Info: BREAKING!!! 'Jurassic World' shown open-matte on cable!

In India, Sony Pix channel premiered Jurassic World today and it is open-matte 16:9. This is great news, for me at least. The film was shot mostly on Super 35, so a 1.78:1 ratio was inevitable for Television. The framing looks really good and IMAX-like. I’m sure many other broadcasts of the film will be open-matte as well. Especially in PAL countries.

All of the previous 3 films were shown in 1.78:1 on cable, so this forms part of the herd. Also, I kind of felt the 2.00:1 ratio was odd. The broadcast ratio is closer to 1.85:1 which is the ratio of all the earlier films.

Maybe someone can preserve this version when it airs on their TV channels. Especially if there is no subtitle ruining the image.

They do that a lot these days with letterbox films, usually cropped though, on TV and Netflix/streaming/etc. And we thought the days of pan’n’scan were long gone =|

Jurassic World was shown open matte, not cropped. And I prefer it to pan & scan. Plus it looks better to me, especially in the dinosaur sequences, where the open matte shows the full creature and its movements.

Right, I’m just saying that usually they crop.

Have a look at these preview trailers on youtube and compare the framing with the Blu-Ray/DVD -

Some scenes, which were shot using 70mm (2.20:1 native) are slightly cropped at the sides. 90% of the film was done on super 35. And no, not all VFX plates were done on 70mm. Many plates are Super 35. They are all open-matte.

The uploader has not made this video available in your country.
Sorry about that.

I understood what you were referring to. Anything with an aspect ratio of 2:00.1 and wider is often at risk of being cropped to fill 16:9, just as they cropped films to fill 4:3 and some channels still do that. Last year I saw 300: Rise of an Empire, on HBO and was dismayed to see they’d cropped it rather than use the OAR.

In this case, no such risk, as the film retains the original width, with the vertical space opened up. And the dinosaur scenes and wide open vistas really benefit from the opened up frame, in my opinion. It also helps that 1.78:1 is very close to 1.85:1 of JP trilogy.

HBO Now has the film in 16:9, but I’m not sure if it’s open matte or cropped.

It has to be the same open matte master. Otherwise there would be too much crop. There are some scenes where dinosaurs and humans are at the extreme opposite ends of the frame. They would both be cropped out if the master was a pan & scan. However, having seen the film on Sony Pix in India, I can confirm that the film is open matte.

Once again, here are some screenshots (Blu-ray vs DTV broadcast)-

So, would the HBO Now version be of better quality? It certainly looks like it would be.

Maybe, it’s not showing at HBO here. If you can take some screen-grabs and compare with the Blu-Ray, it’ll be clear whether it’s open matte or not. But remember, some scenes were shot on 70mm (2.20:1 native area). Those scenes won’t be open matte. But the version I saw, the majority of scenes were open matte; almost the entire film.

Sky Hits HD (UK) showing Jurassic World - https://twitter.com/JurassicOutpost

This will most likely be the same open matte version. Sky HD has previously aired all the earlier Jurassic Park films in open matte 1.78:1. Those in the UK can have a look and compare, maybe take a few screenshots.

I tried to match this as closely as possible to one you linked earlier, but it definitely isn’t the exact same frame.

Here’s the HBO Now version: http://imgur.com/a/LrbC4
Ignore the black bar at the top, I was using the snipping tool on my 3:2 aspect ratio display.

Here’s the link to compare it to: http://imgur.com/a/qnYtA

I also was not streaming at the highest quality, so the quality with mine is pretty bad.

Without logo, great! Did you get to record this whole ‘HBO NOW’ broadcast?
This seems like the only clean logo/subtitle-less open matte version out there. HBO Now is not available in India, otherwise I’d have subscribed to their services.

I haven’t recorded it! It’s available for me to stream any time, though. I’m not sure what kind of copy protection they have on these sorts of things, but if I can figure it out, I’ll give it a whirl. It’ll be some time next week before I can try, though.

CANAL+ in Poland has been showing this Open Matte-version in the last months in HD. Unfortunately the channel has a quite noticable logo and in addition to that they’re also showing the rating during the whole programme in another corner.

They’re also airing Open Matte-versions of other movies e.g. “Ted 2” or “Furious 7”.

Sorry guys. I haven’t found a good way to record HBO Now stuff. Any recommendations? Ideally, I’d be able to download the source feed without screen capping, but screen capping seems to be the most likely route.

Screen capping? As in taking pictures? Is there no way to capture the video stream? I’m sure a lot of softwares are available for capturing streaming videos.
