with.

It has a cyberpunk and a steampunk feel to it. Great mockup!!!

"The other versions will disappear. Even the 35 million tapes of Star Wars out there won’t last more than 30 or 40 years. A hundred years from now, the only version of the movie that anyone will remember will be the DVD version [of the Special Edition], and you’ll be able to project it on a 20’ by 40’ screen with perfect quality. I think it’s the director’s prerogative, not the studio’s to go back and reinvent a movie." - George Lucas

Cheers chaps, It's snowing rather heavy hear in Scotland BTW.

I thought I needed stronger dandruff shampoo ;-)

It would need someone to design and build a model but it proves the concept is sound and creates something different which serves the same purpose as Palpatine moving around in a regular shuttle.

It could have a flat stained glass dome on the top in the shape of the Imperial Insignia (adding a bit of Monroville styling to the mix).

Needs a mockup of what the Parade Deck/Main Hanger would look like with a giant elevator instead of a shuttle.

Maybe it could be sort of circular like the parade ground in AOTC.

I'm confused.  So right now we're talking about the Emperor arriving on Coruscant, then flying his palace to the DS2 in time to meet up with Luke and get blowed up?

What's wrong with the tower again?

There seem to be conflicting ideas between the some people suggesting that action move to Coruscant (something I don't think makes sense).

And a recent suggestion (derived largely from a misunderstood comment I made about on of Angel's mockups) of reviving the early draught idea of having Palpatine arrive on a space faring palace which docks with the Death Star.

As a compromise in my mockup I show the palace leaving Coruscant and then docking with the Death Star.

The tower now becomes a mooring pylon so when Luke goes up in the lift he goes into the gondola under the Palace (the Throne Room is connected to the palace not directly to the tower).

Rather than leave his palace he essentially takes his palace with him, the idea being that he no longer feels the need to mix it with normal people and just hangs out with his pasty faced goons who also die when the Death Star goes bang (making the Rebels victory even more decisive).

The take off (if needed) could happen straight after Vader announces the Emperor is on his way and the arrival would happen in the same place it does in the original version but instead of a normal shuttle the Palace would dock with the mooring pylon and Palpatine would come down in the elevator to inspect the troops and the station.

As I said the inverted Stargate ship is just a place holder for what ever design people want to come up with but an inverted pyramid looks weird enough to fit in with the wedges and angles associated with the Empire and is a structure that's utterly impossible in our world, even if it were to be fixed to the ground.

Having it float into the air and off into space just ramps up the oddness.

If anyone had any doubts about my earlier suggestion of having R2 hack into the Imperial Bunker computer and shoot down their own TIE Bombers it looks like something similar is very possible in the real world :

Bingo: how do you feel about the "giant imperial logo palace ship" thing?  That would at least allow for a similarly shaped ship that would correspond with the existing top of the tower in JEDI.

Here are some more sketches:

The need to show Coruscant is completely redundant, as we do not need to see the Emperor leave, only arrive.  One would need to replace the brief outside shot of the Emperor's shuttle, as well as change the Emperor's shuttle to an elevator IF THIS IS TO BE DONE.  I can also see the Emperor's shuttle being colored red (or some similar slight change) or his shuttle being replaced with a unique ship to keep changes to a minimum as well.

The above storyboard is a suggestion of what could be done visually
(ala a "2001"ish appearance, with the sun behind, making the ship somewhat silhoutteted by the sun):

(1) palace ship arrives - lowers down as pylon lifts up to meet
(2) as palace ship lowers almost to docking, pylon docking claws seperate and spread out to attach to underbelly
(3) palace docks
(4) outer palace ring lifts off, leaving the center section still attached, which resembles the current tower top design (but with six branches as opposed to 4).

It's a genuinely interesting design but it does make the throne room (unless I'm reading this wrong) still part of the Death Star and not part of the palace, which makes the palace idea somewhat redundant.

I'm beginning to see the virtue in seeing the palace lift off (something I previously didn't think at all necessary) because it creates a look who's coming to dinner feeling so when the palace ship arrives with all the pomp it makes a big event of the thing.

