I've got a crazy idea my friends and I are considering

When DJ finally uploads the 97 SE v2, there will be an excellent transfer of both the theatrical and 97 releases.

Despite the added scenes and annoying CG, the 1997 versions were great restorations of the original films. (nothing like the funky color correction in the 2004 versions)

What if we took DJ's enhanced V3 theatrical versions and simply edited in the parts from the 97 SE that weren't offensive. (which is alot actually) It would be around 80% 97 SE and the rest would be the theatrical elements. Theatrical audio throughout of course.

I haven't seen a video clip from the 97 SE Trilogy V2 to compare, but I would assume the quality of the picture is better than the GOUT.  It came from a "restored" source made in the late nineties.  (has DJ ever uploaded a sample? I'm going to dig through the forums right now)

I understand this is a bit nuts, but it would be a way of making a theatrical cut using the BEST visual resources available. Other than someone privately funding a 35mm cleanup or waiting until hell freezes over when Lucasfilm releases the theatrical cuts, this is the best way to make a "restored/cleaned-up" version of the films.

I might even consider taking on the task if I think I can find the time.

I'm working on this exact thing in between school and my two Doctor Who TV Movie projects.

Problem is, while the picture is better than the GOUT overall, DVNR smearing is worse in some instances.

BUT, it does look better overall, and it's much less of a jarring transition than 04 to GOUT.

But weren't the home releases of the '97 VERY poorly color-timed? Didn't it have a poor telecine that resulted in a particularly blue Hoth and a pink Tatooine? I thought it was only in theaters where it was fantastic.

If I'm wrong that sounds like a fantastic idea.

i didn't see any comments about this idea when I skimmed the forums before. I now see that you guys were just talking about it recently.

I must have looked at every page but missed page 10. Sorry for the long post that basically stated what you guys were already doing.  I'm writing this stuff on my phone.

I can't wait to see what the quality jump will look like.

I'll take a more detailed look at the previous posts when I get home today.

ChainsawAsh, what are your sources? The recent V3 theatrical dvds and the unreleased 97 SE V2?

The picture quality for the blu-ray V3 theatrical cut is incredible. I would assume a blu-ray release for the 97 SE V2 set would also be an incredible resource as well.

My sources are the V3 and 97 SE V2 test discs that DJ sent out to some of us a few months ago.  As far as I know, the video will be identical on the publicly-released 97 SE V2, whenever DJ decides to release it.

Also, to answer the color timing question - I'll be color correcting both sources, shot by shot, in FCS Color.  Haven't gotten that far yet, though, so I don't know how I'll be timing it (that is, I don't know what I'll base my color correction on).

According to Harmy's EpVI reconstruction, the G'KAR looks terrible.

I don't wan't to be a killjoy, I like the idea but keep in mind that the broadcasts of ANH are quite significantly cropped on all four sides compared to other transfers, and as already mentioned, the DVNR - smear is even worse than on the GOUT, color and contrast issues and dark_jedi's versions all seem to have some weird motion jerkiness to them were the whole picture shake constantly, something that's not present on the sources he used, which is unfortunate as he did a hell of a nice job with the audio syncing on these discs. No idea what could've caused it.

Sorry for not mentioning this earlier d_j, but I wanted to make a more complete viewing of these before leaving any comments on it, and have since forgotten all about this. I think I just found it hard to get motivated watching those versions properly... SW-overload, I guess.

We want you to be aware that we have no plans—now or in the future—to restore the earlier versions.

Sincerely, Lynne Hale publicity@lucasfilm.com

Can you please provide samples? I really need to see this myself, after reading this, I just skimmed through Star Wars and Empire(have not looked at Jedi yet) and have seen none of this at all, the only scene in which I remember this crystal clear is the Canyon scene with R2, and it was on ALL of the DV broadcast versions, so there was not a thing I could do about it, and it sucked, but fortunately that scene is not to long LOL, but I can assure you, if this was as bad as you portray it, having "weird motion jerkiness" during the whole movie, for ALL 3, believe me, you guys would not have ever seen these, so if you can please post some samples of this, and I hope the others that got these will chyme in as well, because I am not seeing it at all, but on the 1 scene I already mentioned.

I didn't notice it.  Not at home, though, so I can't check at the moment.

I did take a look again and I can see this weird shaking going on throughout the film, but it's most noticable in the scenes where the camera is entirely static, never seen anything like it before, it's a really weird effect, it's there right from the start of the film, just take a look at the animated clouds on the opening Fox logo and you'll see what I mean, or the wall behind Greedo for another example.

We want you to be aware that we have no plans—now or in the future—to restore the earlier versions.

I don't know exactly how much DJ changed for the final files, but I checked the test samples of the V2 and that isn't there.

Besides the pink tint in Mos Eisley, is there more bad color timing on the SE video transfers? I thought ESB and ROTJ were fine in that regard.

I did see it very slightly on the clouds in the Fox Intro, and did not see anything on the wall behind Han when talking to Greedo, but I went through SW again and still do not see this at all, like I said, hopefully the other guys will chime in as well, I was going to look at the originals but no need to look at them if I do not see it on mine.

*edit - I just went through Jedi and did not see any of what you mention there either, so to me at least, this is the best 97 SE preservation, you must have bionic eyes, because I see none of it at all on all 3.

OK, it is obvious what changed from the OT to the 97 SE's, but what are the differences between the 97 SE's and the 04 SE's? is there something that has the differences exactly somewhere? I am tossing around an idea that I may, and I emphasize may, work up after the OT BD25's, it would be another companion set to the official Blu-ray Saga Set this Fall, but it would be a lot easier and helpful to know exactly where to look for the changes.

Thanks

Thanks for that link, if no one had any ideas I was just going to use my 97 SE LD caps for comparison, but it would be nicer to see pics online.

The best source for this are 005's HD comparisons, which show differences between all 3 versions. It is stated under every comparison whether it is a 97 or 2004 change, so if it says it's a 2004, it means that the shot was the same as the original in 97SE and if it was different in all 3 versions, 005 offers a comparison of all 3.

I didn't know he had the 97 SE's included, Thanks.

OK, now that I have gotten the info I need, let this thread get buried now.

Before we let it go down though, I too would like to see those comparisons.
Can you perhaps PM them to me, dark_jedi, or Harmy? :-)

Is there a version at all of the 1997 special edition preservation that has the 5.1 laserdisc tracks ?

All the broadcast versions which are pal, or DJ old set seem to be 2.0 only.

Personally i wish there was a version with full bitrate stereo PCM, but oh well.

What about this post?

if this DVD checks out, these are the specs:

4.38 GB's (damn did I get lucky on this LOL)
16:9 anamorphic video @ 2.35:1 encoded at 4200 avg bitrate
Dolby Digital 5.1 @ 384kbps(untouched Laserdisc rip,Thanks to Darth Editous)
Dolby Digital 2.0 Surround @ 224kbps (untouched Laserdisc rip captured with video)
NO Menu's,Movie only, chapters, audio selectable by your DVD player remote.

and now for the HUGE Thanks to Darth Editous for the 5.1 audio file! IT SOUNDS GREAT!!!!!!!

The audio took A LOT of work but it payed off in the end, took me quit a few hours to get ESB all sync'd up and edited back together, because I got the files in LD sides, not 1 file for the whole film,so now that I have done this once already, hopefully ANH and ROTJ will not take as long.

Great now if only it was uploaded to the spleen.  Like the v3.
