Glad to see you're still considering doing work on these DJ. I know I haven't always been the most polite to you but I can tell you I really appreciate your work and God knows how you put so much time and effort into all this.

Wow, that's great. The grain is apparent on the text in the begin, but the rest of it looked pretty good in motion.

Wow, this sample looks very nice, and actually holds up to the broadcast version quite well and doesn't have that awful smearing. The IVTC (this does have it right?) and quality looks very nice without losing any of the color saturation. I compared it against my own cap of the LDs on which I didn't do any color work and left things as-is. It stays true to the source.

D_J, out of curiosity what was your workflow in doing this cap? It looks very nice and destroys the 16:9 one I did in FCP and Compressor.

I did a quick screencap of all the 97s I have on my HD and one of Ady's color corrected for comparison:

DJ's LD cap:

DJ's 97

My LD cap IVTCd and scaled to 16:9:

My 97 cap

A avi I found of a PAL 97 LD cap:

The Reivax 97 ANH from the digital broadcast tape:

and Ady's color corrected 2004 AVCHD for reference:

That's video noise. It's present in mine as well. On D_J's the "A Long Time Ago" title card has some scrolling noise as well. Mine has a lot of haze.

All I do is cap, crop, filter, resize, then add borders, and no offense to Ady, but I do not remember the 97 SE ANH looking like that at all, where it might look "natural" to some, that does not look right to me, these LD's look pretty damn close to how I remember the 97's looking(except for the pink part in ANH LOL) so if anyone wants color correcting done like that, you are going to have to do it yourself.

I do not want to get anyone's hopes up just yet, all I am doing is messing with this stuff a bit, trying to see if I were to do a 720P version, how should I approach this, can the LD footage even be used, and as I said, it SURE would be nice to have a partner or two on this one, because this shit gets tedious and very boring!

1 thing I would have to re sync all the 5.1 files again, and re do all subtitles, OH my.

I think I recall adywan admitting that he went too far with the color correction.

IMO the 04s no matter how much work is done to them never look right if you're trying to match to the 97s exactly.

I think that was about ESB though. And with ANH, Ady never claimed it to be 97SE reconstruction and these colours (in terms of palette, not vibrancy) are pretty close to the GOUT.

So DJ, do you mean using LD footage only, or do you mean using the DTV captures and using the LD footage where the smearing is really bad? Because I think in most places the DTV captures are superior, especially ANH (the DTV captures of ESB and ROTJ 97SE are pretty crap).

I threw in Ady's as a quick comparison. In the shot I chose there's a blue shift in the SE and Ady colored it to look more like the GOUT which is grey.

Too bad that there isn't a better broadcast ESB and ROTJ. If you really scrutinize it the smearing on the Reivax isn't too horrible in motion. Still frustrating though.

Hmm... that's interesting. The sharpness found on the broadcast is rather nice. It's most apparent on the folds and wrinkles in Leia's gown. Also there seems to be more visual detail on the sides (see the right side in this shot). DJ's looks cropped, is that a LD thing?

I'd still be quite happy watching something like what DJ has presented though

The broadcast versions will always be sharper/more detailed as they were broadcast and captured in native PAL 16:9 (1024x576) where as DJs LD captures are coming from a letter-boxed NTSC 4:3 (640x480) source, which roughly speaking gives the broadcast versions ~37.5% more resolution. That said I was pleasantly surprised by the picture quality of DJs capture! There was some block like noise I could see but this may just be from the H.264 compression...?

As someone who has done a LD preservation of the 97SE myself I am curious to know what AviSynth filters you are using? :)

If this does happen, what special features should I add to this? since there will be only 3 audio options available for each film, I should have room for some extras to fill a BD25, my menu guy and I are already tossing around ideas.

Thanks

Documentaries from Making Magic + trailers.

And in the time of greatest despair, there shall come a savior, and he shall be known as the Son of the Suns.

Those little featurettes that were on the VHS release before the film would be a good special feature. I grew up on the SE VHS and it's just a weird-feeling watching these movies without hearing some narrator go on about how I'm about watch George Lucas' definitive vision.

Author

The SE VHS docs are just excerpts of the single doc on the LD. Oddly the narrators seem different between the two.

Definitely the trailers. They're some of the best ever done imo.

The only other extra I could think of is maybe throw in the PCM LD track.

I've got a doc named "Special Edition Hype"... I'm sure I got it through this forum (years ago).

Author
Time

That will be one of the audio options, it will have Dolby Digital 5.1, Dolby Digital 2.0 Surround and LPCM 2.0

Author
Time

Well, if you're trying to fill up a BD-25, those are pretty good audio options, pretty complete. I seem to vaguely remember someone on this forum claiming either that they or someone they knew had a DTS audio sound disc (or something like that) that was used during the 1997SE Theatrical Reissue and were trying to transfer it to DVD. It was before I became a member and was just browsing; even then, I think it was an ancient thread. Did anything ever come out of this? If so, it could be a good audio track.
As for special features, maybe you would consider putting both the laserdisc and VHS Special Edition documentaries. Each movie could have its VHS documentary and the laserdisc one can possibly be on either the ANH disc or the ROTJ one. The VHS would be a good inclusion since many people had the VHS, so are used to that documentary; additionally, the VHS version is split into the three movies, so all three discs can have a little SE feature. Of course, you may also want to preserve the LD version since it's better quality and different. Another special feature would be the trailers, as previously suggested.

I asked the same question once because someone linked to an ebay auction selling the DTS discs for all three 97SEs but apparently it's impossible to get the soundtrack off of the CDs. The theatrical DTS sound would I think be an equivalent of DTS MA HD sound, so it would be pretty sweet but unfortunately it seems impossible :-(

Are you guys talking about that 5 star set? if so I have those too.

*edit, Yea you guys must be talking about the 5 Star Collection DVD9 SE Set, these claim to have English Dolby Digital 5.1, English DTS 5.1 Digital Surround, and English Dolby 2.0 Surround, and I am reading that off the DVD case, I will look in to them.

Author
Time

No, it wasn't the 5 star set, it was an auction for the original DTS theatre discs for the SE's of all three films.
