Info: Fixing the TFA and TLJ Deleted Scenes

Alright guys, there’s gotta be someone out there brave enough to commit their precious time to making everyone else here happy. If anyone’s got the wherewithal to fix the technical issues in the TFA and TLJ, now’s your chance to speak up.

Issues in the various scenes -

  • All of the TFA scenes have timecode. I know some people have removed it in some spots. Be curious to get exact details of which scenes have gotten the removal treatment and where people can find them

  • The Unkar Plutt scene and the snow speeder chase have unfinished VFX which is almost certainly beyond the ability for fans to fix

  • I fear the same is the case for the preparing for lightspeed scene, though I am hoping I’m wrong about this

  • Would’ve thought that removing Carrie’s braid in her deleted scene was nearly impossible, but the Restructured edit proves it’s not

  • Telecine has apparently removed deleted scene time code, specifically the “Kylo Searches the Falcon.” Possibly also Sir Ridley.

  • Sir Ridley and Neverar also collabed on fixing/color grading the “Leia and the Resistance” deleted scene as well as a bit of the Jakku Message scene, but the dialogue was modified to serve the Restructured edit.

  • Many of the TLJ scenes seem to be beyond fixing (alternate opening, Paige’s gun jams, extended Fathier chase, the Phasma scene, and Rey and Chewie on the Falcon), but who knows, maybe there’s something to salvage

  • The jacket scene has a bit of rough compositing on Finn’s legs in the first shot

  • In the Rey hologram scene, BB-8 is missing his antennae in the first shot, and you can see the puppeteer arm in his last

  • Some rough compositing and backgrounds in the caretaker village plus unfinished Rey running effects (lightsaber too)

  • Various unfinished set extensions in the extended Supremacy incursion scene

  • Unfinished shot of Crait in the scene where Finn and Rose leave the Supremacy, plus tape and stuff below the window

  • Some unfinished shots from the Canto Bight b-roll

  • And also a lot of the music is temp or doesn’t flow into the following scenes, so I’m wondering how clean the center channel is on these

So what about it guys? What stuff can be fixed/already has been fixed?

I believe Telecine was the first to remove a deleted scene time code, specifically the ‘Kylo Searches the Falcon’ deleted scene. He did a pretty good job, and I believe Sir Ridley has mentioned having a go at it as well for his own edit (correct me if I’m wrong).

I think Sir Ridley and Neverar also collabed on fixing/color grading the ‘Leia and the Resistance’ deleted scene as well as a bit of the Jakku Message scene, but the dialogue was modified to serve the Restructured edit. That’s all of the TFA deleted scenes I believe.

I can’t personally speak on what is possible or impractical, but if you don’t mind me interjecting, I would also consider which of these scenes are really worth the trouble.

I definitely think Ridley having a go at the Kylo/Falcon scene would be a nice addition to the film and doable. And you pointed out some details with some of the TLJ deleted scenes that I hadn’t noticed. I think fixing little errors in the jacket scene, BB8 message scene, the caretaker village sequence, and certain moments of the Supremecy Incursion might be worth the trouble for some. I’m not sure many of the unfinished scenes would be worth the effort, but maybe shots could be scavenged from them.

Regardless, I really like the idea of making a database of usable deleted scenes overtime as people edit them.

That’s the idea.

I personally wouldn’t include most of these scenes, but I figure it’d be easier for people who wanted to to check the status here rather than sift through the various edit threads in hope someone else has done something (also reduce redundant work).

…oh, and if anyone has “Kylo Searches the Falcon” without the timecode, go ahead and slide right into my PMs, please and thanks.

Just to add to your list, I believe the exterior of the shuttle when Rose and Finn escape the supremacy is also unfinished. It’s not the most noticeable, but there’s tape and stuff below the cockpit window.

Here’s the final version of the Leia and Kor Sella scene for TFA: Restructured:

It was lengthened with additional dialogue and repeating part of a shot to make it function like a full scene.

You did a fantastic job on that!

I’ll include “Kylo searches the Falcon” in my edit, so eventually I’ll be able to share my version of that. Same thing with some of the TLJ scenes, but I’m focusing on TFA for now.

Were you ever able to fix this scene? This and Finn with the Villager are two scenes that I’ve been trying to remove the timecode from with no success.

You guys are in luck! Not sure if this has been uploaded in full quality yet, might be worth shooting them a PM.

