At least these movies are still perfectly watchable in widescreen, though I'd prefer more picture any day.

They're watchable in widescreen because that's what open matte is all about.

The choice was made to shoot in 4:3, but construct each shot to fit within a 1.85:1 frame. This eliminates the need to pan&scan home releases, but still makes a widescreen theatrical release possible. It's genius.

I prefer to watch open matte movies in full frame because I prefer to watch movies on CRTs and most CRTs are 4:3.

In fact, I'm going to go watch Evil Dead II in full frame (open matte) right now!

A picture is worth a thousand words. Post 102 is worth more.

I’m late to the party, but I think this is the best song. Enjoy!

Any interest in this still?

BTTF is DNR-free on Shaw on Demand and I can record it over HDMI, but I'm not sure if it will be better or worse than the H264 Russian capture. This is just MPEG-2 source.

So, did you have the chance to capture it recently?

I need some tech support before I can.

The device I am using is the BlackMagic Design HyperDeck Shuttle 2. The damned 10-bit uncompressed QuickTime files won't play on Windows for me. Error message about a component missing.

No it isn't.

Haha. Maybe you can give us a link for a small .mov file so everybody that is interested could try to play it or even try to convert it.

It may be useful to determinate if it's the file itself who won't play or if you just need to install a codec.

What player are you using? The latest version of CCCP, mplayer, mplayer2 or even VLC might work? Though I kinda have the feeling that all you're lacking is just a certain codec. Like ilovewaterslides said, upload a short sample for us would help a lot.

VLC sort of works but plays insanely slowly.

BlackMagic support got back to me with instructions on how to download the codec by installing the drivers for a different device. Makes perfect sense.

Hi drngr, Apple has a free download on their website called "Apple ProRes QuickTime Decoder 1.0 for Windows." I found it at http://support.apple.com/downloads/Apple_ProRes_QuickTime_Decoder_1_0_for_Windows .

Have you tried that? I hope it helps. =D

No ProRes. Uncompressed.

Anyway, I discovered today that they removed the movies from On Demand. Don't know why.

It is airing on a channel called Encore Avenue in March.

It is a nice idea, but often times the open matting can reveal boom mics and other bloopers =)

Older open matte films are chock full of things that were never meant to be seen. Some of the knocks against the infamous Plan 9 From Outer Space, (mike booms in shot, the cheap wooden airplane controls) are actually invisible matted or projected at 1:85.

IIRC, the later Muppet films were hard matted to avoid seeing arm sleeves below a character's waist, and the tops of performer's heads on tv and video.

The "endless bicycle chain" scene in Pee Wee's Big Adventure was used to explain matted widescreen in some 90's Laserdisc store flyers.

My favorite open matte "blooper" is the scene in Bachelor Party where a character wrapped up in bedsheets falls out a window. Two very visible stagehands are at the bottom of the screen to catch the actor.

Where were you in '77?

How weird is that, I was just about to burn the 14gb unmolested Canal Plus transfer with commentaries and making ofs to a BD-R, when i thought I would check the site out!

Is this hard to find now?

For those of you with young kids, I made kid friendly audio tracks for Back to the Future 2 and Back to the Future 3. I also made a few changes to my original edit of the Back to the Future audio, removing the 'Bastards' and SOBs.

All 2.0 stereo AC3 448 kb/s.

Which versions do these sync up to?  BD, HDTV, DVD etc;, ?

Yes, It's almost impossible to find now, unfortunately....

Almost everybody on this topic is looking for this version.

They sync with the Blu-ray. One caution, the kids and I just watched Part 3 and I missed the deputy telling his guys to get Mad Dog "out of that shit". I'll let you know when it's fixed.

Edit:

It's fixed. Same URL.

I had no idea, is it still the best source then?
If someone who can upload 14gb wants to send me a BD-R I can put the MKV on it our just copy my BD-25 with extras and commentaries.