The lift off needn't be a long sequence, no more than a minute maybe even less, it could even replace Vader's walking away from Jerjerrod which never really impressed me cinematically. The last blast of the Imperial March could be taken up with the Palace rising out of the city scape and jumping into hyperspace.

A wheel also doesn't look very palatial on the outside and seeing as in your version the throne room isn't part of it (the whole thing is more a Royal Yacht than a palace going by the scale) we never see what it looks like on the inside either.

I'm all for putting a big Imperial seal on the top as some kind of decorative feature (an observation bubble in that shape would be cool) but your wheel design (great as it is) looks more like a space station than a floating building capable of space travel.

Maybe if you took the seal shape but gave it more variety in the third dimension so it looked more conical from the side on than disk-like and only resembled the seal from above or below that might work more.

Something like a spinning top or a Roulette wheel but not as flattened out as Cloud City and the throne room prongs could come out of the Palace and settle on the tower rather than the other way around.

As you present it it's a fine Royal Yacht design but if you are going with that approach you might as well have a fancier looking shuttle and keep things roughly the way they look now.

Bingo, I think you may be on to something here and I like the idea of the mobile palace, as long as it doesn't look to un-Star Wars related.

The question is what are you going to do with the shuttle landing sequence and the Vader-Palps conversation?  Will this palace attach somehow to the DS, or will it land in the hanger?

I think it would be cool to have that conversation over hologram, then when it is over, show Palps walking out of his Palace mysteriously (like at the end of ROTS on Polis Massa).  Mabey have it be storming?  Then show him dock the mobile Palace.

Mabey all the Coruscant business isn't needed, but I agree that if you would rather have the mobile palace, then showing where it came from would make alot of sense.

If you scroll up a bit I suggested that instead of a main hanger those scenes could take place on a parade deck (more like the parade areas of Kamino than a conventional hanger deck).

I'm thinking more circular than rectangular, it could still have a big curved window or hanger opening, that could allow for even more troops to be present than now (another possible place to put a giant representation of the Imperial Insignia the troops could all standing in formation in the shape of the symbol like in Nazi parades) the whole thing is put on as a show for the old geezer.

It would require a new matte with a central elevator coming from the mooring tower instead of the shuttle.

Star Wars has loads of hangers and two more in Jedi as it is.

To have Palpatine inspect his troops in a different kind of space would add further variety to a special edition.

Do you guys remember the speculation about how GL shot new scenes for the OT, while he was filming ROTS.  Does anyone think that he did?

Could these be out there?

We had the Halloween Mask hologram for ESB:SE:DVD, the ghost of Manikin Skywalker and the Gungan in a TPM flipshot in the celebrations.

I imagine the new Fett voice was recorded around then too.

I seriously doubt GL put anymore work into these films outside of what we last saw revised in 2004.

My guess is the most we'll see officially from LFL is the long overdue Saga blurays with a new CG Yoda for TPM (another change way overdue) and maybe a few fixes here and there. But nothing on the scale of what AdY is doing. And nothing close to the same level of love and care that the films deserve. Sadly we probably wont even see a restored OT.

Sorta back on topic....

All these pics of Coruscant has me wondering about possibly seeing Luke @ the very end of RoTJ in the Jedi Temple and then pulling away slowly. No idea how to pull something like this off though. Maybe just something simple like him looking out a window or something from within the temple. I'm thinking of something along the lines of paralleling Anakin quietly gazing outward in RoTS just before he made the decision to turn.

I guess re-using some footage from somewhere else in the movie is the only way possible.

I had suggested before that Luke was stood by the window of the council chamber (taken from the Bonfire scene from Ewok celebrations) the flames reflecting off his face could be explained as fireworks over the city. when he turns around we see ben sitting into his old chair (Bens hut scene from ANH) as he puts his hand to his chin who looks over at Yoda in his old chair..

there is more to it than that but it is doable IF you have the skills & the software to do it all in.