Finn and the Villager Deleted Scene - No Timecode

It’s a simple scene that some might consider unnecessary, but I’ve always really liked it. I think it gives Finn’s decision not to kill the villagers a more personal touch.

I’ve always wanted a version of the Caretaker village scene where Rey isn’t running weird, I would put that scene back in a second. I have no idea how to fix that one though.

I’m kind of iffy about the Caretaker village scene. On the one hand, it’s good to actually get Luke’s third lesson that he talked about earlier, and it gives the Caretakers that were pointless in the original version an actual reason for existing.

But at the same time, it makes Luke feel like even more of a jerk than he did originally. He tells Rey that the big party going on is actually a pirate raid, claims that a true Jedi doesn’t help people in need (which is obviously wrong if you’ve even seen a Star Wars movie before), and acts like it was just a fun joke when Rey gets rightfully pissed about it. If that scene was in the actual movie, I feel like I would understand the complaints about Luke’s character much more.

Apparently him seeming like too much of a jerk is the main reason they removed the scene in the first place.

The reason I like it is because, “jerk” or not, it really solidifies what Luke believes and why he’s acting the way he is. It shows why he thinks the Jedi need to end in the clearest way: they can be manipulated by not understanding a cultural context into doing more harm than good.

Yoda was a “jerk” and constantly mocking Luke throughout Empire Strikes Back.

It was cut for time, as a lot of the ideas were already described elsewhere and it’s already the longest Star Wars film.

This. Exactly this. Well said.

It is my believe that the complaining people just do not get it, it seems they cannot deal with a deconstruction of a childhood hero. Including some of the film makers, considering we have the “a Jedi’s weapon deserves more respect” line in the final movie of the sequel trilogy. But let us not open this can of worms…

This scene should have been included.

For seventeen years the renegade Pfhor scoutship jumped between the closely packed stars of the galactic core. And all over the ship, dancing through the wreckage of the Pfhor computer core, Durandal was laughing…

I feel like you guys don’t understand: I like Luke in the original version. Aside from a few moments, like the saber chuck and the milking scene, I’m completely fine with the direction they took him. It isn’t what I would have done, but I’m fine with it. I just feel like the Caretaker scene takes his grumpiness and jerkiness a bit too far.

And yes, the reason why they cut it actually is because of Luke being too jerky. Time may have been a concern as well, but that was one of the primary motivations for cutting the scene.

All the Ahch-To scenes should be in because they improve Luke and Rey’s relation.

And to be honest, although I dislike TLJ I find Luke more in character on those scenes.
As others mentioned, he’s like Yoda at this point in life. Showing him like that connects to the OT and gives more weight to Yoda showing up later.

I really don’t get these comparisons to Yoda. He was reluctant to train Luke, sure, but I don’t remember the part in ESB where he said “Screw the Jedi, they don’t believe in helping innocent people anyways.” Instead, he pretty much said the exact opposite. I believe it’s much more compelling for Luke to hate the Jedi because of their past actions (what was implied in the theatrical cut), rather than from fundamentally misunderstanding their ideology (like he does in the deleted scene).

I just want to insert the Luke/Rey scenes back into the movie cause that was my favorite part and I would love if it was longer (also the saber twirl joke is underrated) I guess I understand why they removed it but I gotta get that Luke content

The movie’s already pretty long, so if you add even more Ach-To stuff, why not just center the whole movie on that, since it looks like it’s the only part anyone cares about, and cut the rest? Not something I’d do for a definitive cut, but it might make an interesting alternate cut.

Yeah, there have already been a few edits along those lines, placing the emphasis on Luke by cutting the mutiny subplot entirely. I don’t think anyone has done an edit removing the Resistance completely though, and I doubt the movie would make sense without at least a few of those scenes.

I was working on an edit of TLJ that was actually just the Poe/Finn subplots until Rey shows up at Crait with Luke. I’m probably going to revisit it eventually. Just for fun, not because it would make the movie better.

That actually sounds like a lot of fun. Like you say, not a better movie, but fun nonetheless. Reminds me of the Stranger Things film edits. For the second film the guy cut all of Eleven’s story up until she shows up to save the day at the end for time despite it being the best part for time reasons. He knew it was shame to lose, but felt he had to. Anyway, both cases cut the best plotline in exchange for a badass return of a hero, now better trained and ready to kick ass.
